TOAST

Now I never thought I'd say this, not until my mid 40's at least, but I feel like celebrating the wonders of TOAST! I'm not sure I'm game for the wintry stuff but their summer dresses are just perfect. For years I've longed for the undone, easy linen look but usually end up looking like a sack of potatoes... not this summer my friends!

My dad earlier said I looked "outrageously well sorted" in my new orange linen number - I think he meant well put together, and I've just got the navy on sale on JL. Yipppeeeee!

Cherries those are great on you (even the wafty one!). Particularly like the first one, that's a gorgeous dress.

Yorkshirelass04 · 09/06/2020 17:12

@ilovecherries

I got the blue checked dress and I think It's amazing! I pulled it in with the belt and wear with black leggings and trainers. And jangly earrings. It needs dressing up - but not saying you need to keep it if you don't like it!

Alsohuman · 09/06/2020 17:15

I like all the dresses. I’m with your daughter on the blouse.

I will have a proper go at styling it before I make a final decision then. I was a bit...startled... by it when I unwrapped it, but it’s a totally gorgeous colour. It just feels it may be a tad out there for rural Scotland! I can just imagine the side eyes.

Yorkshirelass04 · 09/06/2020 17:19

@ilovecherries

For me it was one of those items that grow on you. You at first think it's ugly and then you fall in love!

It helps me to imagine I'm a part time sculptor part time cellist when I wear it.

GazeboParty · 09/06/2020 17:20

@ilovecherries I like the checked dress the best, or the other patterned one - not keen on the shirt.

AmethystMoonShine · 09/06/2020 17:22

Oooh that’s all rather lovely @ilovecherries. I like it all! Let us know what you decide? I think the bright checked one would look fabulous with DMs Smile

Hmm, you think? I thought it was a nice simple summer top. Obviously wouldn’t wear it with the joggers I’ve been gardening in though.
Alsohuman · 09/06/2020 17:33

Yes, sorry. It doesn’t seem to have the Toast vibe for me. It could be from anywhere. I wouldn’t go as far as hideous but it’s pretty ordinary.

Ach, no need to be sorry, wouldn’t have posted if I hadn’t wanted opinions. And something HAS to go back, if I’m seduced into keeping the bright blue dress, then the blouse might be it. JL’s toast sale has been so good though. The linen dress, for example, was half price, but it’s still full price on the Toast site.
Whatthefoxgoingon · 09/06/2020 17:37

Bizarrely despite being 4 inches shorter than you, I look very similar to you in a Toast dress, @ilovecherries

Whatthefoxgoingon · 09/06/2020 17:38

Btw I like all the dresses on you, even the very loose checked one.

houseforanartlover · 09/06/2020 17:43

@ilovecherries I got that poplin dress too - also in a 12. It felt really big and not right for me personally, I felt like it was wearing me rather than me wearing it, if you know what I mean. Also it has no zip so you have to take off over your head which I hate. But I love the fabric soooo much! I also got the skirt in the same fabric and am still debating whether to keep - if I do I think I'll take it up a few inches, I'm 5'6' and it's very long on me.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 09/06/2020 17:46

The poplin dress would be way too long on me, probably reaching the floor.

Countmeout · 09/06/2020 17:49

Thanks for showing us your purchases @ilovecherries
I like the wafting checked dress. It looks handy to pull on in a warm day.
I think the neck on the first dress would annoy me. How would you alter it?
I like the navy linen Dress-
I also like the pin tuck blouse. I liked it so much I bought it in the John Lewis first drop of Toast on sale and have already worn it a lot. Mostly with an ancient pair of acid green Wide legged linen trousers that I’ve kept so long they’re sort of fashionable again. It’s so light and cool while still having sleeves.
Have your Kin trouser/culottes come yet?

@Railingsohno can’t wait to see your Kantha jackets, you’ll have to show us a picture of them.
I sometimes use mine as a bed jacket if I’m reading in bed and it’s cold. And I wear it out too.

Almahart · 09/06/2020 18:49

I like the checked one! Agree blouse is nice but nothing special

simplificate · 09/06/2020 19:01

Thanks for answeiring Zinnia I'm going to take the plunge and let down one of the 'secret sale' dresses I got! After all, £40 down fron £140 means it was free anyway, right? There's only 2" of hem but I think even that will make enough of a difference

simplificate · 09/06/2020 19:12

cherries i love the linen dress and pintuck shirt on you. Others are nice but not so special looking

Zinnia · 09/06/2020 19:13

Do it! I'm a rubbish seamstress but even I manage to do hems now - 2" will make quite a difference. £40 from £140 is very nearly them paying you to wear it Grin

HieronymusBoschLAPD · 09/06/2020 19:30

Cherries, I'm rural Scotland, too! I think part of why Toast appeals so much (to me at least) is because it definitely has a practical, bad-weather-safe aesthetic.

goldpendant · 09/06/2020 20:05

@ilovecherries that blue linen one was me, I got the orange too! Looks gorgeous on you! I actually like the checks in you personally!

goldpendant · 09/06/2020 20:07

My Kato floral is going back but the Ria check (in an 8!) is staying, I'd have possibly preferred a 10 but the 8 is just right, as long as the boobs don't grow!

artlover, (are you in Scotland as well with that name?), I was surprised about the zip too - I pulled it on but expected it to have an underarm zip for taking it off - most of my other Toast dresses have that. I need the 12 on the bodice for sure - a bit like the one I posted earlier in the thread, it’s got plenty room in the skirt, but it’s quite fitted on the top half.

Count, the easiest thing with the neck might be to put a v in - that’s all I could do myself. Ideally though I would just have the boat softened, so it’s got a round neck - but would have to get someone to do that for me.

bosch, one of the things I like about toast is I always feel I could pull a pair of wellies on with it, and not look (too) ridiculous. Although the part-time cellist/sculptor/mad creative person vibe also appeals.

ilovecherries · 09/06/2020 20:17

Oh, I’m glad you liked the Ria, Gold. Gorgeous dress, it just wasn’t made for me - def pulled across the bust on me.

houseforanartlover · 09/06/2020 22:27

@ilovecherries Yes, I'm rural Scotland too - seems to be a few of us who like a bit of TOAST! Actually, the two pieces I bought that I'm definitely keeping are the Grace skirt with the massive tartan pattern and the Fair Isle jumper, both in quite autumnal colours, so maybe there's a link with location and my style Smile.
