On every thread where someone posts a picture of sandals to ask for advice, theres always a chorus of 'hideous', 'granny', 'fugly' etc. So please share some photos of sandals that you think are nice, stylish, chic, non-stomach-churning, whatever. Bear in mind that many of us need sandals to be comfortable and suitable for lots of walking. I promise no snarky comments!

Can I ask Birkenstock's wearers if they're ok to walk/run after a small child in? I've always been put off by the lack of a back strap so worry about them staying on my feet, or having to do that scrunched up toe thing to keep them on while I run after a toddler.

HastaLaVistaPrint · 16/04/2019 07:14

I’ve just taken delivery of these Birkenstock Rios. Comfiest things I’ve ever had on my feet but haven’t yet decided whether to keep them in case they’re the wrong side of fugly.

Uggs, Toms or Fitflop! All worth a look.

JackieLavertyintheFreezer · 16/04/2019 07:30

I embraced the fugly sandal, I need a comfortable walking pair for holiday and got these, they are fantastic, walked miles the first time I put them on. I also have Birkenstock’s, Moshulu, Clark’s, Steve Maddens and am eyeing up some Yokonos!

My new sandals from Topshop
Love them - and so cheap!
I have a pair of trusty Birkenstock's that's come out every summer as well - never really found anything quite so comfy.

@HastaLaVistaPrint I love those Birkenstock's!

Ellapaella · 16/04/2019 08:00

Also love yours @tierraJ

HastaLaVistaPrint · 16/04/2019 08:05

I agree Josepheen. I have chunky feet and anything delicate makes my feet look like pig trotters bound in string.

Thanks Ellapaella, I've been on MN for ages under a bazillion name changes and I don't think I've ever been declared to have good taste on the S&B boards. Grin

gubbsywubbsy · 16/04/2019 08:13

My personal opinion if if you are a bit chunky then chunky sandals make you look older / frumpy and if you are slim and leggy / young then any chunky sandal makes you look hip/ cool..
this is based on my self as I'm short and size 12 .. I tend to wear slim sandals that have 'hidden ' padding so they are comfy ...
These are good for this year .

gubbsywubbsy · 16/04/2019 08:15

They have a squishy sole but don't look like they have .. they go with pretty much everything . I usually buy a similar style every year .

Frangipane · 16/04/2019 08:19

@WutheringTights if you get the Arizona design of Birkenstocks with 2 straps, they stay on fine without the need to scrunch your toe despite the lack of a heel strap. I honestly have walked everywhere in mine, from sightseeing in a city all day to country walks.

Or you can get the Rio design as shown in Hasta's post which does have a heel strap.

StormBringers · 16/04/2019 08:19

I live my saltwater sandals, they wear pretty well too-‘I’ve done miles in mine

Elllllle · 16/04/2019 08:32

I hate saltwater sandals. They are little girl shoes.
Love Ella's and Tierra's however, and I may be biased, but there are two fashion items that Oz does well, and that's sandals and bikinis.

This summer I bought these which are so comfortable.

Teagoanngoanngoann · 16/04/2019 08:34

If you have dainty pretty feet you can probably more or less model most fugly sandals successfully. If, like me, you have giant troll feet, hairy toes, corns, bunions and have your local chiropodist on speed dial, then no amount of blingy straps or toe polish is going to warrant exposing your hoofs to the world. I struggle to walk comfortably in a pair of sketchers without my chiropractic insoles. So asking me to walk on a flat piece of wood, held on by a piece of plastic between my toes sounds worse than dental extraction.....bring on the fugly granny sandals. TROLL FEET GRANNY SANDAL WEARING WOMEN OF THE WORLD UNITE!!!! GrinGrinGrin (not jealous of dainty bald footed girls at all lol)

cushellekoala · 16/04/2019 08:42

I had a pair of really comfortable flip flop style sandals from next when i was pregnant. I thought they were ok then i saw a few people older than my mum wearing them and couldn't see them the same way again. Then i got some from tk maxx that i wore to a wedding last year but when i saw the pics i look frumperama in them! My fave pair were really prettyand i bought on holiday in morocco. I've never found any here that i like as much.

Peridot1 · 16/04/2019 08:47

I completely agree that there is no subject as polarising on MN as sandals!

For those of you who want something comfortable and supportive for lots of walking have a look on a website called SimplyFeet. They do a brand called Vionic which I find great - I get Plantar Faciatis (sp?) and need a supportive arch rather than a flat foot bed. Some are fugly but some are nice.

Also Fitflops have a good range - and currently have a big sale on. Again comfortable and supportive so great for walking lots.

Ellapaella - love those Topshop ones.

MaudesMum · 16/04/2019 08:55

For those of us who sometimes need to look respectable at work when its hot, I bought these wedges from Fly of London last year: www.flylondonshop.co.uk/womens/all-shoes/yidi190fly - they are super comfy!

poundoflard · 16/04/2019 09:06

@frangipane

I'm with you there, they are great sandals.
Comfort over fashion anyday!

@jackielaverty
Yours too look great.

I am known for my frumpy footwear tho Grin

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 16/04/2019 09:11

Ooooh just gone and bought some sanuks. Thank you!

WhenZogateSuperworm · 16/04/2019 09:14

I live in my saltwaters all summer. Super comfy and they are tan so go with anything.

visitorthedog · 16/04/2019 09:18

@motherforkinshirtballs arghh sorry, yes, I meant Blowfish - I tried on the Granola B style and the vegan ‘leather’ is fine. I’m actually tempted to buy them but there’s too much colour choice!

Doza · 16/04/2019 09:24

@frangipane I love those sandals!
Mind you my favourite pair are from Ecco: I can't link as I bought them when expecting DO who's now 10!
They're still going strong though Smile

animaginativeusername · 16/04/2019 09:25

I have had these for 9 years, bought from Redoute they are taken out every summer. For my feet any footwear lasting more than a year is a record. I now have a 'collection' of quality boots, sandals, flats and brogues, means the footwear lasts longer. I wear different footwear everyday day because of very sweaty/feet.
