Kimonos?

I’ve been seeing these in a few shops and have started to wonder if i could wear one without looking ridiculous, or like I’m wearing my PJs and dressing gown. I fancy a black sheer one wth a big flower print but it would have to be quite long, as I’m a pear and anything wafty that stops on my hips makes me look enormous.

Anyone embracing the kimono this spring/summer? Or are they just stupid?

Not the best picture of me, I look bloody miserable Grin but this is my favourite kimono - £30 from the William Morris collection at H&M.

Primark do nice ones sometimes too! I have a couple of lovely long ones that were about £8 each.

I've only gone and ordered the aqua-coloured short kimono with the cranes... the boho style might have given better bum coverage but it was rather dressing-gowny, and I think you need a more louche, coltish sort of style to pull that off. It's my birthday in a few weeks and this will be a lovely going out top with indigo jeans and my metallic green shoes.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 09/04/2019 20:24

I just succumbed to the One Hundred Stars grey magnolia short kimono with matching headband. This short middle aged woman hopes to look bohemian and fragrantly wafty, and not like I’ve lost a fight with some curtains. Stay tuned... I have a lovely blue flower print one at home from Gudrun Sjöden but haven’t yet ventured forth in it.

I too am liking the image of the people at One Hundred Stars suddenly wondering about an unexplained spike in sales!!

Here's hoping the kimono is nice when it arrives - tomorrow, according to the message on my mobile earlier! I've got unreasonably excited about it now so I can't deal with being disappointed Grin

I agree in general that shorter ones are more flattering. I'm tall and slim but I think I'd feel too wafty in the longer ones, even the knee-length (though I think they are stunning to look at). Maybe you can get away with it not looking like you've accidentally wandered out in your nightie if you're 18 and youthfully gorgeous. At 40 plus, I think I might alarm my friends if I did anything quite so wafty...

Yes and a sudden spike in people wearing them! I often fantasise about having a kimono, but i would only wear one indoors now, so doesn't seem much point. I used to have a dressing gown a bit kimono ish. I loved it, but sadly one day got ruined in the washing machine.

evilharpy · 11/04/2019 21:45

My Topshop via Ebay kimono has arrived and it’s gorgeous.

Just wondering... Why are people who wear kimonos not accused of cultural appropriation in the same way that people who wear Native American headdresses are? Hmm

Totally missing point of thread I know. Sorry. As you were.

Quintella · 11/04/2019 22:29

Are you annoyed at people wearing kimonos or annoyed at not being allowed wear a Native American headdress? It's hard to tell.

Palominoo · 11/04/2019 22:34

Kimono have T-shaped, Dambi-straight-lined robes worn so that the hem falls to the ankle, with attached collars and long, wide sleeves. Kimono are wrapped around the body, always with the left side over the right (except when dressing the dead for burial)[4] and are secured by a sash called an obi, which is tied at the back. The fashion kimono’s are not the same as a traditional Japanese kimono.’

Fashion kimono’s are just a nod to the style in my opinion.

Palominoo · 11/04/2019 22:37

I got a one hundred stars one. China plates. Excuse the crap photo taken in the car outside the sorting office where I picked it up from.

I’ve not had time to try it on but it looks lovely through the packaging.

Oh FFS.

I need a bloody kimono now.

SophoclesTheFox · 12/04/2019 07:06

Argh, now I need one too! What’s the sleeve length like on the one hundred stars ones? They’re just so pretty! 😍

evilharpy · 12/04/2019 09:33

Here’s my Topshop one but it’s nicer in real life.

Last 3 kimonos I bought were from a vintage shop in Tokyo, 2 shorter ones, a Houmongi Kimono and a Komon one. Both silk gorgeous designs shorter length. For vintage kimonos they are all in excellent condition, you have to search the shops out and can get some interesting tops and obi belts at next to nothing.

And a long formal black/gold silk embroidered which is now on my wall.

Cost each, just under £7!!!

I wear them mostly in the spring/autumn as they are thicker than the summer cotton yukata wraps I have.

If anyone visits look at the markets as well, you can find loads for sale at excellent prices.

Those at One hundred stars look very nice

Todamhottoday · 12/04/2019 09:57

Oh thanks to the poster who mentioned One Hundred Stars, loving some of the tops and some of the sale scarfs are really nice.....

....to add to the other thousands I already have!

Azura2019 · 12/04/2019 12:13

What do you wear under the kimono?
Can I getaway with a t shirt under for work? Loving the choices here.

ohhiyouitsme · 12/04/2019 13:58

I wore mine with a fine plain t-shirt with a slight scoop neck, it looked great.

Scabetty · 12/04/2019 16:10

I have the One Hundred Stars New York map which I wear to work often and get loads of comments. Have had it almost 3 years and it still looks new. I really like the Navy stork one so may get another.

ItchySeveredFoot · 12/04/2019 16:43

Ffs so I need a kimono now! That 100 stars link is lethal! I want the Coral Kimono. It has fish. And there's some beautiful scarves in the sale.

EngagedAgain · 12/04/2019 16:54

Azura - good point. I had a kimono ish dressing gown once!

ohhiyouitsme · 12/04/2019 18:22

Scabetty, how do you wash yours?

Scabetty · 12/04/2019 18:46

Silk wash in machine with a silk/wool liquid detergent, hang to dry. Light iron. Good as new Smile

ohhiyouitsme · 12/04/2019 18:53

Fab, thanks!

banivani · 12/04/2019 19:35

I’m still kicking myself for not buying the William Morris at H&M last year - it sold out fast and now goes for silly money second hand :(

GraceMarks · 12/04/2019 19:44

banivani snap! I really liked that range but I dithered over whether it was a bit much for every day wear. I really wish I'd been more decisive now!
