Kimonos?

evilharpy · 07/04/2019 08:11

I’ve been seeing these in a few shops and have started to wonder if i could wear one without looking ridiculous, or like I’m wearing my PJs and dressing gown. I fancy a black sheer one wth a big flower print but it would have to be quite long, as I’m a pear and anything wafty that stops on my hips makes me look enormous.

Anyone embracing the kimono this spring/summer? Or are they just stupid?

They are lovely Bea. Can’t comment on packing quality as I buy them from a boutiquey shop near me, but the items themselves are fab. The fabric feels good - lightweight and nicely stitched but not at all transparent. I always get comments on the map one.

ohhiyouitsme · 08/04/2019 17:04

BeaLola, the packaging was nice as I remember it - pretty printed tissue paper sealed with a sticker, and a flat cardboard box 💛.

I wore mine with skinny jeans and a fine tee; I think I'd like to buy some kind of camisole to wear with it as well.

LocalBadGal · 08/04/2019 19:02

I just got this one, love it:

I picked up a beautiful red one in the Anthropologie sale for about twenty quid instead of £160(!) on off chance it'd be a good beach cover up and it's so lovely. So glad I got it - looks fabulous with jeans and vest top.

Alabaster

I've just bought the stork one in blue. I was going to go with the green but because the blue was out of stock it made me want it more. I then had to hunt it down on the internet.

I have to get off S&B now as in the past few days I've spent a fortune. I've bought an IPL machine, some WOW hair gloss and now this.

teta · 09/04/2019 10:15

I made the mistake of perusing the Anthropologie site and bought the last lace knit Kimono from the sale. Luckily it was heavily reduced, as I’ve been eyeing up various permutations of this over the years in Wrap/Poetry. The price always put me off.
I love Kimonos and have several silk jigsaw ones. I wore them a lot last summer with cropped wide linen pants and a linen vest top. As they were so cool and airy in the heat.

Oh God this thread has sunk me. I do not have a spare £50 ish for a kimono and yet I've just ordered the stunning cherry blossom one from One Hundred Stars.

Tbf I have been looking for a nice kimono for about 2 years and have never managed to find one I can afford. They're either el cheapo shiny things that I hate or something stunning in silk for £500.

The One HUndred Stars ones look SO GORGEOUS and if I love the cherry blossom one enough I will ask DH for the pagoda one for my birthday.

Thanks for the link to that, ohhiyouitsme, and thanks for starting the thread OP!

I have also bought a one hundred stars kimono after reading this thread. I wonder if they are scratching their heads wondering at the sudden increase in sales. I got this one

Love some of those onehundredstars kimonos but their website is in serious need of updating. Takes forever to load. If they're reading this thread as a result of following where all the new clicks were coming from please take this on board! Wink

IJustWantToWearDungarees · 09/04/2019 12:40

There is a shop on Facebook called Pretty Little Poppet (awful name) where they make custom kimonos out of some lovely fabrics. V good for taller people.

Walkersjalapeno · 09/04/2019 13:57

I love the one hundred stars range! I’m a size 14 (working on that though) and G cup norks.... will a Kimono look ridiculous? Do I go for a short or long one?

Calloway · 09/04/2019 14:07

I think the shorter length are more flattering on all sizes. More wearable.

shamelesshackney · 09/04/2019 14:15

Etsy has some great vintage kimonos.

MouseRatFan · 09/04/2019 14:19

I need a kimono now!

ohhiyouitsme · 09/04/2019 15:26

😄 at everyone being enabled to buy kimonos.

Mine is one of the shorter ones. I like the longer ones, but worry that they veer into dressing gown territory 🤔.

GraceMarks · 09/04/2019 16:06

Wow, I just looked at the 100 Stars ones and now I seriously want the one with parrots on. Do people think they would really, truly look ok on a short fat person with dark jeans and a vest top?

MaybeDoctor · 09/04/2019 16:18

Are 100 stars fairly ethical? I am always a bit worried when it comes to smaller retailers

Switsy · 09/04/2019 16:20

I think it would look great. Because they're so thin and silky they just kind of skim over your figure. They don't cling and they don't add bulk. Perfect.

doctorboo · 09/04/2019 16:32

This is my charity shop find from ages ago, less than £5 if I recall correctly. Sorry for the crap pics, I’m trying to get my kids to stay out of the way and It’s been smooshed in my shared wardrobe.

Kimonos?
Kimonos?
Palominoo · 09/04/2019 16:41

I’m 5’6” and prefer the longer length on me but not full length to the ankle as they do look dressing gown on me.

Mid thigh is a great length for me, the shorter ones are lovely but not as nice on me, personally.

BillyAndTheSillies · 09/04/2019 17:01

I live in Kimono's through summer. This summer I will be heavily pregnant so I can imagine my day to day uniform will be jersey maxi dresses and kimonos or black vest top, tencel denim culottes and kimono.

Usually find ebay great for hunting them down, but I'm now in a hundred stars rabbit hole!

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 09/04/2019 17:02

What are the lengths of the short ones? Long ones? I can't work out whether to get a top or a dress, and length ideas will help me decide.

I also want a one hundred stars one Blush

QueenofCBA · 09/04/2019 17:34

Bloody hell, I didn’t even know I wanted a kimono, but those short onehundredstars ones are gorgeous! And all their other stuff...

justchecking1 · 09/04/2019 17:37

Do the short one hundred stars ones cover your bum? I definitely need bum coverage but am also afraid of looking like I'm wearing my dressing gown (especially since many people around my area DO go out in their dressing gowns...)
