Link to book group thread, which has the list of books.

And in case you get bored of the royals or they're having a quiet week, here's the Celebrity S&G thread!

Remember, let's critique the clothes without getting too personal about the wearers.

I agree with the article that she is in abusive relationship with the press. That's exactly what it is.

However we (MN royal threaders) aren't the press and we can see that wearing a £2k dress to a charity for the disadvantaged is distasteful.

She's been given a rough ride in the media though, plus some of the comments on insta are horrendous and no one deserves that.

QueenOfTheAndals · 03/02/2019 18:07

True but the piece isn't about that, it's about the more pointless attacks on her, like because she holds her bump. I also find it hard to believe that the press care that much about her spending when they never say anyone about Camilla, who always wears couture or indeed HM who is never seen in the same outfit twice.

Personally I think they ALL spend too much on clothes! But if they didn't then we'd have nothing to talk about on these threads so..,

So what should she do? Wear a dress that the disadvantaged can afford?

CreakyBlinder · 03/02/2019 18:21

We also don't kick up a fuss when Kate wears expensive stuff - wonder how much that boring tartan Alexander McQ was?!

We've been conditioned as anyone else.

QueenOfTheAndals · 03/02/2019 18:29

Yea exactly, although you could argue that she's had that several years and worn it a few times. But the plaid skirt she wore to that services Christmas party cost over £1000 and I don't recall any press criticism for that.

But I have to say that William doesn't seem to have inherited his father's love of luxury clothes. For the aforementioned Christmas party he wore a fleece!

has reportedly hired a doula

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 03/02/2019 18:36

That’s Meghan

BigGreenOlives · 03/02/2019 18:38

Thank you for the new thread @QueenOfTheAndals Trying to decide whether to watch the Paxman programme.

mrscampbellblackreturns · 03/02/2019 18:38

I agree Queen - William is boden man Wink

BeverlyGoldberg · 03/02/2019 18:42

@SenecaFalls I think you know that's not what I'm saying. There are better options than a £2k dress.

MotherofPearl · 03/02/2019 19:00

Thanks for the new thread Queen. I'm keen to tackle that reading list that Seneca put together - all sound very tempting.

I came in here to post a link to the Suzanne Moore article but I see Queen beat me to it. I think it's a great piece. And it underscores the unusualness of these threads in trying really hard to keep things kind, civil and focused on the clothes.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 03/02/2019 19:17

HM at Sandringham today.
Looking very springlike.
Probably her last weekend there. She stays to commemorate the passing of her father on 6th February.

Interesting article here on HM’s wardrobe (was looking into her rewears...). Apparently she likes dresses because she doesn’t have any time to adjust things when getting out of cars, she’s always ‘on’

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 03/02/2019 19:29

Love that colour on HM.

How poignant that all these years on she still commemorates her father like that.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 03/02/2019 19:30

@desertgirl
I was doing the same thing.
She does rewear more than we realise

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 03/02/2019 19:33

I think his kingship informs her style of monarchy.
Even in recent years, she has referred to how her Papa would react to something.
She’s been Queen for a long time, but she also lost her father 65 years ago to “ achieve” that.

dairyfarmerswife · 03/02/2019 19:39

What does the Queen do with all her outfits ?
She doesn't appear to re-wear them.

I think she does. I follow the royal hats blog and there is a picture in the comments of this post royalhats.net/2019/01/27/ascot-hats-from-the-past-3/#comments of HM at Sandringham and a previous wear of the same hat and coat though the coat has since had the collar removed. Plenty of examples of rewears of hats royalhats.net/2019/01/13/sunday-church-outing-at-sandringham/#comments royalhats.net/tag/queen-elizabeth/page/1/ and she actually links back to previous wears frequently

dairyfarmerswife · 03/02/2019 19:40

Oops xpost Curly and desertgirl

QueenOfTheAndals · 03/02/2019 19:42

Yes and I think she'd happily trade in her status as longest-ruling monarch for a few more years with her father. He was no age at all when he died, until he got ill HM probably didn't expect to become queen until her forties.

For those of you interested in some minutiae, I found this Wikipedia entry on the descendants of George V. There are about 100; of which about 30:are Lascelles.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 03/02/2019 19:49

Just occurred to me that ex p and therefore DS have a variant of Lascelles as their surname. So my DS may be very distantly related to the RF!

QueenOfTheAndals · 03/02/2019 19:50

They're an interesting and slightly eccentric bunch, the Lascelles. Most of them have social media accounts you can stalk find. How the other halves live!

I think if I could be a royal it would be most fun being someone like Amelia Windsor or Davina Lewis. You're free to lead your own life but you also get the perks like Christmas lunch at Sandringham or the Buckingham Palace balcony for the Trooping of the Colour.

beanaseireann · 03/02/2019 19:52

Thank you to the posters that said/ showed she re wears outfits.
That's good.
Is there any possibility she donates some of them to someone in need or a charity shop?
