Never mind the (never ending summer) how does one look expensive in Autumn?

Followed the summer thread and really enjoyed it but now I want to get prepared for Autumn.

I love the idea of swanning about in a Burberry type mac but neither the style nor the colour suits me.

How can I look effortless throughout Autumn especially when it's days of wet weather?

Thank you 3stonedown . I’m bidding on one now :)
Have you lost 3 stone ? Apologies if you have already told us .

3stonedown · 16/08/2018 09:53

SpeckledyHen I'm actually due a name change as I am 3lb off losing 5stone Blush

Let me know how you get on if you win!

SpeckledyHen · 16/08/2018 16:40

OMG 3 that’s amazing !!. How do you feel now ? Pm me if you prefer , on not lol . (Sorry not meaning to pry )

I have lost 35 lbs this year and that has been pretty good for me hence having a shop-fest recently.

3stonedown · 16/08/2018 19:55

speckled that's ok I'm always open and happy to talk about it. All round I feel pretty amazing. I've gone from a 20 to a 12. I'd like to lose another 1.5stone to put me in the middle of my BMI range but I wouldn't be upset if I stayed this size now. Physically I am the fittest I have ever been, can run 10k and just generally very active. It's saved my mental health too, I started losing weight September last year so it's coming up to a year now and I was in quite a dark place before that with some mild depression and low confidence.

35lbs is really great, congratulations. It is great being able to buy clothes in smaller sizes and I've found I have got my style mojo back

MulberryPeony · 16/08/2018 21:29

The trouble with the looser topshop style in that colour is it could look like a shopkeepers coat a la open all hours!

I’ve just bought a second hand bag in midnight. It goes well with black but could do with some moare ideas for coat colours.

MissMarplesKnitting · 16/08/2018 21:32

Also have coat dilemma. Need waterproof for playground or field trip duties.

Am size 14 top (cheers boobs)

Trying to avoid seasalt type but it's looking more likely. Maybe a Barbour....

MulberryPeony · 16/08/2018 21:34

Half star I have the merino earlier this year in brown which looks slightly more camel and short sleeve version in the [macaroon] pink. They are very nice and I’m planning on getting a couple every year in different colours.

SpeckledyHen · 17/08/2018 18:37

Huge congratulations 3 on your amazing weight loss . I can’t decide if I’m more impressed with that or your ability to run 10k !!
Another 1.5 stone from size 12 - you will be tiny .

DuchessofManchester · 17/08/2018 19:04

Love threads like these! Although my bank account does not! Looking for a cashmere jumper maybe grey, brown ankle boots and maybe some dark coloured bootleg jeans as getting sick of my skinny's.... are bootleg jeans tragic though?

kirkandpetal · 18/08/2018 07:54

Mulberry re the uniqlo merino, how do you find the sizing?

MulberryPeony · 18/08/2018 08:31

I have one merino in a medium and one in a small and both fit about the same so I’m afraid I’m not a great deal of help! I’m usually a size 10 or small in tops.

AnotherOtter · 18/08/2018 11:24

I put my weight, body shape, bra size, etc, into Uniqlo's fit finder and ordered the sizes they recommended. I am a booby (32GG) apple 12-14 on top and 10-12 (depending on vanity sizing) on bottom and ordered larges. Reordered and one of the replacement mediums is still too large on the bust. So I'd say they are hit and miss but are larger than average sizes.

LuxuryWoman2018 · 18/08/2018 20:59

That might be the one Ellapaella if the colour is true to the picture. I'd prefer not polyester but the shape is what I'm after. Thanks!

Ellapaella · 18/08/2018 21:00

I was just browsing warehouse for coats (I'm on the lookout for a charcoal grey wool coat) and saw that and thought of you. Is lovely. Brown is also going to be a strong colour this autumn/winter apparently so a good choice!

Squarepeg29 · 19/08/2018 07:59

I’d spent a few winters looking for the perfect fitted woolen/tweed coat. Finally found it in Really Wild last year. Gorgeous colour, fitted style, a classic to last a lifetime.

Cambionome · 20/08/2018 08:37

Ooh - just clicked on the Warehouse coat link. Very nice - thanks Ellapaella!

0teaandtoast0 · 21/08/2018 21:44

Just ordered myself an Ilse Jacobsen waterproof coat - trying to be practical rather than giving into desires for cord and flannel at this point! If this doesn't fit I'll be going for a Seasalt Seafolly jacket. Will feed back for anyone interested in getting a waterproof coat this autumn.

SpeckledyHen · 22/08/2018 20:29

Agree that the warehouse coat looks great . So pleased if brown is going to be in the shops this year . So good for my colouring :)

EnidButton · 22/08/2018 21:50

There aren't many wool coats around yet. Hopeful more will start appearing next month.

OrdinarySnowflake · 05/09/2018 18:36

Bumping this! I'm ready to start thinking about my AW wardrobe and need some help!

Need "transitional trousers" - felt too cold for bare legs this morning, not ready to bust out the thick tights, don't want to always wear jeans. Thinking something like these peg leg ones - perhaps I should be looking more 'paperbag' style or wide leg?

Also need to replace my old flat brown leather boots. Has anyone found anything that looks classy, not costing a fortune that would suit and good for walking long distances most days?

OrdinarySnowflake · 05/09/2018 20:49

Hopeful bump for the evening crowd, or has this group died a death? Sad

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 09/09/2018 11:38

Hello you lovelies! (I was ThenCameTheFools)

Back now in Italy after 2 months of working in the UK- how is it going for you all?

I HAVE to go down on bended knee and pay homage to the poster who told us about the Me and Em Palazzo pants- I have worn them non-stop, for work I felt dressed up in them, for hanging around, I felt comfy in them, for holidays in Portugal I just wore them every day and every night. My boss (stylish lady) said "you look really good in those" (not happened for years!) So chuffed with them!

My other big summer hit was the linen mix Jaeger drawstring white top that I wore (usually with my palazzo pants obvs!) all summer long.

While in London and UK in general, I did start to look at people and go "looks expensive/doesn't look expensive" Grin Have learned so much from these threads, hope they keep going.

I also bought a navy slouchy bag (plain with a tan shoulder strap) thought it was mock leather, but sniffing it I'm not sure,..from a stall in Portugal for 20 euro.

The Modalu mini bucket bag I bought from their outlet was a miss though, not long enough for cross body, and too bulky (yet small) for a shoulder bag. Will prob ebay it.

ethelfleda · 09/09/2018 18:56

Can I please join?
I was on the summer thread briefly and I felt so classy all season thanks to the advice! I mainly wore pieces that can be layered for autumn as well so I just need to add a few more bits to my wardrobe. My colour is autumn so tan suits me and I’m after a nice pair of tan leather flats. Also need some good quality jumpers to layer over my shirts.

I am looking forward to wearing my Barbour olive green classic wax jacket though! I also have a lovely dark brown tweed fitted jacket but not sure what to wear it with.

OrdinarySnowflake · 09/09/2018 20:12

I think the main take away from the summer was tailoring, things being fitted at the waist or shirts doing the half tuck thing to look smarter.

Adding to winter, then still trying to look neat while warm.

I'm going for thinner knits layered rather than chunky shapeless ones, coats that go in at the waist.

The one I'm going to struggle with is keeping my boots polished! Getting in the habit of throwing the converse in the wash every other week kept them looking smarter and I guess the winter equivalent is polished boots.
