Never mind the (never ending summer) how does one look expensive in Autumn?

Followed the summer thread and really enjoyed it but now I want to get prepared for Autumn.

I love the idea of swanning about in a Burberry type mac but neither the style nor the colour suits me.

How can I look effortless throughout Autumn especially when it's days of wet weather?

Releasing not realising

sunlighthouse · 29/07/2018 15:43

This is my kind of thread!

I have a question about jeans. For far too many years, I have done the "skinny jeans tucked into boots" thing in Autumn/Winter. But is that just terribly unfashionable now? If so, what jeans styles will people be wearing instead, especially with boots? Im a bit lost on those days where it's too cold and rainy to show some ankle.

EnidButton · 29/07/2018 17:10

If I find some knee boots, I will be tucking jeans into boots. Don't know if it's unfashionable but I can't do the cropped trouser thing where I live. I'd freeze.

MulberryPeony · 29/07/2018 17:23

Cognac possibly LuxuryWoman? I’ve tried Uniqlo’s merino, cashmere and Milano knits. In fact I’m wearing the Milano knit now with skinny jeans and my ugly shoes Bubble lol. I love them!

Cripes have you seen the Clark’s Hamble Oaks? A lovely traditional brogue.

VanillaSugar · 29/07/2018 17:31

Latently placemarking

LuxuryWoman2018 · 29/07/2018 18:09

Cognac yes that might be the colour is mean, kind of rich mid brown. I do have a habit of imagining clothes I want that don't actually exist though!

namastayinbed · 29/07/2018 19:19

sunlight I have the same question!

YukonGold · 29/07/2018 19:23

Joining in! I’ve just started on my quest for the perfect wool funnel neck coat in both navy and dark grey.

I’m also on the search for the perfect flat or block heel knee boots in a rich brown. If I can’t find any I’ll have to revert to Dune / Bertie button boots, I already have these in black and love them, even though they make my feet look huge, their sizing is very generous!

0teaandtoast0 · 29/07/2018 20:26

Joining too - my favourite time of year!

I'm trying not to buy loads this year and insteas focusing on good quality basics, so I'm looking for some tall brown boots (slightly trickier on a short person), a couple of nice woollen skirts, and maybe a pinafore or two to wear with shirts and polo necks when it gets colder. I also need some new skinny jeans as mine seem to have given up the ghost - dark denim, not too stretchy, and able to tuck them into said boots.

I second what others have said about Uniqlo on here - continually impressed and I'll be stocking up on polo necks as soon as they bring them out!

QueenOfIce · 29/07/2018 20:54

What sort of Autumn/winter coats is everyone going for this year? I have a knee length padded coat that I've worn every year for 6 years. It's like a big duvet, not at all stylish but it's so warm!

I did try the long camel wool coat idea last year but camel is not my colour and I couldn't find anything else that looked good so I went back to the duvet. Need to do better this year!

I have a beautiful burnt orange one I bought last year, so I think I'll be sticking with that! I'm hankering after another in a good colour though - maybe a dark green or a bright blue. It made such a difference going for something other than my usual black or navy last year.

BangingOn · 29/07/2018 21:55

A dark green coat would be lovely.

I am planning a third autumn/winter in my Lagerfeld cream wool cocoon coat, although I’m still not certain whether it will be a classic or something that dates. I have two leather jackets, a lovely Whistles burgundy biker style and a cheaper, bright red biker, both of which I adore.

Despite having these (and many others) I am still looking for the perfect military coat. I’ve ordered one from La Redoute to try as I’ve had success with their coats before.

sunlighthouse · 29/07/2018 22:09

enid I think with knee high boots it's different, you can't really go for cropped jeans in that scenario Grin I'm more of an ankle boot girl though!

nama glad it's not just me Smile I think I'll probably end up going for jeans which are more straight leg/slim and then roll them so they just meet the top of the boots. And on cold days I'll wear brightly coloured socks and just style it out like I meant them to be ever so slightly visible!

EnidButton · 29/07/2018 22:43

Sunlight I mainly wear ankle boots so I suppose I tuck them in then too. There's not much to tuck in so never thought about it really. I tend to get low ankle boots though. Plus I have skinny ankles so the extra material helps pad them out. I might try them the way you suggest too. Quite like the bright sock idea. Smile
I don't have any knee boots yet but they're on The List.

EnidButton · 29/07/2018 22:46

For coats I'm determined to find the perfect wool coat this year. I want a single breasted one with a fitted waist or tailored shape, mid thigh. Burgundy or grey I think but I'm open. Don't suit camel colours. Also going to get a down jacket in white or cream. Leather jacket as usual but hoping for a new one if I find it.

Coats and boots are what I spend the most on. I think they make the most difference to an outfit in the colder months.

evilharpy · 29/07/2018 23:50

I would love a camel wool coat but am not sure it’d suit me. Has anyone seen a nice, reasonably priced one?

Shenanagins · 30/07/2018 08:04

This year I will be looking for a nice wool coat that’s not black or beige. Going to also have a look at the uniqulo jumpers this year given the rave reviews they get.

Billydessert · 30/07/2018 08:50

Thanks for the woolovers info, perhaps the quality has gone down since I last bought from them.

With skinny jeans and ankle boots I've been considering wearing cable knit socks when the weather gets really cold. Bit of a throw back to the 80s and I'm not sure if it's going to be in fashion but I love the look! Hmm

I'd like a pair of Celtic and Co boots and still looking for the perfect wool coat in navy or grey.

PNGirl · 30/07/2018 11:31

Re: new stuff in shops, most of my boots are from Duo but they haven't released their full new range yet. I reckon it'll be a bit later in August. I have already bought some tan western-style ankle boots though.

Clothes wise there's new stuff in places like Uniqlo but an awful lot of it is t-shirts, short-sleeved dresses and sleeveless tops.

rainbowsandfeathers · 30/07/2018 13:00

My favourite time of year for clothes.
I'm mostly in skinny jeans, blazers and scarfs abs a thin knit jumper if cold. I have joules Chelsea boots but I'm in need of a new pair of knee highs that aren't to expensive and don't have eleastic on the backs.

Rollerbird · 30/07/2018 13:40

Me too with blazer love.
Might go for slouchy boots too

Cambionome · 30/07/2018 13:58

Just seen some nice looking coats on the Mango website (3/4 length single breasted wool mix) but I've never bought from them before. Anyone got any thoughts as to their quality/sizing?

MidLifeCrisis2017 · 30/07/2018 15:41

@EnidButton - great name.

I bought a beautiful soft leather jacket in Mango. My favourite shop for expensive dressing is Massimo Dutti and their leather is great quality. If you happen to go to Spain or Portugal, they do special prices, lower than other Euro countries- same for Zara.

I bought a tan leather blazer in a shop in Barcelona for under £50. I have outerwear issues!

EnidButton · 30/07/2018 16:05

Thanks Midlife Smile

I think late August for A/W stock sounds about right. I don't want to buy lots too early but I'm so bored of looking at Summer clothes. This rainy weather has me longing for Autumn.

MulberryPeony · 30/07/2018 18:35

Next clearance has some pure collection cashmere at good prices. More for winter but I ordered the knitted dress with kimono sleeves and it is stunning!
