Never mind the (never ending summer) how does one look expensive in Autumn?

Followed the summer thread and really enjoyed it but now I want to get prepared for Autumn.

I love the idea of swanning about in a Burberry type mac but neither the style nor the colour suits me.

How can I look effortless throughout Autumn especially when it's days of wet weather?

That's good to know @MidLifeCrisis2017 thank you!

A dark green or taupe suede handbag.

I want to get the enthusiasm for a new season, I really do, but I have bought a lot in the last 12 months (ie, new waterproof coats for mild and cold weather- navy and olive) new indigo jeans (wide and girlfriend cuts); I own boots in grey, burgundy, tan and black, so apart from replacing worn out cashmere V necks, I am going to be all about the cheap fashion tweaks. I have new or newish down jackets, leathers, and dress up kit, plus scarves for all the options., I am struggling to find gaps to shop for. So again, I shall be looking for the very high fashion cheapies that make a mature woman look as if she reads Vogue, or whatever. If you know what those might be, please tell.

Rollerbird · 27/07/2018 21:32

I tried this jacket on in Next and it looks great on, but I don't know what I would wear it with except jeans or navy trousers!

The last M&S cashmere I bought had really dodgy sizing, and then shrank on first wash. I won't be buying any more from them.

I don't care about looking 'expensive' but am looking forward to wearing jeans, ankle boots and jackets again - Autumn is my favourite season. I've bought some straight legged Levis (one grey pair, one dark blue) because I'm bored of black skinnies.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/07/2018 21:38

I'd really like a leather midi skirt, but haven't yet found 'the one'.

Gah81 · 27/07/2018 21:40

Ah, bring on autumn. I am another HoC Autumn (leaf autumn) and will be donning my beige tweed cape/camel coat/rust jacket/khaki cargos/cream or orange silk blouses/mustard skirt/tan brogues/brown stiletto heel combinations as soon as the first leaf starts to fall! Grin

BangingOn · 27/07/2018 22:04

Autumn is my favourite season to dress for, I am excited already.

I’ve been on the hunt for a pair of perfect long boots in a chestnut or cognac colour for a few years. I’m prepared to spend the money on a gorgeous pair but haven’t found anything just right.

I do love a leather jacket in the autumn too, I have a butter-soft Whistle’s leather jacket that looks fab with oversized scarves and silky knit jumpers.

Cripesalive · 27/07/2018 22:08

Please can I join the thread?

This sunny weather is glorious, but I really miss wearing ankle boots Smile

On the look out for the perfect pair of brogues for this autumn, any suggestions?

evilharpy · 27/07/2018 22:27

I live in trench coats (not Burberry but I have a couple from Zara), knee length tan or black boots, skinny jeans for casual, jersey dresses for work. Big chunky scarves for when it gets colder. I like the paper bag trousers that are showing up everywhere. I have a black and white striped warm dress from Boden that I absolutely love and wear with long tan boots, it always gets compliments.

SpeckledyHen · 28/07/2018 11:20

Thank you QOI
I have ordered a lime green jumper ( One of my best HoC colours ) from Pure Collection sale :)

Brilliant speckled let me know if you like it!

Gabor sometimes have nice boots, I bought a pair of chestnut boots 4 years ago, wore them straight out of the box never had to break them in, so so comfortable. They're only just starting to look tired.

Placemarking. I love autumn clothes. After not wearing skinnies all summer because of the heat, I’ve realised I don’t want to wear them this autumn/winter.

ilovecherries · 28/07/2018 21:30

This may be a stupid question, but how does that Jigsaw trench coat fasten? In the picture with it closed over it looks as if it doesn’t have any buttons?

FlorenceLyons · 28/07/2018 22:06

I've just ordered these in the Jigsaw sale: www.jigsaw-online.com/product/pressed-flannel-crop-trouser/J34129_OR020.

Figured they were a cheaper version of these Me+Em trousers some of us were lusting after recently: www.meandem.com/transformer-wide-leg-trouser-mustard

MulberryPeony · 28/07/2018 23:14

Nice trews Florence. I have a similar pair of wide leg crops from Boden in a camel/tan colour.

MidLifeCrisis2017 · 28/07/2018 23:48

@ilovecherries it has buttons with concealed button holes

rightknockered · 29/07/2018 00:24

I can't decide about this. I'm mid 40s and think I should maybe try to look more polished, but my hair is mad and wavy and I suit a more bohemian look, otherwise I look a bit try hard. I like bright colours and love burgundy and red, green and purple. I like the idea of mixing with brown this autumn, which would also look good with cream and black.
I basically have no idea what I'm doing, I'm too entrenched in my slightly hippy summer style.

rightknockered · 29/07/2018 00:27

I have quite a collection of newish coats and leather jackets, the only outer wear I would like is maybe some sort of blazer, maybe tweed, but really good traditional brown with bright flecks tweed. And new boots, burgundy or brown mock croc.

storynanny · 29/07/2018 00:43

Re woolovers, I bought a few jumpers last Winter on recommendation from a friend and they didnt wear well at all. Shrank a bit and eent bobbly. Also even though I am very short, they were not very long.

ilovecherries · 29/07/2018 09:53

Ah, thanks, midlife. Have ordered it to try - great bargain if I love it.

LuxuryWoman2018 · 29/07/2018 13:59

I've never ordered from Uniqlo before but see them recommended all the time so I reckon I'll take a look for jumpers. Gabor boots sound good I think I've seen things on Brand Alley before, bags look nice too.

I've ordered several bags from this company and follow them on FB, they have a 25% sale until midnight with code HEAT25 very good non-branded leather bags www.myexquisite.com I've recommended them on a few threads

I really need a wool/cashmere coat this year, they really smarten up an outfit I think, I'd quite like a sort of dark tan colour if such a thing exists, lighter than dark brown, darker than beige - what would you call that colour?

I have a BIG birthday soon, I was wondering whether to ask for vouchers (or botox!) I would like a really nice watch I think and my family are generous - we like to mark occasions.

EnidButton · 29/07/2018 15:18

I love Autumn clothes. Also Winter, but there's something about the different textures and layering in Autumn that's so satisfying.

I want a leather midi, not bothered if it's faux so long as it's matte not shiny. Suede shortish skirt. Leather jacket that's buttery soft and lightweight. Mid thigh length wool coat. Some kind of chiffony cream or white blouse with lace detail, I can picture it in my head and it's nice- honest! Fancy some knee length boots, have loads of ankle ones. Some thin but warm merino wool jumpers, think uniqlo will be where I get these. Will stock up on my usual opaque tights.

Randomly I need some very comfy short style knickers. I suppose sloggi look the most practical but they're not very nice looking. Sure I'll get over myself and buy some of those.

So ready for it to be Autumn now. I'm not a Summer person. No idea if I 'look expensive' tbh but I aim for put together and polished. Don't always achieve it mind. Grin

EnidButton · 29/07/2018 15:22

Luxury It looks like there will be a lot of browns and tans around so you might be in luck. Agree a wool coat pulls everything together.

When do most places start fully realising their A/W stock online? The sales are still around and I'm sure they've all been bringing out more summer stuff later than they usually do. Presumably because of the unusual heat. There's a few bits but doesn't seem like lots yet. Is it usually late August or before then?
