Seeing as the Spencer wedding thread in S&B was so popular, here's a thread to discuss all royal fashion.

(If we could stick to critiquing the clothes rather than the women wearing them then that would be great!)

I assume that MM didn't actually buy the $55k dress - she could hardly wear it again, but if she rang up pretty much any designer in the world and asked to borrow a frock for a photo shoot with HRH they would fall over themselves to loan her whatever she wanted

SenecaFalls · 05/07/2018 15:07

it's nice to know that there's going to be another queen in Europe in due course

I agree. And more to keep her company. Sweden, Norway, Belgium, and Spain have queens regnant in their future. (Spain, assuming Princess Leonor does not require a brother, which I think unlikely.)

SenecaFalls · 05/07/2018 15:09

acquire, not require. (The speech to text feature on my phone seems to have difficulty translating my Southern US accent.)

BagelGoesWalking · 05/07/2018 15:42

IvyFluids All of Princess Mary's outfits in that link are gorgeous, especially the black dress with white bodice - pockets!

I think maybe Kate doesn't really want to try anything more exciting or outré. She knows she'll get bad press if someone thinks what she wore wasn't right, was too expensive etc. The fairly plain dress coats are safe. Who knows what she wears in private?

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/07/2018 15:56

Jeans and a Breton top, it seems!

Totally agree with the Kate in a coat dress discussions - so boring and ‘old’ for her age and figure. She is turning into a Queen/Duchess of Cornwall mini-me in style. However, I think she is suffering from the curse of succession. She will be Queen one day and so has obviously toned down the official wardrobe as her duties and responsibilities have increased e.g. Play it safe, don’t do/wear anything that stands out. Megan, Sophie etc are free to pick and choose and make a statement. Chances of them being Queen are pretty slim. I’m guessing that Kate does not have their freedom when it comes to style and it would not be seen as proper for her to wear a jumpsuit to a charity dinner as Sophie did for example. Different era but I once read about the Queen and Princess Margaret and how the Queen had to keep a look of respectability as a princess because she would be Queen one day whilst Margaret was allowed to try different foreign designers and look different.

At least Kate’s casual wardrobe is a bit more normal (Zara dress to the polo) but again those wedges/nude shoes !!!!!!!

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/07/2018 15:59

@halfwitpicker You can have Haakon, I'll take Carl Philip of Sweden!

Prince Fredrick for me. Mary has quite a catch there!

halfwitpicker · 05/07/2018 16:04

Lordy Queen, he's a bit of alright too!

Whitesea · 05/07/2018 16:06

I can’t see any reason why Kate can’t be more adventurous. Some things might be out - but she is hardly going to choose a bra top, a mini skirt and over the knee boots for official outings anyway. I can’t see any reason why she couldn’t wear a trouser suit or nicer clothing. She dresses two generations older than she is. Perhaps it is fear of getting it wrong or putting a foot out of line. It is a shame really. The dress she wore to Pippa’s wedding was like something out of Mary Poppins. Hopefully MM will help her.

MikeUniformMike · 05/07/2018 16:11

Kate could wear something from the high street and she would look great. She seems to favour Mother-of-the-Bride type outfits. She always looks great though.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 05/07/2018 17:20

Exactly whitesea yes she is going to be queen but so was Diana and she did not hold back! I can understand Kate to wanting to go completely down that road and I think she is not really into fashion anyway but those mother of the bride outfits need to go, like a previous poster said she has everything going for her, tall, slim, attractive and with fabulous hair! When she gets it right she looks sensational, I love everything about this picture, in my opinion she has never looked better.

I think that dress Kate wore to Pippa's wedding made her boobs look saggy!

She looks amazing in bettys pic's.

OlennasWimple · 05/07/2018 17:53

Diana got more adventurous after her split with Charles, though, didn't she?

MikeUniformMike · 05/07/2018 17:57

I think maybe any sagging would be caused by having a very young baby not by the dress.

Clionba · 05/07/2018 18:07

She didn't have a young baby at the time of Pippa's wedding. It was an incredibly expensive and very unflattering outfit.

MikeUniformMike · 05/07/2018 18:21

Oh you're right. I can't see any sagginess. She has a lovely figure. Hereditary, from the photos of her mother. God knows what you'd say about my bosom.

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/07/2018 18:30

I think Diana's style refined itself and got sleeker after her divorce but it could've also been due to changing fashions. The 80s were pretty OTT and she she fully partook in it!

In fact, she got more stylish as she aged. So has Sophie Wessex. It's only poor Kate who's gone the other way. I just don't think she's as into clothes as her European counterparts or her cousins-in-law.

OP posts:
QueenOfTheAndals · 05/07/2018 18:32

The dress she wore to Pippa's wedding was very poorly tailored. I highly doubt she has any issues with sagginess but it looked like the top half been cut for someone with a far larger bust.

OP posts:
Clionba · 05/07/2018 18:36

And it cost £££!! She'd have been better off with a nice dress from the High Street.

MikeUniformMike · 05/07/2018 18:39

I would imagine the tailoring to be immaculate, but she could have worn something from the high street and would have looked good. I do think she dresses a bit older than she is.

Whitesea · 05/07/2018 19:03

I too think Diana embraced fashion. Kate doesn’t. Even her casual look of a Breton top with jeans whenshe has everything at her fingertips. The Vogue covershoot told us everything we need to know about Kate’s natural style. Surrounded by stylists and advisors and she chose that.

paradyning · 05/07/2018 19:25

MM is In yellow! To the poster wishing she wore colour.

(Must admit find the MM initials slightly confusing as I confuse it with the Norwegian Crown Princess!)

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/07/2018 20:07

A bright colour at last! Perhaps MM has been on MN?
