Royal style: Kate/Meghan/Bea/Euj, Maxima/Mary/Letizia/Victoria

Seeing as the Spencer wedding thread in S&B was so popular, here's a thread to discuss all royal fashion.

(If we could stick to critiquing the clothes rather than the women wearing them then that would be great!)

I would just like to say I loved Camilla's dress she wore for her visit to Salisbury yesterday

UpperWallop · 23/06/2018 07:26

I think Kate is exquisite and dresses perfectly for the occasion. MM otoh has, to date, chosen some truly awful outfits.

WipsGlitter · 23/06/2018 07:59

I loved the Emilia Wickstead black suit she wore but wasn't she the one who dissed the wedding dress? Doubt she will get more business!

Clionba · 23/06/2018 08:06

The clothes for Vogue were a terrible disappointment. Kate is fortunate to have that tall slender frame that most clothes look good on. As the York women demonstrate, it's more of a challenge if you're curvy. Having said that, Eugenie has worn some lovely dresses recently.

QueenOfTheAndals · 23/06/2018 08:12

@WipsGlitter Yes that was Emilia Wickstead. Interestingly, Sophie continues to wear her designz and several of her recent outfits have been Wicksteads. So she isn't persona non grata with the entire family.

I think Sophie has good taste, but she always seems to go for that mid-calf length which doesn’t flatter her at all. If she lopped everything off at the knee she would look much better.

Meghan has a tendency to choose dresses that swamp her a bit (Ascot and the Spencer wedding); I can totally understand her desire to avoid anything with the suggestion of ‘slinky’, but you need a bigger frame to carry off that style of dress, I think. She’s very thin and not tall, fitted dresses suit her much more.

GrumpySausage · 23/06/2018 08:29

I'm a fan of Sophie's style, I always think she's gets it right. I also like Letizia's style. I feel she adopts a more causal style when needed and it works.

I'm not a fan of the very neon colours the Queen is going for at the moment. I prefer her in the muted lilacs/pinks etc.

My one bug bear for all the British royals is the shoes the women wear! They always seem so plain and clunky. Kate is the worst with those nude court shoes but no one ever seems to try a strappy sandal or pointed toe.

QueenOfTheAndals · 23/06/2018 08:39

The Queen sticks to the same black sensible shoes regardless of what colour outfit she wears. I think she must have several pairs of them but at 92 you can’t blame her for choosing comfort over style!

Beatrice and Eugenie usually wear good shoes and Kate makes some good choices when she steps away from the nude pumps. The silver Jimmy Choos she once wore with a dark red pedicure and cream Roland Mouret were lovely. But I’m not sure why she paired the gown with black pumps the second time she wore it.

I know you can talk about whatever you wish, but this thread just feels as if the characters in a Jane Austen novel, the ones who endlessly gossip about who is wearing what, have found the internet through a wormhole...
There are so many actual issues to discuss, and so much to learn about in this big world - do we really need to critique in detail the clothing choices of a group of women, and specifically exclude any comments on their actual actions?

QueenOfTheAndals · 23/06/2018 08:55

Ah. There's always one.

By all means start another thread about their actions, but this is the style and beauty board where, oddly enough, people come to talk about clothes and makeup. And celebrity outfits do tend to get discussed - there's been threads in the past about the gowns of the Oscars, BAFTAs, Met Gala etc. I'm sure we can all talk about much more important topics and no doubt we do on other boards.

And I think I speak for us all when I say that we are all able to discuss more than one issue at a time.

Well said Queen and thank you AnotherDay for saying it’s ok for other people to talk about what they wish! This is ‘style and beauty’ so unsurprisingly people like to talk about style and beauty.

LadyLizziemae · 23/06/2018 09:32

Yes, goose1964, I liked Camilla’s dress too. The fabric close up has a self-paisley pattern which elevated it from a simple navy and white spotted dress. I wonder what the fabric was- silk? It looked very cool and comfortable for a hot day.

Clionba · 23/06/2018 09:32

@AnotherDayAnitherName745 always this criticism. Maybe we are able to discuss other matters as well. I think if we were men discussing football we would not be criticised. Some of us are regularly on discussion threads about all manner of social and political issues.

Clionba · 23/06/2018 09:35

Someone above mentioned Queen Letizia. What I like about her style is that it's often quite business like, smart trouser suits, neat dresses and skirts. I think the British Royals still tend to favour the coat dress kind of style. Letizia does semi formal very well.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 23/06/2018 09:54

Fab thread @QueenOfTheAndals and well moderated 😉

Just wanted to mention a future fashion star,

(Apologies for the robotic YouTube voice) According to Prince William, Charlotte loves fashion and with Diana as her grandmother and Kate as her mum, she should definitely be one to watch. I love the way Kate coordinates her outfits to Charlotte’s and the way the whole family is coordinated on official occasions without being matchy matchy.

Also this is a good blog for Kate’s style.
I will say that Kate has completely mastered Diana’s knack of speaking through clothes. It may not be as interesting to some, but she shows that her family is united, safe. It’s a bit like the Queen Mother, George VI and the princesses.

Queen Letizia is not always “safe”. She loves her red boots!
My favourite royal, style wise is Maxima. I think being Argentinian and with her exuberant personality, she looks just amazing in bold colours.

The Spanish / Latin blood of both women does seem to mean they can carry off bold colours

I once saw a photo of Leticia going out for the evening wearing a minidress and lucite platform heels. Imagine what the Daily Mail would say if Kate donned the same??

And nobody can carry off a massive hat like Maxima. She wears things others couldn't get away with, like gold jumpsuits, and makes them work through the sheer force of her personality. She seems to love being queen and the way King Wax looks at her like he still can't believe his luck is very sweet.

I don't usually fawn over celeb or royal kids but Charlotte really is adorable. Her little tantrum on the tarmac in Canada was hilarious.

OP posts:
CurlyWurlyTwirly · 23/06/2018 10:37

Yes Charlotte is a right character. She will be one to watch as a teen.

QueenOfTheAndals · 23/06/2018 13:09

I just saw this speech by Maxima on YouTube and even though i don't understand a word of Dutch, it's very moving.

Clionba

I think women can discuss football too.🙄

Clionba · 23/06/2018 13:24

@RoseWhiteTips - you are quite right, of course. I hope you get my general point about the perceived value of men's and women's discussions!

RoseWhiteTips · 23/06/2018 13:33

Yes. Sorry!

wizzywig · 23/06/2018 16:33

I think Maxima and Mary of Denmark (is Mary part of this discussion?) wear stunning outfits. Love their tiaras etc.
