sock how is your mouth today? I had two temporary crowns for three weeks last month (the first set of impressions weren’t right and I had to have them redone which added a week to it) and was so scared they were going to pop off, exposing £2K of shaped up root canals. As it turned out she had fixed them so firmly I thought my actual teeth were being extracted when she removed them to fit the permanents.

SotD - Vol de Nuit. Trying to understand this. It's complicated, long-lasting but ethereal. It shimmies around reminding you initially of Apres L'Ondee, then a faint hint Mitousoko's raspiness, and then later the melancholy of L'Heure Bleue. Awesome quiet scent. Can't imagine how wonderful the vintage parfum must be?

OCSock · 14/07/2018 13:49

My mouth has been fine since the locals wore off, thank you, Judy. It's just a matter of waiting for the impressions (on Thursday) and the new porcelain to be made and fitted.

Considering the scented options for gastro-pub dinner this evening...

MrsLucas · 14/07/2018 17:45

*Mitsouko. Oh the shame. Someone please take away my Perfumista stripes.

BlueKittens · 14/07/2018 19:40

SOTD was WIDOMH follows by Amarosa by Ruth Mastenbroek

I’ve taken to wearing two perfumes a day in this intense heat. Amarosa still going strong- it’s a powerhouse!

AdoraBell · 14/07/2018 20:50

Had a sniff of Chanel Gabriella yesterday but didn’t spray it. Regret that now as nowhere here carries Chanel

3DSpex · 14/07/2018 21:55

SOTE Guerlain L’Instant Magic. Another soothing, cosy bedtime scent for me, although haven’t worn it in ages.

Judydreamsofhorses · 14/07/2018 22:03

SOTD Chanel 19. Courage for lunch with my mother.

MrsLucas · 14/07/2018 22:38

Spent the afternoon in very unseasonal Ambre Fetiche. Lovely stuff - smells like a relative of L'AdDM. Anyone know Encens Flamboyant?

PersisFord · 15/07/2018 12:29

Hello you lovely fragrant bunch of summer blossoms. Can I have a perfume intervention please? You guys did me one before.....but life changed and I lost it.....but I’m back.

I’m basically a perfume virgin as almost ANYTHING I try either smells REVOLTING on me (like cat wee as my brother helpfully informed me) or gives me a headache and makes me feel sick. I have had success with Jo Malone but it’s too expensive for me really now. If I borrow my mum’s clothes (has bathed in Chanel no 5 since puberty so is practically saturated in it) I love the smell but on me it smells awful

I like:
Jo Malone - nectarine and honey blossom was my favourite but I also liked the pomegranate one. I tried the freesia one but then it reminded me of air freshener - an expensive mistake.
I’ve got White Company Seychelles hand cream on at the moment and it smells lovely.

I like light, tangy, sweet, clean smells. I think I would like to smell of a rhubarb and custard sweet. Or those kind of appley roses. Or of grass. Or of coconut. I DON’T want to smell of Soap and Glory or like a teenager, and anything musky makes me feel dreadful.

I can’t really get to the shops so will have to rely upon the kindness of online shopping - am I right that there are people who sell little tiny bits to try?

I really am looking forward to my future as a sensory delight. I’ve got a PHENOMENAL sense of smell so I love perfume on other people (was on a plane yesterday and the air hostesses smelled AMAZING), so I would really particularly enjoy smelling nice....

CountFosco · 15/07/2018 13:03

PersisFord your wish is our command: Rhubarb and Custard. What is even better is you can get 40% off with the code 'mrsgloss'

PersisFord · 15/07/2018 13:16

WHAT IS THIS MAGIC?!?! CountFosco I could KISS you!!

But I won’t, because I don’t smell nice (yet!!!)

PestymcPestFace · 15/07/2018 15:37

SotD is Nest Indigo black tea, fig and wood. The first of my US discoveries.

Persis, Rhubarb & Custard is a wonderful scent, you won't regret it. For something tangier and sharper, you might also want to give Rhubarb & Citrus, from the same line, a try.

OK, I hold my hands up. I think I may have found a No Malone that I like. Was sitting next to a woman yesterday evening who smelled gorgeous. Had to ask her what it was - Poppy & Barley. It was quite lush - reminded me a bit of L'air de rien oddly enough because there was a definite earthy, yeasty, musty vibe, although I don't think it shares any notes.

She was wearing waaaaay too much of it, though Grin

PersisFord · 15/07/2018 16:03

unnecessary can I wear the rhubarb and citrus on its own? The R&C is sold out in the small size but I could get the R&Cit then the R&C as a tester size. Then if I like the R&C more I could get the vanilla and mix my own? Have I understood??

I have spent a significant amount of time on that website (work, children, housework all neglected!)

PersisFord · 15/07/2018 16:09

Oh no, just read the bit about it smelling of marijuana. I get those smells confused all the time, with varying degrees of embarrassment....

UnnecessaryFennel · 15/07/2018 16:14

Yes, you can definitely wear it alone - it's lovely in this weather. You can indeed also layer R&Cit with the Creamy Vanilla Custard to make R&Custard!

Tbh, I would recommend getting some of the Vanilla Custard anyway, it's absolutely divine (particularly when the weather gets cooler and you want something cosy and comforting).

I like a lot of 4160 scents (we are mostly all fans on this thread!) but imo those three (R&C, R&Cit, Vanilla Custard) are some of the best scents available from that house.

UnnecessaryFennel · 15/07/2018 16:16

Ha! Funnily enough I was wearing it yesterday and dp said it smelled of dope! But...I don't get that at all - I loathe the smell of marijuana and would definitely not wear it if that's what I could smell Grin

3DSpex · 15/07/2018 16:17

SOTD Nerolia Bianca.

I've yet to try Rhubarb and Custard.

Thinking of the inexpensive 'light, clean, sweet, tangy', fragrances I have/know/enjoy:

  • The Perfume Parlour dupe of Jo Malone Verbenas of Provence
  • Chloe Love Story - lovely fresh orange blossom
  • Elizabeth Aden - Green Tea or White Tea?
  • Jessica Simpson Fancy Girl (don't be put off by the branding Grin - its a light, sweet necatrine and vanilla. It is sweet, but sort of airy and fresh, too)
  • Givenchy Jardin Interdit
  • Boucheron Place Vendome (these two are both light, airy, sweet)

Pricier options:

  • 4160 Tuesdays Tokyo Spring Blossom (you can try a 9ml first bfore committing, though)
  • 4160 Tuesdays MrsGlossMadeMeDoIt
  • The Gucci Flora editions are nice, light EDTs. Very inoffensive and clean smelling. I like the Mandarin and the Gardenia especially.
  • Chanel Gabrielle - not highly rated by perfumistas, but its a fresh, light and sweet floral, good for daytime spring/summer especially

Have you tried any Roger & Gallet fragrances? Philosophy fragrances?
If you like coconut, PP do a nice cheap dupe of Creed Virgin island Water.

3DSpex · 15/07/2018 16:23

For Persis btw Grin

PersisFord · 15/07/2018 17:04

It is safe to assume I haven’t tried any perfumes ever!

Perhaps I will buy 9ml of one of the other 4160 and get a tiny tester of a rhubarb and just check. Less than a coffee if I’m wrong!

I’ve never had philosophy perfume but I had a gingerbread body lotion and that was lovely too. I will investigate!

I have just started looking on perfume parlour....bye bye the rest of the day Grin

Can I ask...do you guys ever buy little tiny squirts on eBay? Or is that unlikely to end well....?

3DSpex · 15/07/2018 17:13

Yes, Persis. I certainly do buy eBay samples. Although check the sellers credentials first!

There are a few sites you can buy samples from, too.

Bloom is popular with MN Perfumistas, but focuses more on niche brands.

Notino is pretty decent for more mainstream samples. Reliable site with fast delivery.

PP is a God send! Grin.

If there is something you're especially lusting after trying its always worth saying on this thread, as we are a generous bunch and have many, any perfumes Grin

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 15/07/2018 17:15

Dropping in from another thread.

Someone there mentioned Mary Greenwell Fire.

Where do you buy it from?

MrsLucas · 15/07/2018 17:38

Welcome Persis and Chardonnay.

We scooped up a lot of the remaindered MG Fire from The Fragrance Shop (in-store and on-line), but I fear we may just about have cleaned them out (check your local store just in case). Ebay may be your best bet?
