Is this top really ageing/unflattering?

I always like the look of these Crew rugby shirts. www.crewclothing.co.uk/rugby-top-whe002-whtblu/
They have one in the sale now and I thought I might try it. I'm in my 20s and I know the tops aren't the height of stylishness, but are they really ageing and unflattering ?

OK down the stables perhaps as riding attire but quite mumsy as general wear. Sorry.

RoseWhiteTips · 05/04/2018 21:01

Bettyfood

Breton tops are classics and don't age anyone.

Exactly! Some people have no taste.

Agustarella · 05/04/2018 22:22

In defence of cold shoulder tops, it's often pretty easy to snip off the sleeves and ta-dah, a nice sleeveless top. I think you'd need couturier levels of skill to turn a rugby top into something flattering. I'm partial to a Breton top though, those are usually a nice shape.

Stroller15 · 05/04/2018 22:34

I quite like them too! I'm 33 and have a whole closet full of different Breton tops and this looks like a slightly different, casual option. Do you wear a shirt under it?

DrowningEveryDay · 05/04/2018 22:36

If you're slim, you can wear it with denim skirts.

DrowningEveryDay · 05/04/2018 22:36

Denim short skirts I mean.

BusterGonad · 05/04/2018 22:50

I wouldn't really call that a Brenton, isn't it a rugby shirt?!?!

littlebillie · 05/04/2018 22:54

Horrible get something like this

Jazzy11 · 05/04/2018 23:02

I like them :) would look good with dark blue skinny jeans and white pumps/glossies/vans with sunnies on your head! Team with a joules gilet and perfect casual preppy look

RoadToRivendell · 06/04/2018 06:26

You got the J.Crew one, right? Which colour?

ferrier · 06/04/2018 08:31

I wouldnt call that a Breton either.
It's got a deep V neck and the stripes are wider than usual.

ferrier · 06/04/2018 08:33

That's the one from LivBonas not the joules one.

LivBonas · 06/04/2018 08:53

I did order the J.Crew one as well ☺️ Hasn't come yet, but I ordered the red and white stripe colour !
I've already got so many Breton tops, I don't need any more 😂 Although, on another note, does anyone find the Breton tops from Joules are a strange shape? They are always small on the bust for me, and then are loose around my stomach, so are always unflattering. I wish they suited me as I love the colours and prints they do !

It's dreadful from a style perspective. Seriously do not go there...to your question about it being ageing, yes it will look frumpy.

To your question about it being unflattering, my daughter looks good in her long sleeved hockey shirt which is same style but more tailored to the body. She is size 4-6 though, and super fit. I think unless you are slim and long limbed, this will be unflattering. If you are slim and long limbed, other things will still be more flattering.

Comfortable, washable, keeps the sun off. Nope. Far too practical . you are female.and must wear floaty things with little twiddles in pink.

I think if your going to wear a rugby top, the only way it ever looks really cool is if it’s an actual rugby top that you’ve pinched off your boyfriend.

Floisme · 06/04/2018 09:22

I think that if you're going to continue conflating looking older with 'unflattering' then you're letting yourself in for a thoroughly demoralising middle and old age.

However I do think this kind of top can be particularly unkind to a lot of middle aged women - which I see you are not. This is because they somehow manage to be both clingy and shapeless at the same time. Most clothing that clings to your boobs also defines your waist by way of compensation but these tops don't. So you end up with a torso that looks like a big, saggy box, especially if you then compound it with horizontal stripes.

This is why they are in my own personal style 101, along with linen trousers.

However regardless of your age, if you're flat chested or if your boobs pass the pencil test then I think this kind of top looks fine.

Are you always such a great crashing bore?

I've had great luck with the LL Bean breton tops. Gorgeous.

Haha. The floaty things will usually have the dreadful hole on the shoulder.

RoseWhiteTips · 06/04/2018 10:26

The preppy look is always a good look. It oozes class.

BusterGonad · 06/04/2018 10:37

I do t think that thinking a rugby shirt is unflattering means that all women should wear 'floaty things with little twiddles in pink' it just means that personally I think a top that's very square and boxed shape isn't flattering. For me personally if clothes are square shaped on the hanger it usually means that in my body they will also be square shaped, my body isn't square, things which are curved to fit my curves generally look better on the hanger and on my body. Failing that something with a bit of stretch and a lower neck line also look good. The lower neck line separates my body up a bit making me look a bit more/better proportioned.

GrannyGrissle · 07/04/2018 21:51

I like them, they look smart and neat.

BennyTheBall · 07/04/2018 21:54

It's the sort of top my 80 year old mil would wear with capris and Hotter sandals for a day trip with the WI.

Qwertytypewriter · 07/04/2018 22:03

I think if you buy it and its a neat fit, you will get away with it.
But they aren't going to be a neat fit, even on the website they look droopy and saggy.

One of the other brands suggested would be a lot smarter....but agree its a bit middle aged for a 30 something, try Joules, or debenhams Mantaray range instead :-)
