Is this top really ageing/unflattering?

I always like the look of these Crew rugby shirts. www.crewclothing.co.uk/rugby-top-whe002-whtblu/
They have one in the sale now and I thought I might try it. I'm in my 20s and I know the tops aren't the height of stylishness, but are they really ageing and unflattering ?

I'm in my 50s and wouldn't wear it either :)

I understand the look you are going for but the shape just isn't flattering.

I'm quite partial to a nice casual look too.

Yarboosucks · 02/04/2018 15:54

If it helps you… My DM and DF wear Crew Clothing - they are in their 70's….

Walk away!

AnnabelleLecter · 02/04/2018 15:54

Far too pony club mum for my taste.

LivBonas · 02/04/2018 15:54

I've ordered one now...I really hope it does look nice as I think it will be great just to wear with jeans everyday. Hoping it's not too boxy and unflattering

I think I like it because I saw it on my young niece, and she looked fab in it! I know they CAN look nice, I'm just not sure that it would look great on me, but I'll give it a go!

I'm not posh, so it either won't suit me or I'll look like I'm trying to be posh! I'm not the equestrian/pony-club/yacht-club type in the slightest!

These tops are tres preppy but must be worn only by tall, boobless sizes of 6 to avoid boxiness.

mercurymaze · 02/04/2018 15:57

I like it

Bluntness100 · 02/04/2018 15:59

Not for me either. Three reasons, they are very eighties in my mind. I'm 49 and remember when they were actually fashionable. Secondly they are incredibly unflattering due to the shape. Three, they are the sort of top women often wore when they wanted to cover up as they felt unhappy about their weight.

The only way you'd even remotely come close to looking ok in it is if you are tall, slim and it's close fitting. And to be honest, even the models are struggling, the photo has been deliberately taken to make them look close fitting than they are, you can see the extra folds of material if you look closely. In reality those models will look like they are wearing maternity tops.

LivBonas · 02/04/2018 16:06

Yes, I suddenly realised they are quite 80s from that Glamour article about the J. Crew top, the rugby shirt was redesigned from its heyday back then

RoadToRivendell · 02/04/2018 16:11

The J.Crew one isn't boxy. I think you'll like it. I hope you opted for a relatively small size.

LivBonas · 02/04/2018 16:15

I went for Small, although I may be a medium...do they come up quite big? In the review section, some say they come up very small, some say they are a loose fit!

Fugly.

RoseWhiteTips · 02/04/2018 17:30

Cool.

EasterBunBun · 02/04/2018 21:32

I think Crew are very true to size .

Ididnthearanything · 03/04/2018 00:01

I also remember them first time around. Awful, even then. I can’t remember anyone looking well in one.

Thick unflattering fabric, boxy unflattering style, awkward unflattering neckline, collar that always curls up (in an unflattering way Wink) and often the colours ran leaving it an unflattering dismal colour.

But if you like it, buy it. I’m a randomer on t’interweb. I might know jack shit.

EnidButton · 03/04/2018 01:34

People calling it a Breton Top. It's not really. Yes it's stripy but the collar and buttons aren't typical of a Breton t-shirt. By the by really.

It looks like something in an advert at the back of the Daily Mail TV magazine. On the opposite page to some nice beige slacks with an elasticated waist.

EnidButton · 03/04/2018 01:35

Disclaimer: I do not buy the Daily Mail but my MiL does. "Just for the tv bit."

Hausfullofgrls · 03/04/2018 01:55

Horizontal lines tend to make you (anyone) very wide. It's not a flattering design. But if you like it, then you like it.

halfwitpicker · 03/04/2018 01:56

I like them.

adayatthebeach · 03/04/2018 02:02

Looks well made, neat and tidy. Looks fine to me.

echt · 03/04/2018 04:41

I wouldn't be caught dead in it. Literally.

Peanutbuttercups21 · 03/04/2018 07:22

Well, I would wear it.

I even own that exact down gilet modelled with it Grin

Weirdly (maybe) it is the sort of top that suits me/flatters my figure. Nobody would bat an eyelid at anyone wearing a top like that where I live (a Hampshire village)

I would not wear it with the collar up though (too 80s wannabe posh)

For reference, am 6ft size 12 and 47

lasttimeround · 03/04/2018 08:51

This is very posh preppy. Ive seen women pull this off. But generally thin and quite long in torso. Flat chested or at least jit busty. And that wealth polish of being seriously well groomed in very understated way. That looks good although its nit my taste.
But I can't do it. Too short, busty curvy. And just too round. Thus is for an angular type.
In terms of a casual throw on id always go for something softer

sportyfool · 03/04/2018 11:16

It's a rugby top , we used to wear them
For cross country .. if you like it buy it 🤷‍♀️

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 03/04/2018 11:30

I think they are what you buy when you want to be invisible. Virtually everything looks good on young, slim women - that won't necessarily translate to an older woman wearing the same clothes. I get the temptation though - those tops are so easy.
