Is this top really ageing/unflattering?

I always like the look of these Crew rugby shirts. www.crewclothing.co.uk/rugby-top-whe002-whtblu/
They have one in the sale now and I thought I might try it. I'm in my 20s and I know the tops aren't the height of stylishness, but are they really ageing and unflattering ?

why is it ageing? - genuine question. Shock
It may be unflattering on some figures but that has nothing to do with 'age'
FYI - I have several seasalt/joules tops that I wear over t shirts and with skinny jeans (all bottomed out with skechers go-step shoes. )
All very comfortable for dog-walking/shopping/on holiday (not cruising) and I am 71 Shock. Why not?
Who are the fashion police to decide if someone should/should not wear a particular style if it suits their figure/fits in with their lifestyle, or it is what they themselves want to wear

LivBonas · 02/04/2018 15:24

Oh, I've just found the one on J Crew and I like that one as well! I'm going to give it a go, I think they look nice

It's terribly cute, you can get it monogrammed if that's your thing. I imagine it would age beautifully, I'd wash and dry the hell out of it.

clothcollector · 02/04/2018 15:26

its a bit "posh wannabe" in my opinion - it looks like something people round my way would wear with velvet puffed alice bands and pearl studs.

A bit dated to me but like others said .... its all about how you style it
if you were slim and wore it duchess of cambridge style then it probably would look nice with white leather trainers or brown boat shoes.

SealSong · 02/04/2018 15:27

Terrible, fine if you are a horsey gymkhana mum, to wear with a frumpy padded 'country' jacket, but not otherwise.

RoadToRivendell · 02/04/2018 15:28

why is it ageing? - genuine question.

It does really look like a middle-aged American tourist thing, don't know how else to explain it. I can see it in my head with cargo shorts & sport sandals.

That being said, I love the J.Crew one and think it would look adorably preppy/sporty on a 20-something.

Very cute with short shorts or a denim mini-skirt.

Tika77 · 02/04/2018 15:29

I’m 40 and I love Crew rugby tops. They’re the warmest material I can get, they keep their ‘boxy’ shape and hide my muffin top quite well. These last ages and if you get the right size they’re flattering.

Oblomov18 · 02/04/2018 15:31

Vile. Unfeminine and unflattering.

JessTessMess · 02/04/2018 15:31

Hmmm I’m late 30s and this top screams frumpster to me, I’ve never seen anyone over 25 look sexy in one - someone very slight who wore it pretty tight might look ok, but if you already look like Gigi Hadid, you can wear almost anything and look good.

That said, if you like it, who the hell cares it’s how it makes you feel.

Stormwhale · 02/04/2018 15:32

Rivendell - and one of those awful visor things with the green plastic bit. Like this.

It's a top to go sailing in. With a pair of cropped jeans and some topsiders.

I personally wouldn't wear it (as a 40-year-old American), but I tend towards more feminine styles.

RoadToRivendell · 02/04/2018 15:34

Please forgive the Glamour link (!)

www.glamour.com/story/jcrew-bringing-back-classic-roll-neck-sweaters-rugby-shirts

Just over half-way down, behold the J.Crew rugby shirt.

megletthesecond · 02/04/2018 15:34

I'm afraid so.
Although I do know a school mum who wears them and they look fine on her. She's quite busy and fresh faced, good hair too. I'd look about 90 in one.

clumsyduck · 02/04/2018 15:35

Of course clothes can be ageing it's not being rude to point that out .
Otherwise I'd just buy those elasticised waist cotton fake denim trousers my grandma used to live in that you see advertised in the back of take a break magazine !!

Rugby shirt style tops came in fashion about 10 years back, I had a couple and they looked boxy and unflattering then and I was about 20

steff13 · 02/04/2018 15:35

I’ve never seen anyone over 25 look sexy in one.

I can't imagine anyone looking sexy in one. I think the best you could hope for is "cute."

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 02/04/2018 15:35

I think they're great if you team them with jodhs and riding boots, or actual sport gear, but otherwise, nah, sorry.

MrsKoala · 02/04/2018 15:36

It's a bit Judith Chalmers/Claire Balding. Who do both look good, but it's not a look I would go for. I'm 41 and would think it was a little old and masculine for me.

JessTessMess · 02/04/2018 15:36

Yeah it’s just too easy to get wrong if you’re not pencil thin and 25 like that jcrew model.

LivBonas · 02/04/2018 15:36

The general consensus is that they look better on younger people, but I'll try one anyway and see what it looks like :)

Ebeneser · 02/04/2018 15:39

If you want one, get one.
I’ve a few rugby tops. I’m nearly 40, but I don’t give a shit. I’ll wear whatever I want, even if it makes me look “frumpy”. If it’s comfortable and warm, it’ll do me, but then i’ve never much cared for fashion. If people judge you on what you wear, then they aren’t worth knowing and it says more about them than you.

CrazyCatLady18 · 02/04/2018 15:40

Awful sorry

notacooldad · 02/04/2018 15:43

Tbh, I do think it's the kind of thing worn by older people - but what's wrong with being older
Nothing wrong with being older but why add years to yourself if you don't have to.

ImogenTubbs · 02/04/2018 15:45

To me it screams middle aged posh country type who'd pop one on with her Barbour jacket and Hunter wellies while taking the black Labs for a bracing walk. However there is absolutely nothing wrong with that (and that description describes several of my dear friends Grin)

If you want one, get one!

MissTeri · 02/04/2018 15:48

Mid 30s here, I like it and I'd buy one if my boobs were smaller. I don't think it'd be flattering on a larger bust but think it would look great on some body shapes.

Just to add a disclaimer here - I am the kind of person who prefers practical clothing and don't dress with the aim of being feminine/cute/sexy etc.

OCSockOrphanage · 02/04/2018 15:50

Forty years ago, I bought them in white from the children's department and wore them very tight. Now, no...................
