That’s very striking @ememem84, I love vibrant colours. The green at the end of the middle row is very pretty. You’re making me think of a metallic green eyeliner I’ve seen . I’m trying to hold off, but I think it would be really good for autumn/winter. Still very much in a nude/gold summer shimmer place just now, but starting to think of stronger colours.

What kind of car do you want @PurpleNailVarnish? Focus on the goal! That lip colour is lovely. I got a Pixi Lip Icing Lip Glow in Cake a few weeks ago and it felt like summer in a bottle. Look forward to hearing about your experiments!

Lots of empties! I’m doing really well pushing stuff to a conclusion since I joined the thread. Thank you, it’s really helping.

So:

Alpha-H Liquid Gold Resurfacing Body Cloths- these were pretty good. I probably won’t buy them again though I don’t think I need them. They’d be great prep in the run up to a self-tan though.

Soleil Toujours Set and Protect Micro Mist Spf 30- gave me spots! So that’s a no.

Altruist SpF30 Spray- have bought more already. Really love it, cheap, effective, easy to use, dermatologist recommended. Got the tip from Dr Dray (a dermatologist) on YouTube. Someone on another thread here recommended her. She’s really good- very minimalist on skincare and she’s really helping me dial back what I want to buy and keep it simple. She’s really quite funny in a geeky girl Sheldon for skincare kind of way. And she’s obviously a very nice person at heart.

Oskia Super 16 Serum mini- bought this for travelling and have already bought another one as it’s pretty good and a great size for hand luggage. Probably wouldn’t buy a full size though.

Cartier Clay Mask in Pink Clay and Aloe Vera- used to love this but it gives me spots now (think they’ve increased the shea butter). So I’ve been using it on patches on hard skin on feet and knees as it’s got lactic acid in it, just so I don’t have to throw it out.

Faith in Nature Fragrance Free Conditioner and Coconut Conditioner- these are staples and I already have back-ups in the stash.

Can we mention stuff we’ve lost? I left an Ere Perez Jojoba Eye Pencil in Stone in a hotel room last week. It was lovely, really subtle day time colour. Shimmery slate-y taupe with a bit of shimmer. Soft and gorgeous to put on. I’ll get another one when I’m back close to the shop as the lady who owns it was really lovely and chatty.

But in the meantime I got a Pixi Eye Define Waterline in Black, which is one of those automatic pencils you don’t need a sharpener for.

@PurpleNailVarnish I want a new car too! I'm trying to save so i can buy it without a lease in 2021 but it would be great if i managed to save the money before 2021 (maybe 2020) because my current car is dying on me and i've been spending a lot with it's maintenance.

One of my friends is going on a no buy year (not just makeup and toiletries, everything that's not a basic need). I've done it before and now she is asking me to join her. I might do this but only with toiletries and books. I've not decided to do it yet, though.

I had 10 ins this month so far, but they were all gifts. One empty: Mandacaru hand cream from L'Occitane Au Brésil. This was not so good; it has shea butter and grape seed oil and smells amazing but it leaves my hand sticky. My pet peeve with L'Occitane Au Brésil's hand creams is that i find they too oily for brazilian weather. I'll probably not be buying this again.

Inthetropics · 20/07/2018 17:10

*i find they ARE

ThisIsHistory · 20/07/2018 17:56

@intheteopics. Did a “buy nothing new year” once. I had so much money that year! I only lasted about 8 or 9 months but it was brilliant- loads of savings and I was able to pay off my student loan early. That’s a good idea for 2019.

AuntyJackiesBrothersSistersBoy · 20/07/2018 20:00

Clarins Extra Firming Day Cream. Won’t replace though it did smell nice.
Clinique Liquid Soap. Won’t replace but did like it.
Crabtree and Evelyn Lavender Hand Cream
Large Aveeno Non-Colloidal Oats Creme. Will replace....miraculous stuff!

PurpleNailVarnish · 20/07/2018 20:54

I'm thinking of Autumn/winter too, more for clothes than make. I use the same makeup all year round but I've got a lot of it and no imagination so I don't look the same every day.
Did that ^ last sentence even make sense?

@ThisIsHistory I'd like a Golf but DH has designs on me getting a gert posh convertible. That way he can drive his exec car during the week and my car at the weekend. We nearly reached a compromise a few months back on a smaller convertible but the truth is I don't want one! I just want something sensible and reliable. I need to get something soon though. There's loads more backstory to this not in a bad way but that's the short version. What car will you buy @Inthetropics?

I love that Pixi lip glow, that's a beauty.
Is the Chantecaille something you want or another empty @ThisIsHistory.
I don't think I've ever lost any product Confused

Until I read about your slimy hand cream @Inthetropics I thought L'Occitane Au Bresil sounded amazing.

PurpleNailVarnish · 20/07/2018 20:55

Apologies for the boldness there. It was unintentional.

ememem84 · 20/07/2018 21:45

I’m trying to do a no spend on clothes/products unless absolutely necessary until my birthday (October). Unless it’s on a voucher.

woodhill · 21/07/2018 09:59

I've used loads of stuff up on holiday particularly travel sizes. I hardly wore make up as it was so hot.

Have bought very little apart from a half price Clinique mascara, lip crayon and a garnier under eye roll on.

So tempting in USA particularly outlets with excellent offers but bought lots of gifts and still bought hotel toiletries back

ThisIsHistory · 21/07/2018 14:46

That did make sense @PurpleNailVarnish. And the eyeliner is a definite wishlist item. I fancy a make-up swatching expedition soon.

I think I’m going to do a “replacements only” year next year @ememem84. Going to make a good push to use up all my odds and sods this year and get down to just a core routine for next year.

Couple more empties

IGK First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo mini- didn’t like it, too gritty. Did work, just felt horrible.
Fresh Therapies Nourishing Nail Elixir- Had a few bottles and like it, but might take a break for a while to use up other things.

Experiment627 · 22/07/2018 08:26

I am too weak to do a no-buy anything!!!! I gave up fags and booze... PLEASE DON'T MAKE ME GIVE UP BEAUTY PRODUCTS!!!!

I always end up wearing the same thing - I would like to try one of those stylist apps when I move back into normal attire (TBH not sure I will do this ever - maternity wear is much more comfy!)

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

ememem84 · 22/07/2018 10:07

Part of my reason for “no buy” is the impending house move. I hate packing. And unpacking. So the less I have to move the better. Haha!

ememem84 · 22/07/2018 10:07

I’m also very much of the use it or lose it mindset.

PurpleNailVarnish · 22/07/2018 18:22

@ememem84 a no spend until October sounds like a good idea, I like that.
A house move is a good reason to pare things down, as is use it or lose it.

My only potential stumbling block on the no buying stuff front is that we're going on holiday twice! in the next month. I don't usually buy clothes on holidays, even if I go to chic places I like to know what I'm buying and that I can return things if I need to.
Beauty products are a potential pitfall but I'm going to do my best to resist. My two caveats to this are the next SpaceNK and Cult Beauty sample giveaways, which are due around late August/September. I'll use these to stock up on things I do use to get the samples. Also, When I'm abroad if I find any Omorovicza on offer then I'll jump on it.

Replacements only sounds like a good idea @ThisIsHistory.
I didn't like the IGK samples I had either, like you I found them gritty and I didn't like that.

@Experiment627 as I've said before; I've never quite left maternity wear behind Grin. Obviously, I don't walk around in maternity clothes all day, that would be weird, but I definitely look for comfort now, even in my smart work clothes.

I'm motoring through my stash of samples, they've been good for helping me find things that really do work on my skin.

Can anyone recommend a light foundation that would be good for my rosacea skin? I currently use ByTerry Light Expert click brush, which is good but I think it probably makes my skin worse when I've taken it off. Powder foundations don't work because they emphasise any lumps and bumps in my skin.

I have a list of empties from this week:

  • Intenso softening and smoothing shampoo sample.
The smell was ok but I didn't notice any different results on my hair.
  • Kerastase chronologiste shampoo.
One of DD's half empties, again it smelt nice but I didn't see any improvement in my hair.
  • REN Evercalm global protection daycream sample.
At first I wasn't that impressed by this but after using it for a few days I really liked it and I would by it again. I saw a reduction in my rosacea and it sunk in well.
  • Eve Lom time retreat face treatment sample.
I used this at night and the results were excellent, I loved it.
  • Herbivore pineapple gemstone glow mask sample.
This was good but I still prefer the Rodial vit c mask.
  • Vichy Idealia Skin Sleep sample.
I had to bin this, in itself it wasn't too bad on my skin but I think I had a reaction to it because I woke up the next morning to find my eyes were very sore and puffy.
  • Dove advanced hair series oxygen moisture shampoo.
Another nearly empty courtesy of the DDs, it was ok. I quite liked it.
  • Superdrug Argan Hair Therapy weightless conditioner.
This is good and I've already ordered some more. I'm using it as my first condition in the condition-wash-condition regime.
  • Bare Minerals skin longevity vital power fusion sample.
Although it didn't say so on the sample bottle this was like a serum. It was ok but I didn't notice any amazing results.
Bunnybobtails · 22/07/2018 22:37

Hi all, I've not posted in ages as I've had issues with my phone, but now back in the land of the living so trying to catch up! I have a new found love......the Neals yards balm. I think it's my favourite thing ever, I'm using it as a Cleanser, eye cream, it's helped my eyebrows grow thicker and it heals the marks left by time-of-the-month spots. Fab stuff. I don't need any kind of night cream after using it, I'm seriously impressed. The downside is that I have lots of odds and sods to use up, and I need to justify the cost of it as it's quite pricey, but I think eBay might be my friend here.

Used up a marine cream tonight, I love the smell of this but I'm not convinced it does anything, so as it was a travel size jar I'll just hang on to it for decanting into. I have binned a couple of old lipsticks, and on a plus point, have realised that as my skin is ok at the mo, I'm not using as much make up concealer as usual, which is a good thing. My make up at the moment is phwoar paint under the eyes, touch of concealer on my chin if it needs it, sweep of powder (No7) then quick dust of blush and a Burts bees tinted lip balm. (Hayfever eyes means no mascara in the summer months for me).

So no real empties here, apart from a hairspray and nearly a Liz Earle hair oil which is my holy grail of hair products and I clearly need to hide from DD who has waist length curly hair and uses way more than my one pump a day!!

Hope you are all well, I'll have a read through when I get five mins Flowers

ThisIsHistory · 23/07/2018 23:34

Hoping to move soon too @ememem84, so clearing the backlog definitely appeals.

Agree everyone needs an outlet @experiment627!

Where you off to on holiday @PurpleNailVarnish? When my rosacea flares up I use Pacifica Transcedent Concentrated Concealer on it and it doesn’t aggravate it (don’t use foundation). That brand might be worth a look? I think using a chemical based sunscreen might be triggering mine now, so I’m about to do an experiment, seeing if a tinted mineral sunscreen works better for me. Have a couple to try. I used a mineral one last year with no rosacea issues, will go back to that one if I don’t like the tinted ones. Will let you know how it goes.

Ebay has been a good friend to me for Oskia Detox masks @Bunnybobtails so good luck with the Neals Yard balm.

Had a big push at the weekend to use up the languishing dregs of a few things, so a few more empties:

Oskia Renaissance Gel Mini- nice to use and pretty colour but quite highly fragranced so irritated my skin a little.

Apivita Aqua Vita Intense Moisturising and Revitalising Serum- really hydrating for skin, great in sunny weather. Already have a spare in the cupboard.

Pukka Rosewater Spray- nice if unremarkable. Won’t buy another as have half a dozen mists to use up.

John Masters Blood Orange and Vanilla Body Milk- lovely scent, pretty good lotion. Might buy again if the fancy takes me.

Fresh Therapies Natural Nail Polish Remover- good, quite expensive but very nourishing and not at all drying. The polish remover wipes in the same range are excellent though thismon’es useful for mistakes on a bud.

Superdrug Foil Wraps for Nails- very good and chip as chips. Have more in the stash already.

IGK Direct Flight dry shampoo mini- didn’t like this either
IGK Jet Lag dry shampoo mini- best of a bad bunch but too expensive for what it is

Alpha-H Liquid Gold- love this, already have another

Barbara Sturm Face Cream samples- too rich for me

That’s all the drinks and drabs used up, might be a while til I finish anything else!

PurpleNailVarnish · 24/07/2018 21:00

Thanks @ThisIsHistory, I've ordered the Pacifica stuff.
Clinique SPF stuff always works for me and doesn't make my rosacea flare up. I haven't found anything else that works.
I've noted what you say about Alpha H, I know it's one of those things that everyone raves about but my lousy skin means I'm wary of anything unless it works for rosacea.

ThisIsHistory · 24/07/2018 21:28

Hello @PurpleNailVarnish

Fingers crossed the Pacifica works!

The Liquid Gold is the first thing I reach for if I get even a hint of a flare- knocks the rosacea right on the head. Have also found that using it regularly means I am less likely to get a flare. Started using it to clear up some scarring from a flare and noticed the effects, then googled it a bit and gave it a go.

But it’s one of those things, glycolic acid, really helps some people with rosacea, aggravates it in others. There have been some studies on it which basically say that- clears it up in some people, makes it worse in others.

Experiment627 · 25/07/2018 06:58

I have an empty!!!!

  • Eva Gonzalez Aguas Frescas Azahar 175ml: I have a general love of Orange Blossom but this is not as nice as the Agua de Naranjos, which I adore, but was a lot cheaper. I bought it when I was over in Spain in January - and Kwicklet came from that trip 😍

Inthetropics · 26/07/2018 06:47

You've all inspired me and i've accepted my friend's invite to the challenge! I really need to save money but can't commit to not buying anything so now she's proposed one year of frugality and this sounds more doable so i've accepted. It starts in august!

@PurpleNailVarnish I'm not sure what car i want. Probably a cheap one. I'm not a car person at all... i have a savings goal and that's it. L'Occitane Au Brésil is great but i don't like the hand creams. Everybody loves them so i'm probably the weird one. I also find the french L'Occitane hand creams slimy.

I have now 250 beauty products. I've made a list of everything and am shocked. My goal now is to greatly diminish my stockpile and go from having 250 products to less than 100. I have 29 soaps, 9 hair masks, 14 shampoos, etc. Ideally i'd like to get to a point where i'm happy having only a few closed products of each item. I won't be limiting the amount i have that's being used as it's never been a problem and it's under control. Will revise this initial goal when i reach it.

PurpleNailVarnish · 26/07/2018 07:36

Urgh. I went back to work on Monday and Tuesday, it's a phased return so I'm off yesterday and today.
I've so much to do but aside from a hospital appointment I spent most of the day asleep and being ill.
I'm so frustrated with myself.
I've got another hospital appointment today and a massive list of pre-holiday stuff to do.

Anyway, that's nothing to do with beauty products.
I've got some empties but I'll list them out before we go away.

@ThisIsHistory thanks for the Pacifica tip, it's arrived and I'll use it tomorrow.
When I first had rosacea I read up on a lot.
I got metronidazole cream then later low dose tablets from my GP but neither did any good.
Then I went down the could this be a bug on your skin route and used loads of medicated stuff. Again, that didn't work.
By a process of trial and error I've managed to get it to usually barely noticeable unless something aggravates it.

I'll try Liquid Gold, if it doesn't work then DD2 will gratefully take it off my hands.

Aw @Experiment627 it's your conception product! Are you about 30 weeks now?

I don't use L'Occitane hand cream @Inthetropics. My Mum does but that's no indication of anything.
Good work on your product list, keep going at it.
I've bought a car. At least, I've paid a deposit and ordered it so that's progress.

LanguidLobster · 26/07/2018 17:19

I used up some pink mud scalp treatment.

I think I'm on course for going the rest of the year without purchasing anything else, might need a bottle of shampoo and eyeliner but that's it.

Inthetropics · 26/07/2018 19:47

I have many ins today. Got two really fancy gift sets from friends as a late birthday gift and bought four Vichy's Normaderm Skin Balance. This is THE holy grail for my skin and the only product i currently use for moisturizing my face; Vichy developed this product specially for brazilian skin. The drugstore was having a massive sale and i bought it with 40% discount. This was never on sale before and it's VERY expensive so i didn't even try to resist. Got nine assorted Vichy samples with my purchase. Had to wait half an hour in line because the drugstore was full.

ememem84 · 26/07/2018 21:29

Clarins day moisturiser finished. Moving on to Clinique.

Inthetropics · 26/07/2018 23:18

Empty: Seaweed hand wash. Love the smell.
