Should I cut my hair into a short bob?

I've loved the look of shorter hair on people lately, and I am toying with the idea of cutting my hair into a short bob. I don't have that long hair at the moment, reaches my collarbone. I love the look of Pandora Sykes' bob, as well as Rosamund Pike's when she had it in the bob style for a film.

Have any of you regretted cutting your hair into a bob, or do you think I should just go for it, it will grow back if I hate it?

God no - the dreaded mumbob! World's most hideous hairstyle!

EmilyC2 · 07/03/2018 08:10

I thought Pandora and Rosamund's looked fashionable....am I very wrong!? 😂

I would like a change though, so please feel free to say any suggestions if you disagree with the bob 😊

Super-sharp glossy bob, very short can look good on some people.

I am not one of them. I had my fine hair cut into a bob once and I've never felt so plain in my life. It just wasn't stylish (even though it was a stylish bob on the models in the pictures) and I felt frumpy and couldn't wait to grow it out.

AbsolutelyCorking · 07/03/2018 08:12

Agree with pp —the Mum bob is ubiquitous, frumpy and ageing.

piratequeenio · 07/03/2018 08:13

The problem is they look fashionable on them, beautifully styled, beautifully made up.

They look like lego hair on ordinary people, generally.

MeetieVonWrinkleSqueak · 07/03/2018 08:15

I think inthedeep is right.

I’ve lost count of the times that I’ve had my hair cut into a shortish bob, but it doesn’t lie smooth and glossy like I want it to/like pictures of models do, and just looks completely crap.

Don’t do it!

EmilyC2 · 07/03/2018 08:15

I love the look of a blunt bob as well, but I'm not sure it would work with my thicker hair. Arghh I definitely don't want lego hair! I'll ask my hairdresser as well what tips she has or style suggestions next time I go in

I had mine cut into what I believe is called a textured graduated bob.
It’s lovely and easy to look after but also looks good. My hair is wavy so unless I want to spend hours with straighteners a bob would be no good anyway.
I in no way resemble a Lego character, which was my fear with a bob

EmilyC2 · 07/03/2018 08:20

So do you think it has to be wavier to look fashionable? I'm dreadful at styling so maybe a bob isn't for me. I also love Jess Woodley's hair (think she used to be on made in Chelsea) when it was in this platinum bob. I thought she looked great, but maybe I'm dreaming of the perfect hairstyle and that won't translate to me 😬

Well I loved my asymmetric bob! I love my new pixie cut even more though. Long (heat-styled) wavy hair is so popular now that a short cut stands out - so it depends whether you think that’s a good thing.

TheNavigator · 07/03/2018 08:27

A well cut bob bob can look a million times better than hair that is juts hanging there, or scraped into a pony tail. A bit asymmetric is fashionable at the moment or as PP said a bit of texture can work if you have think hair. Ignore the doubters, I think it could look amazing and if not, it is an easy style to grow out.

EmilyC2 · 07/03/2018 10:13

Thank you for your opinions and siggestions....I am still really torn between cutting it and leaving it as it is...I'll have to think a bit more before I decide

I think you would have to be prepared to maintain it regularly.

I noticed that in a lot of those bob hairstyle photos on Pinterest, highlights or balayage have been used, to add texture and interest.

A bob + dramatic block colour would also need a lot of maintenance to keep it looking sleek!

SukiTheDog · 07/03/2018 10:56

OP, a bob can look great. I’ve had them when I’ve gone from very short to longer. Sort of a mid-style. Are you brave enough to post a pic?

EmilyC2 · 07/03/2018 11:09

This is a photo from a few months ago
Apolpgies for the terrible quality. I'm not sure I feel my face shape would suit a bob, I feel like the shape is very round

Should I cut my hair into a short bob?

A lot of people are anti bob here 😂 It make sure me even more apprehensive about cutting it, if I do go ahead!

I meant to type, it makes me even more apprehensive...autocorrect 🙄

I have a bob and I love it 😁 Cut blunt to the chin, no layers, with a blunt fringe.

I think hope a fringe on a bob makes it less mumsy...

EmilyC2 · 07/03/2018 11:16

Good to hear something positive, I'm glad you like your bob. I think bobs with fringes look so nice as well, I think I'd get annoyed with a fringe always getting in my eyes although I love how fringes look

isthismylifenow · 07/03/2018 11:17

I have a bob. Its not mumsy at all. In fact, I get so many compliments about my hair. I do have a good hairdresser though, I do think that makes a huge difference. Not every hairdresser cuts well I have found.

My hair is bone straight though, and I find it easy to maintain. Its graduated, with one side slightly longer than the other. And layered (thinned out) as my hair is growing thicker as I get older

I have tried to grow it longer but it just doesn't suit me as much I don't think.

rainingcats · 07/03/2018 11:18

I had my hair cut into a short bob style a few months ago ..... personally I prefer long hair .... but I do think that a short bob looks miles better then long hair just tied up on the top of my head if that makes sense. A good bob cut meant minimal styling time rather then hours of heat styling which it took for my long hair to look good. Go for it - hair always grows back!

newdocket · 07/03/2018 11:21

I recently had my hair cut into a short bob with a fringe and for the first few weeks I looked like a playmobil figure. Honestly, it was awful. It is now - 5 weeks later - marginally less awful but still not great. I do have thick hair though which probably doesn't help. I will NEVER be doing this again!

EmilyC2 · 07/03/2018 11:21

Will my face shape look really really round if I cut it into a bob though?
