Should I cut my hair into a short bob?

I've loved the look of shorter hair on people lately, and I am toying with the idea of cutting my hair into a short bob. I don't have that long hair at the moment, reaches my collarbone. I love the look of Pandora Sykes' bob, as well as Rosamund Pike's when she had it in the bob style for a film.

Have any of you regretted cutting your hair into a bob, or do you think I should just go for it, it will grow back if I hate it?

@expat, love that bob. Not frumpy in any way!

EmilyC2 · 08/03/2018 09:20

Yes, Margot Robbie's bob was gorgeous, then again she'd probably look amazing with any hairstyle. I might go for a longer bob at first, and see how that is. Then I'll make the decision go any shorter

It’s what we all dread @TheNaze73 😁

myusernamewastakenbyme · 08/03/2018 15:34

Mine looks like that if left to dry naturallyGrin

Another one wanting to take the bob plunge here! I have very fine, mousy hair, just below shoulder length. I was thinking of a longish, layered bob. I know mine would look much better with some highlights, but I'm not going down that expensive road!

I don't buy the mum-bob thing. A style that looks chic on Katie Holmes might well look mumsy on a 47 year-old mum in a fleece on a muddy dog-walk (i.e. me). I am under no illusions that any haircut is going to make me look über glamorous!

Are layers inadvisable on fine hair? I've had several straight cut, no-layers bob s in the past but fancy something different.

Eolian · 08/03/2018 16:23

Meant to say, my hair is poker-straight too.

DavetheCat2001 · 08/03/2018 16:43

I had a longish bob about a year ago..I really liked it.

I'm growing it now, but would probably go back to it if I fancied a change.

Blueberryblueberry · 08/03/2018 17:42

Got for it, I've got a bob and it's great
Had a lob first - so it wasn't a drastic change and I could tie/clip it up if needed and it would grow out quickly- but have got gradually shorter. My hair's thickish and wavy when long- tends to go a bit mumbob if left to dry on its on but if I run the straighteners over it's fine. Told the hairdresser I didn't want a mumbob or Lego hair!! I don't imagine I look like a pintest lovely who's 19 but it probably looks better than a messy bun scraped off my face...

Blueberryblueberry · 08/03/2018 17:44

Am also finding the bob-hating a bit weird?? On every other thread asking what to do with long hair, mumsnet tend to always advise long wavy messy bob!

spiney · 08/03/2018 20:38

Love bobs. Probably had a version of it since I was 4. My hair is dead straight, fine and there is a lot of it. And the cut suits my hair. I've had long, short, side parting, middle parting, fringe, highlights, bayalage.

It is simple haircut so you have to keep it maintained to look good.

I think it goes well with most clothes and is simple enough to look casual but also professional if necessary.

I spose I could feel a bit cowed by the whole mum bob hair of doom thing earlier but I get loads of compliments about my hair.

In RL it's a versatile haircut.

If you need a refresh OP what about A long bob to change things up a bit. Not too much commitment but could put a spring in your step. Also with a very simple cut I would think of making the colour count also.

SukiTheDog · 08/03/2018 22:19

Nice colour @Dave

I have a bob - a bit like suki's second pic.

I have very fashionable colour too which changes frequently. I'm currently silver but think I might get some holographic highlights out back in as the blue helps the silver stay silver as it washes out.

In no way does it look like a "mumbob". I get asked all the time for my stylists details and I
Ronivally despite now being fully grey (silver!!!) I know I look much younger than when I had ubiquitous brown with blond highlights to camouflage the incoming grey.

I like it - easy to look after - but I have naturally straight hair. It just needs cut regularly but I have to go every 6-7 weeks to maintain my colour anyway.

AdiosPeaceOfRoast · 09/03/2018 07:25

I tend to think of long hair as the ‘mum hair’ now as it’s so ubiquitous. When I have mine long I tend to feel weighed down by it, it’s a bit of a drab security blanket for me.

There’s so many variations on a bob anyway - it’s basically hair that’s not super short or long?

Eolian · 09/03/2018 20:43

Had mine done today! Shorter at the back with some layering, longer at the front. Just for fun, she put some messy waves in with curling tongs, which was a total revelation! I've never had so much as a kink in my hair since a disastrous perm in the 80s! Off to look at curling tongs in Amazon...

TheFairyCaravan · 10/03/2018 18:15

I had mine done yesterday. It feels so much better and looks a lot healthier. DH keeps saying “your hair does look nice you know!”

MidnightVelvetthe7th · 10/03/2018 18:23

There's an app you can download on your phone where you take a pic & try on loads of hairstyles. I played with it for ages :)

SukiTheDog · 10/03/2018 19:25

Can we see the cuts? 😊

DottyDotts · 10/03/2018 21:43

Ooo yes Eolian and TheFairy can we see your haircuts please....I love bobs

DragonNoodleCake · 10/03/2018 21:44
