Should I cut my hair into a short bob?

I've loved the look of shorter hair on people lately, and I am toying with the idea of cutting my hair into a short bob. I don't have that long hair at the moment, reaches my collarbone. I love the look of Pandora Sykes' bob, as well as Rosamund Pike's when she had it in the bob style for a film.

Have any of you regretted cutting your hair into a bob, or do you think I should just go for it, it will grow back if I hate it?

Suki your hair looks lovely in both those photos. To be honest, I don't get the 'mumbob' snark. It is better than 'mumlonghairscrapedbackintoaponytail' in my opinion. Bobs can look lovely and stylish and youthful.

MadisonAvenue · 07/03/2018 12:52

Lifeaback that's the sort of length I want mine cutting to this weekend. I've been growing out a pixie cut for over two years and my hair is now past shoulder length but I don't think it suits me at this length.

EmilyC2 · 07/03/2018 12:54

@SukiTheDog I love your hair, especially the second photo. That is basically what I was hoping mine would look like if I cut it. Did it require a lot of maintenance, e.g hair straightening? How often did you go to the hairdressers to keep it at that length? One problem I have is my hair always falls into my eyes...I want to wear it down if I have a bob but I feel i'd get too annoyed and I'd clip it back or something and it would look awful!

Just read your second post Suki, why don't you cut it back into a bob? It looks so lovely, I'm envious :)

I have a bob like @Suki's second picture. I love it. It looks sleek when I blow dry it. I hate having long hair though and just find it a real pain. i"m not particularly bothered by the Mumbob tag. loads of the trendies on instagram have bobs though so it can't be that frumpy! maybe i am just deluding myself.

EmilyC2 · 07/03/2018 13:08

No, i think the bob looks trendy, that's why I'm considering it! Again, does your bob require a lot of upkeep?

I’d talk to your stylist about your hair type, and how much styling you’re willing to do. There are bobs and there are bobs. If you anticipate air drying then tell them it needs to look ok without blow drying. Long angled bobs with blunt cut add weight to my fine, slightly wavy hair but also work if I just leave unstyled. I’m only recently a mum, but i have a bob. It’s a purple bob, mind.

EmilyC2 · 07/03/2018 13:18

I'd be willing to put the effort in if I could get it looking like Suki's everyday...I guess straightening won't take that long, especially if hair is short

I like things like this, long bobs.

I think you need the right texture/bounce in your hair to pull of bobs. Fine, straight hair can look great but only on very select people ime.

SukiTheDog · 07/03/2018 13:21

O0, depending on your hair type, if you get someone who cuts well, you won’t need to do anything with it. Mine was wash and go. Now, on a cold day, I have to rough dry it with my son’s hairdryer and it’s a real faff. Long hair isn’t always easier!

EmilyC2 · 07/03/2018 13:25

Really Suki? I'm even more jealous now that your hair is naturally like that. My hair (it looks alright in the picture) has the tendency to go wild at times and I know if it was cut shorter that I would need to do some styling. For some reason (I have a side part), one side of the parting remains straight and needs nothing doing to it, the other side goes absolutely crazy sometimes!
To be honest, I was thinking of changing hairdressers. My hairdresser at the moment is getting quite complacent I think. I've left with wonky hair before which would not be ideal, and would be extremely noticeable on shorter hair. I just don't know where else to go, as the salon I go to is rated the best in the area.

I cut my super long hair into a long bob - hits collar bone. Took ten years off me and I have it wavy, textured and messy, sleek with side partings - basically I do a lot more with it and it gets many compliments

InglouriousBasterd · 07/03/2018 13:37

Oh - practically identical to alpine's picture!

Hoppinggreen · 07/03/2018 14:09

Mine is like the picture iamscarface posted but a bit shorter
It’s longer at the front and then swings above my collar at the back
I absolutely love it and I’ve had so many compliments

yakari · 07/03/2018 14:19

I think with hair you get what you pay for, I had years of being 'meh' about my hair. Then treated my self to a much more expensive hair dresser. The cut and colour is on a different level, and actually so good I can leave it longer so I'm pretty sure annually it works out kind of the same.
If you cut it then look for local recommendations. I got mine because 80% of face book posts asking for hairdressers recommended them - the other 20% said good but expensive.
Mines currently sort of Meg Ryan in the 80s - choppy bob behind the ears with really good colouring. Taken years off me and perfectly match to my hair so easy to maintain. But a lot of that comes from a hairdresser who knew how to cut to suit me, no just how to cut that style

EmilyC2 · 07/03/2018 14:22

The thing is, I am paying a lot for the haircut and as I said previously, the salon has won national awards and was voted the best in the county. The stylist I have there is one of the more expensive ones as well, so I don't really feel like I'm getting value for money. I'll have a google

yakari · 07/03/2018 14:28

Mine has purple hair and tattoos- I'd guess pushing 50. I'm pretty sure she'd never give me a mumbob Grin
I do hope you find someone - I found chopping my hair off gave me such a new lease on life. I have never regretted it.

yakari · 07/03/2018 14:31

Just one other thing, maybe google recommendation for 'make over' as opposed to hair dresser. That's how I found mine.

EmilyC2 · 07/03/2018 14:41

Wow your hairdresser sounds fab! Thanks for the tip, I'll get googling this evening

You always want the opposite to what you’ve got! I’ve poker straight hair 😊. Yes, OP, am thinking about it but....won’t be able to tie it up. I just feel as bit old for one length straight hair now, though it’s in pretty good condition.

Long and feeling a bit shapeless now.... this was December so, longer now. OP, I usually had it trimmed 6-8 weeks apart. Which was one of the reasons I grew it to save funds!

Can anyone link to a 'mumbob'. What is it actually?

Sallystyle · 07/03/2018 15:37

I had a bob done last week. I have very thick hair. It's slightly graduated, no layers and a thick full fringe.

I do not look like a lego man and it is not frumpy.

ABuckToothedGirlinLuxembourg · 07/03/2018 15:39

Yes! I love a blunt cut bob.

Systemoverload99 · 07/03/2018 16:40

I'm now wondering what to do with my hair as it's currently in a graduated bob. I tried growing it but it's so frizzy it's a nightmare and just sticks out. It isn't curly enough to be curly either.
I'm now feeling depressed and frumpy reading about the mumbob of doom!

Systemoverload99 · 07/03/2018 16:44

I was planning on something like this when I next have a haircut
