Should I cut my hair into a short bob?

I've loved the look of shorter hair on people lately, and I am toying with the idea of cutting my hair into a short bob. I don't have that long hair at the moment, reaches my collarbone. I love the look of Pandora Sykes' bob, as well as Rosamund Pike's when she had it in the bob style for a film.

Have any of you regretted cutting your hair into a bob, or do you think I should just go for it, it will grow back if I hate it?

I think I am going to bite the bullet and cut it. Despite what a lot of posters were saying about the "mum-bob", I really like the look of the examples here that people have posted. It will grow back quickly if I really, really hate it

I’m getting mine cut into a bob on Friday. It was meant to have happened last week but we were snowed in.

I’ve had a bob on many an occasion over the last 30 years and it does suit me. My hair is fine and atm it just sort of hangs there. It seems to be thinning a bit, too, so I’m hoping a shorter bob will make it look a bit thicker.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 07/03/2018 18:02

EmilyC2, your hair is such a lovely colour, is it natural ?
I also love the pic of @SukiTheDog, her bob cut looks fantastic.
Bobs can be frumpy, but they can also be very stylish and cool, if you get a great cutter.
I say go for it, but keep your colour. Come back and show us.😄

EmilyC2 · 07/03/2018 18:14

Yes my colour is natural, although it looks a tad darker in that photo that it is!

Up until 2 weeks ago my hair was long to the back bra strap, with some layers but basically just hanging about, the ends were getting a bit dry and over processed. It is thick and straight.
I took the plunge and got it cut straight across at just above shoulder height and a fringe. it had a few long layers left in it, I love it and have had loads of compliments. I'm careful not to blow dry the mushroom shape into it. So it is straight and textured and very shiny.

MaureenNervosa · 07/03/2018 19:07

How do you avoid blow drying a mushroom shape? Mine still goes into a mushroom shape at shoulder length. Blush It is very fine on top, so perhaps that is why.

SukiTheDog · 07/03/2018 19:16

@Keia, love your cut. What’s changed recently?

SukiTheDog · 07/03/2018 19:17

Sorry, meant @Keira

TheNaze73 · 07/03/2018 19:20

You have lovely hair as it is OP.

keiratwiceknightly · 07/03/2018 19:43

Thanks. I suspect I will go back to it again in a few years but I'm bored so am growing it a bit now. Won't go beyond shoulder length as it gets too heavy and swamps my face.

SukiTheDog · 07/03/2018 19:51

@Emily, can I suggest Vidal Sassoon, if you’re near a salon. Seriously, they know every variation of the bob. It’s crucial you take pictures of what you want and if you get what you want on that first cut, it’ll work for you and will be easier to maintain. Tell them exactly what you’re prepared to do with it (me....nowt 😊).

Here’s a few I’m looking at...

Maureen
I use a flat paddle shape brush, not circular. And don't pull your hair out a right angles to the head, pull it straight downwards gently and slowly.

SmallBlondeMama · 07/03/2018 20:05

Go for it! It will always grow back :)

NamedyChangedy · 07/03/2018 21:00

One of the mums at school has a very sharp bob, either bright red or purple. It looks absolutely amazing on her, not frumpy at all. But it must take a lot of upkeep, now I think about it - she always looks perfect.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 07/03/2018 21:06

Do it, a blunt, messy bob is cool. Long and highlighted - now that's mum-hair!

MaureenNervosa · 07/03/2018 21:43

Ah thank you Bejazzled! plans trip to town to buy a big paddle brush😁

Labradoodliedoodoo · 07/03/2018 21:52

I think you’ll look good with a on trend bob

expatmigrant · 07/03/2018 21:55

I recently cut my shoulder length hair into a shorter bob, like this one. This is a photo of a fashion blogger. Bobs do not need to look like mumbobs, it's all in the styling. My hair is slightly wavy so i need to give it a strong blow dry or put the straighteners over.

OldJoseph · 07/03/2018 22:01

I'd also like to know what a mumbob is?

BakedBeeeen · 07/03/2018 22:13

I have never heard of a mumbob either! Please someone post a pic!

Farfel · 07/03/2018 22:44

Your hair is lovely, and a great colour too. First thing came to mind is Katie Holmes' bob - she went from nice looking to beautiful, and very very stylish - but she did have it cut with a fringe, which is a bit of a hassle maybe.

Farfel · 07/03/2018 22:46

(doublechecks to see if I wrote Holmes and not Hopkins) Grin

EmilyC2 · 08/03/2018 07:39

Thanks for th suggestions, I'll have a look! Haha Katie Hopkins 😂 Nope, wouldn't aspire to be like her!!!

There's thousands of variations of a bob so saying that a bob is mumsy is just fucking ridiculous (hate that word anyway). I hate the way women are all just expected to have long hair these days, it's so boring!
Loved margot robbies bob at the Oscars and really like the wavy bobs, like Jennifer Lawrence has hers quite a bit.
