Thread 11

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

FEBRUARY 2018: The month of February sucks. Period. We’re sick of winter and the state of our finances, some are embracing frugality (in different shapes and forms) but water bills and car maintenance are ruining our buzz. Hair appointments need to be made despite the palpitations of fear that the mere thought incites. Oh, and skin texture. As you were...

Yes it's definitely Nicola who did the QVC stuff for NIOD.

Tantpoke · 06/03/2018 23:47

enid yes I'm planning to start just on my cheeks for now once it arrives. I'll take some photos if I can.

I think even derma rolling without applying products after is meant to be beneficial from a resurfacing point of view.

I've watched a few videos and it looks fairly simple

Tantpoke · 06/03/2018 23:56

sallie it was an enthusiastic Nicola in fact on QVC who persuaded me that the thinner than water CAIS serum was better at penetrating skin, I'm a sucker for marketing Wink
Sad he got rid of her I really liked her.

mintmagnummm · 07/03/2018 04:03

Sallie have you tried the Vichy mineral 89 ha serum?

It's 4.02am and I can't sleep! Im poorly again with a chest infection 😩

Lonesurvivor · 07/03/2018 08:11

SallieSallow Cerave is already in Boots, I saw it at the weekend in Ireland and it's on the UK site now.
They keep it with the pharmacy skin care ranges.

Pupsiecola · 07/03/2018 08:40

DH WhatsApped me from NY in the queue at Sephora to ask if I wanted two DE Hydras or one 😀

botemp · 07/03/2018 08:54

Tant, I do hope you got an appropriate length dermaroller, the longer lengths really shouldn't be used at home. You also have to be really careful what you put on after as most OTC cosmetics are not designed for deep penetration, specifically preservatives. As an aside, dermarolling doesn't have much evidence behind it, it will help accelerate healing of acne scars but only certain types and only the type that would have healed on its own anyhow.

Are they selling the Cerave PM lotion in Boots as well? I saw a preview eith a comprehensive overview on some blog linked somewhere and it was noticeably absent which struck me as odd.

www.boots.com/cerave/cerave-full-range-
That link should bring up all Cerave products Boots will stock.

My local store just had one moisturiser and cleanser.
I saw hylauronic acid listed in ingredients and I think I read here niacinamide, what else good does it contain?
Do people with all skin types use it or just those with sensitive skin?

Lonesurvivor · 07/03/2018 09:37

pupsie your dh is a keeperSmile

Pupsiecola · 07/03/2018 10:20

He is Lone. I dind't want to be greedy so just asked for one.

I've just realised why I've got a sore, aggravated left side of my nose. I tried the PC retinol on Saturday night. The tiniest bit, mixed in with moisturiser.

It's made me realise just how well behaved my skin is these days, and what a relief that is, literally and from a general wellbeing pov. I don't know what to do. I've been fine with LRP Redermic 3 times a week, so should I just stick with that? Or should I suck it up and continue with sth stronger (not necessarily PC, but sth in between the two). Will the pay off be worth it? Any words of wisdom ladies?

SophieLion · 07/03/2018 12:20

I really don't have anything to add to the TO discussion as the only TO product I have ever owned is the retinoid 2% in squalene (and I've not started using it yet - Sunday is the day!!).

From all the posts I am reading though, I get quite conflicting views about TO. Reasonable prices, wide range of products targeted to specific needs and people who are dedicated TO users but also many products that are don't seem to do much or are sticky and no guarantees that two bottles of the same product will be identical. Seems quite a mixed bag..... I wonder about the future of the company.

Hope everyone who is ill feels better soon Flowers and that the weather has improved for you. It's actually a lovely Spring day here Smile

yongnian · 07/03/2018 14:41

mint PM me your address and I’ll send it over Wink sorry to hear about your chest infection, I’ve got a terrible cough at the mo too which came complete with a nice fever too..Flowers

mintmagnummm · 07/03/2018 15:13

Yong thanks so much but I just checked ingredients on the website and it contains the cylo whatever silicone which is one I know my skin dislikes so don't want to risk it :-(. Thanks again though. Thanks

yongnian · 07/03/2018 18:35

Ah no worries, perhaps that’s what gives me problems with it too.

mintmagnummm · 07/03/2018 19:15

Yes it could well be! Although as you know I've had problems with the one I've got too! Your welcome to have it if you like?

SallieSallow · 07/03/2018 19:40

Looks like no cerave night cream or lotion in boots Sad hopefully they'll expand the range soon.

Mint I've not tried that Vichy 89 serum but I didn't care for the Vichy Vit c serum so not that keen to try another one of theirs. I think I'll try the pestle and mortar HA from QVC as can return if I don't like it. But I'll keep going with the Skinpep for now, I may be blaming it unfairly for my skin playing up as there are a lot of other things in the mix to blame as well Smile

Hope you feel better soon Flowers and you too Yong Flowers I'm still lurgified but I sound worse than I feel now so hopefully it's on the way out.

Sophie TO is a very mixed bag, some people seem to love it but I'm just not convinced about the integrity or longevity of their ingredients. And yes lots of strange textures and stickiness. See how you get on with the ret and squalane but I wouldn't add anything else from the range right now, it's easy to get carried away as the stuff is so cheap. I don't think they'll go out of business, I think they'll open more stores and focus on direct selling in stores or via their own website. But who knows, as not sure if bricks and mortar stores are viable business model anymore, so maybe they'll implode or get taken over completely by Estée Lauder.

Twoo · 07/03/2018 20:30

Hello you’ll. Phew. This one thread took some reading .... you ladies are defo on it with your skin care. I’m still trying to understand it all.

I need to start small, perhaps try a new cleanser. I’m in my 50’s. Not overly sundamaged but have lost volume and tone. Also little bumps under skin here and there. Can any of you Skinesta’s advise please?

botemp · 07/03/2018 20:52

I just saw on the skincare addiction UK Reddit (was lurking to see if there was any further Deciem drama news) and there was a PSA that Cerave confirmed on Facebook that the Cerave PM would be in stores late March/early April in Boots but the formulation is slightly different to the US one (no parabens).

Flowers to everyone still feeling ill. I feel kind of bad owning up that I seem to have recovered from the mega fatigue so worst case scenario seems off the table for now and I'm super thankful for proper functioning brain speed again. Enid was your hair appointment tomorrow or have I made that up? Sending good hair vibes, still very happy after washing it myself and have vowed not to leave it this long again.

I think the love for the ordinary has more to do with price point than amazing products. It feeds into the narrative that it's all a scam (it is in a lot of cases but not in all cases) and this is just as good. It's also used by people who haven't tried any sort of active skincare before so if they're seeing amazing instant results, especially in things like the Retinols, it says more about what they were using before than about TO. Anyhow, I've pissed vinegar all over them often enough, they appear to be their own worst enemy at the moment, that will really determine the longevity of the brand from this point on.

Twoo, are you dry skinned? Are you removing makeup or just sunscreen? I briefly thought Skinesta's was some new brand or disease...

BO it's just a short length one 0.25mm so it doesnt completely pierce your skin as such just reddens it for a couple of hours. I'm just going to use it on a small area of my cheeks. Its also meant to boost collagen.

I watched Nadine Baggott derma roll last night on youtube, I really like watching her videos actually, she's very engaging. Her retinol one was also good

I need to buy some alcohol stuff to disinfect the roller with after washing it.

Tantpoke · 07/03/2018 21:13

pupsie Nadine Baggott on retinol

botemp · 07/03/2018 21:25

I can't warm to NB for reasons I don't quite know. Perhaps I'm too much of a know it all myself Wink

I've been loosely following this dermatologist from Australia for a bit. His channel started out as a sort of Dr. pimple popper channel then sort of morphed into quite interesting laser procedures demos (his speciality). He lacks the stringent and more cautious approach so familiar in Dr Sam and Dr Dray which is well, interesting, but he's not a medical dermatologist but a laser dermatologist (seems to be a point of differentiation in training in Australia) and praises procedures like coolscultping (one of his clinic's biggest earners) when I thought it had been written off as bollocks by most. Anyhow, have yet to make up my mind about him as a a whole but this dermaroller video is a good one I feel as it's honest about what is achievable and how to use it (and that dermarollers are single use devices, rarely does that get mentioned).

I'm a wimp & think the derma rollers look scary Blush

Hello Twoo I also thought skinesta was a new skincare brand Smile loss of volume and tone (aka sagging jowls in my case) is an issue for me too, but I don't think there are any lotions and potions that can reverse that unfortunately. I think we'd need to know more about the little bumps and also your skin type to recommend something to help with that.

botemp · 07/03/2018 21:28

Pupsie, WRT to Retinol I think I've mentioned before that it's tougher with rosacea but in general the best retinol to use for everyone is the one you tolerate best, the research has always supported low dosage over prolonged periods of time for anti-ageing, that tolerable dose will be different for everyone. The PC one is known as a hardcore one so it may just be your best fit.

bo Yes tomorrow. Pray to the hair gods for me. I'm having a very bad health week too. Always flare up around period time. So hopefully they won't be too chatty. It's a long appointment.
