Thread 11

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

FEBRUARY 2018: The month of February sucks. Period. We’re sick of winter and the state of our finances, some are embracing frugality (in different shapes and forms) but water bills and car maintenance are ruining our buzz. Hair appointments need to be made despite the palpitations of fear that the mere thought incites. Oh, and skin texture. As you were...

Very glad you're feeling better btw. Brew

Pupsiecola · 07/03/2018 21:51

Thanks guys. I think I will stick with the Redermic. Maube step up to alternate nights. The itching has driven me a bit mad today,, plus I've laid off bit C for a couple days and my skin likes the DE bit C and I don't want to have to cut back on that on a regular basis.

Will also watch that ND video thank you. Although I too don't find her comfortable to watch for some reason!

Pupsiecola · 07/03/2018 21:52

Sorry for the typos. And sorry so many are feeling poorly.

I'm due to find out tmrw if my dad has a brain tumour. It's difficult. We have been estranged for 3 years.

botemp · 07/03/2018 21:58

Flowers Pupsie, that's tough just to deal with on its own, the strained relationship on top definitely doesn't make it any easier. Best of luck tomorrow, hope you have someone nearby with DH away.

I'll pray to the hair gods for you Enid, considering my recent sacrifice surely they must be listening, hope health gets better soon for you too.

Tantpoke · 08/03/2018 00:13

Fab all done :) Be interesting to see how my skin reacts to it, I'll keep you updated.

Have fun in Prague, I loved it there, it's gorgeous.

mintmagnummm · 08/03/2018 06:36

Am I missing out by not having a retinol for my skin 🤔 bo my skin boss what are your thoughts?

mintmagnummm · 08/03/2018 06:36

Pupsie 💐** thinking of you and pray it's not bad news.

SophieLion · 08/03/2018 09:51

That sounds like a difficult situation Pupsie. Sending you a hug ❤️🌸

Just watched that video about retinols. On one hand she really sells the tretinoin product (the prescription only one) but then the side effects sound ShockShock I will start my TO retinoid 2% and see how I go. Not expecting it to do much to be honest after everything I've read on this thread!

Hope the hair is looking gorgeous Enid.

Forgot who is going to Prague but enjoy!!!

SophieLion · 08/03/2018 10:07

Just watched the derma-rolling. Wouldn't fancy doing that myself!!

Tsmummy08 · 08/03/2018 10:53

Pupsie Flowers hoping it's a positive outcome... and that you can enjoy your break xx

Enid libations to Sif the Norse hair goddess on your behalf :)

I finally read through 8 pages last night - am I the only one who makes notes when catching up?!

Miffy I was going to say don't get the DE Umbra sunscreen but obvs too late!! And yes I started using the Active Formulas vit C a couple of years ago maybe? It's good but the formula isn't as "nice" as DE or SC. But for the price point it's excellent.

Sophie see above re. AF vit C compared to DE and SC, and out of those two I prefer the DE as it seems more stable and doesn't go off so quickly, possibly due to the packaging.

Tant So glad you didn't get the 1% Retin-A - I've been using Retin-A for a year now and OTC retinols for years before that and I've found the 1% too hardcore for me. I'm very happy with the 0.05% and will stick with that for the foreseeable. Oooh and dermarollers! I bought one a couple of years ago and used it a few times, one of the shorter-needled ones. Let us know how you get on - I didn't feel like it was doing much but probably didn't do it long enough to see results!!

JDSTER · 08/03/2018 11:09

tsmummy I make notes too. Not as comprehensive as who is using what and it’s literally a few notes I keep in my Filofax so I don’t lose them. How is your skin day to day? Do you still get dry with using Retin A?

I using differin most nights now- I’d say 6 out of 7. Retinization apparant with flaky skin but my skin is definitely clearer this last month. I was quite flaky earlier in the week but better today. Skin is definitely clearer and less SFs on nose. A combination of not using primer, ELDW and using Differin is working well.

Bo how is medik 8 retinoid working out in these early days of trialling it?

Enid good luck with the hair.

I’m heading to London just now and have a free afternoon for shopping- 😀

Tantpoke · 08/03/2018 11:09

The video Bo linked to was for a slightly longer roller than mine 0.5 so I am also a bit Shock at the bleeding. Mine at 0.25 shouldnt cause any bleeding and if it does I will stop.

My only concerns are hygiene although I will be scrupulous re cleaning it before and after use, although I will not be wiping my face with hibiscrub prior to use as per his recommendation. I might use lactic acid though as per Teresa Tarmey I have a bottle of the TO stuff I rarely use.
It is to use on very faint old old acne scars which are the only thing right now left to deal with.

I havent the time or energy to go to a professional and just want to try this avenue first at home and see if it does anything at all.

tsmummy I've been looking at the AF site with a lot of interest but just a bit hesitant about concocting my own stuff. I'm also a bit annoyed that the tabs for use and ingredients don't work so I can't read up about their products in depth and how exactly to use them.

Tantpoke · 08/03/2018 11:10

JDSTER let us know what you buy Smile

Tantpoke · 08/03/2018 11:13

Got to love Trinny in this video on derma rolling with 0.25 - 0.3 needle length Grin

JDSTER · 08/03/2018 11:15

Tant would you not use hibiscrub? It is a good antimicrobial and would remove any surface bacteria prior to the derma roller, thus preventing any potential infection risk.

JDSTER · 08/03/2018 11:17

Tant I think that Trinny vid would scare me Grin. Yes I’ll let you know if I buy anything Smile

Tantpoke · 08/03/2018 11:23

jdster from an infection control point of view a decent cleanse with a facewash will remove all the transient bacteria I need to get rid of and keep my own resident bacteria. If I was piercing the skin then yes I might consider using it but then only in an environment that wasnt my own home, so I get why he needs to be more stringent from his professional stand point.
