Welcome to the long running perfume thread. Discuss Scent of the Day, fave dupes and scents of ALL price brackets. You don’t have to spend a fortune and we will encourage you to get a sample first. That said, hiding your credit card in the freezer is recommended.

Old thread

We also have managed to get a 20% discount on a Perfume Society box and are discussing it on The Big Sniff.

I concur on both counts
Cumberbatch looks like a myopic weasel

MrsGruber · 21/02/2018 21:31

That is about the measure of it Mother.

EliseC1965 · 21/02/2018 21:40

Sigh. I’m so in love and I may have to raid my holiday funds. I had an hour between uni and work and popped into Selfridges to try Misia on my skin. Heavenly violets, rose, tonka (I think) and a wee touch of leather at the end. Still there faintly now after 10 hours.
Think it may be too steep for a birthday present from oh, as it’s not a big one this year. But I need this loveliness in my life. Flowers

Big sigh.

explodingkittens · 21/02/2018 21:43

Oh lord floofy, sending [flowers} and moggy-finding vibes your way.

mrsreynolds · 21/02/2018 21:44

Hope puss cat turns up floofy x

BluebellGal · 21/02/2018 22:00

Good luck floofy hope your Cat returns soon and hope your meeting goes well and you get the outcome you need.

GrinGrin at the suggestion of Piam being our vintage agent as the same thought ran through my head. I too am a bit Hmm at Matt Smith but actually he does do quite a convincing turn at the DoE. All characters are brilliant and annoying at times - they are of their time and the way they talk/act is pretty jarring to our modern sensibilities. No way the modern royals could/would act like that!

Misia sounds lovely

BluebellGal · 21/02/2018 22:04

I’ve LOVED being a Sex Goddess today Grin She is most certainly welcome in my house!

I’m now in MrsGrubers favourite The Great Randello. Giving it another go after a dislike on first try (Blushsorry). I can also appreciate Jasmine et cigarette- it’s definitely a clever concoction and totally respect that even if it’s not for me.

positivepineapple · 21/02/2018 22:11

Floofy - sending lots of positive thoughts, one of my moggs went missing for 24 hours and I was a wreck. He was locked in next doors house with the female from 2 doors down 😳

MrsGruber · 21/02/2018 22:35

I think it's that whole image of having afternoon tea at Liberty's, in Edwardian times, complete with cigar smoke and a heavily laden dessert trolley. Bit surprised to see this listed as a fruity chypre.

MrsGruber · 21/02/2018 22:47

Quick question: has anyone else's inbox and sent items gone haywire today? It looks like I've sent lots of messages to the wrong people here (addressee and name in first line of message don't match). The extent of this makes me wonder if its some kind of system glitch rather than an epic personal fail? So I'm not sure whether anything has actually gone astray? If you have received any rogue stuff from me, would you let me know, please (and apologies)? It's making it rather difficult to see who I should being send what to Confused.

BluebellGal · 21/02/2018 23:01

mrsgruber I’m waiting for a reply from you with your address so I can send your stash :)

Motoko · 21/02/2018 23:09

Floofy sending positive perfumed vibes, hoping your kitteh comes back soon, and your meeting goes well.

EnidButton · 22/02/2018 00:47

Hello 👋🏻I'm doing a bit of lurking but have no idea where to start perfume wise so hope you don't mind me tagging along and learning from you all. Don't know any of the proper descriptive terms or abbreviations yet so apologies. (and I really like Matt Smith Grin)

I have a ridiculously sensitive sense of smell so feel I should put it to good use by expanding my perfume horizons and learning more about the different notes and things. Is there somewhere I should go to get the basics?

Currently wearing Chanel Mademoiselle which I love. Previous favourites have been Chanel Chance (the original one) and SJP lovely although I don't think I'd like that now.

I love vanilla, frangipani, Tonka bean, violet and rose. Dislike musk but don't mind a bit of leather.

Interesting in Valentino Donna but can't seem to find anywhere with a sample. Sprayed it months ago and really loved how it faded (??) down to a quite old fashioned powdery but sexy scent.

Also looking for a Parma violet scent that's more sweet than green if that makes sense. Something warm and powdery. If anyone has any suggestions?

Love the sound of the Misia Elise

Floofy Flowers I hope your cat comes home soon.

Ollivander84 · 22/02/2018 00:48

Enid 👋🏻

EnidButton · 22/02/2018 00:52

If you can't be a Good Example, you can at least be a Terrible Warning

I love this.

EnidButton · 22/02/2018 00:53

Hi Olli! Grin

Ollivander84 · 22/02/2018 00:58

Here is my terrible warning for Enid to step away Grin
I'm not including samples or 9ml bottles 😂😂

That's just luring me in more Olli Grin Especially the names of them. What a lovely looking shelf!

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 22/02/2018 04:52

PIAM what a haul!!

Hi Enid! I love a violet too. Misia is lovely - I got a sample from eBay which can be handy if you're not near a store carrying Les Exclusifs.

Insolence is a punchy violet on me too and although the range of Guerlains in dept stores is usually awful if you're near a House of Fraser they'll probably have some. If you're lucky the may also carry Vol De Nuit which I'm rather in love with, altough some Fragrantica reviews do have this as a bit green.

You might also be interested in the Violet sample pack from Bloom- I've been trying one scent from it every week. The FBs (full bottles) are often expensive but it's still a lovely way to try some different scents. My favourite so far has been Olfactive Studios Chambre Noir which starts off with Tobacco/Leather before the Violet kicks in.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 22/02/2018 06:44

The violettiest violet I've ever smelled is Apres l'Ondee.

MrsGruber · 22/02/2018 07:18

Hi Enid - would recommend 4160s Tarts Knicker Drawer for a vintage parma violet vibe.

A modern purple rather than green violet (but not quite parma violet) that's well worth trying is Girl by Pharrell Williams, made by Comme des Garçons. Really good stuff but being flogged off cheaply.

Bluebell thanks, am on the case...

mrsreynolds · 22/02/2018 07:21

Enid...
Insolence by guerlain is pure Parma violets imo
Apree l'ondee too
I would try a sample set from 4610 too...lots of rose/violet scents and all unusual
Good luck sniffing!

mrsreynolds · 22/02/2018 07:22

I would also try some of the valentinos...

explodingkittens · 22/02/2018 07:24

Welcome Enid. Hide your credit card Wink

Agree about Insolence for a parma violet scent. You might also want to try Feerie by Van Cleef & Arpels - apparently that's a pretty sweet violet, and I believe some of the Marc Jacobs Daisy perfumes are violet-based? There's always good old Yardley Violets or Fragonard Violette (available from M&S) although they might be a bit greener. I love a violet too although tend to prefer a greener version - am still kicking myself for not buying Lush's Kerbside Violet when it was easily available...

Went to bed last night in Creamy Vanilla Crumble and it's still there this morning...yumyumyum.

mrsreynolds · 22/02/2018 07:53

Creamy vanilla crumble sounds amazing kittens 😁

Sotd...hmmm....PP opium again I think.
