Welcome to the long running perfume thread. Discuss Scent of the Day, fave dupes and scents of ALL price brackets. You don’t have to spend a fortune and we will encourage you to get a sample first. That said, hiding your credit card in the freezer is recommended.

Old thread

We also have managed to get a 20% discount on a Perfume Society box and are discussing it on The Big Sniff.

Some of us don't get out much Terriers Smile.

If you are going to try some 4160s samples, definitely try Babylon Sunset (the perfect fruit floral). You might also like Lemon Sherbert (cosy lemon/vanilla/musk), Rhubarb & Citrus cologne (sharp but floral rhubarb), Rosa Ribes (a Ribena chypre), Paris 1948 (a vintage inspired peach/floral chypre). Lots of love here too for The Sexiest Scent (more lemon meringue pie than errr sex though) and Tart's Knicker Drawer for an (untarty) vintage floriental. Tokyo Spring Blossom is a bit overlooked here - but it's another pretty floral you might like to try?

CountFosco · 12/02/2018 19:27

I love fressias (the flowers). I may need to go and try out some of the perfumes!

MotherofTerriers you could get an Atelier Cologne discovery set if you like citrus. They cost €30 and have 2ml samples of their entire perfume range so 30 odd samples. You also get a €30 discount voucher that you can use towards buying a bottle once you've identified your favourite. I used my box as an advent calendar and had a very enjoyable December. My favourite to my surprise was Mistral Patchouli (not very citrussy admittedly, a floriental but lightened by the citrus) but I also loved Polemo Paradis (like honey on pink grapefruit) and Vetiver Fatal (I love green frags).

CountFosco · 12/02/2018 19:29

Sunshine and Pancakes is a good 4160 to try as well, starts lemony then develops into a warm skin scent.

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 12/02/2018 19:32

MrsR not sure if that's a typo or not but either way No Malone is the best name for JM dupes!

Will have to list my swaps but I have a lot of Atelier Colognes I can swap Grin

Also on the swap list will be Chanel 18 sample. My skin devours most scents at the best of times and this one seems to be considered as a bit of a skin scent so it never really stood a chance did it? Was SotD and I did get an interesting ginger ale opening and skin scent stage was nice but it lasted about an hour. Ah well. Switched to MMM Beach Walk from the Feel Unique pick and mix. Nice- more moisturiser/light sum cream that salty beach air but a pleasant fresh clean smell.

JanetStWalker · 12/02/2018 19:33

Get out now while you can, Terriers, your purse will thank you for it. Grin

What flavour terriers are you mum to?

MrsPestilence · 12/02/2018 19:53

Terriers when I fancy something completely different I go to Roullier White and get a few samples, so with figs in mind as a theme consider samples of these (or any others)

Evody - Blanc De Sienne Citrus and fig with interesting basenotes.
Calé Fragranze D'Autore - Fulgor Fig leaves, saffron, magnolia, and graphite. Some interesting juxtapositions of smell.
Carner Barcelona - El Born Citrus, fig and vanilla but only vaguely gourmand.
Ineke - Hothouse Flower Sunny with earl grey tea, lots of green notes plus fig and frankincense.
Andrée Putman - Figue en Fleur Springtime in Provence.

Pick up a little something from perfume Parlour. A sample set from 4160 and join us as a perfume nutter guru. Grin

Do you think TPS would let me choose a box? It would be so much fun. And only slightly megalomaniac

NInfeo Mio is good, fresh and citrus zesty, and so is Cassis en Feuille.

MrsGruber · 12/02/2018 20:31

Pest - I'm imagining your extensive knowledge and curatorial panache working much better at Bloom. Maybe they need a 'Mumsnet Perfumistas love' collection...Smile. Or maybe you could get Rouiller White interested in that concept?

I'm not sure how much 'picking' goes on with TPS boxes?

mrsreynolds · 12/02/2018 20:36

No Malone!
Love it

JanetStWalker · 12/02/2018 20:47

We should rename Mon Guerlain as Non Guerlain.

Talking of which, I fished the box out of the bin wiped off a smear of mayonnaise and repackaged it ready for Mother's Day. I won't tell her if you won't. Wink

Judydreamsofhorses · 12/02/2018 20:56

SOTD is FM Hiver. Appropriate, as it is so bloody cold.

CountFosco · 12/02/2018 20:58

Have any of you ever heard of galaxy perfume? I was going to buy a specific AC perfume but it's not on their website!!!! I've emailed to ask them if it's a glitch but in the meantime I looked elsewhere and found it rather cheap on galaxy perfume. But I've not heard of them before and can't find their bricks and mortar address on their website which is always rather suspicious. So I was wondering if any of you lot know about them?

mrsreynolds · 12/02/2018 21:00

I'm liberally spritzed in sexiest scent

CountFosco · 12/02/2018 21:09

Forget it, I googled reviews and although they seem legit they are also based abroad, shipping takes forever and depending on exchange rates you can be charged more than you are expecting. Bum.

JanetStWalker · 12/02/2018 21:17

Google the reviews, Count. Doesn't look good.

BluebellGal · 12/02/2018 21:19

Loving the chat and freesia recommendations - welcome terriers (run away while you can hehe)

MrsPest TPS should totally let you curate a special mumsnet perfumista box! Imagine the fun that could be had. I’d also like to see Sarah M curate a box.

I really enjoyed Agonist Isis today. A warm and sweet vanilla with plenty of spice.

Excellent brand creation there MrsReynolds Grin I would never pay full price for a JM, they’re like gnats piss on me. Although I like some JMs, I cannot understand why they are so popular when so many complain about the sillage/ longevity. Shay and Blue are similar but much cheaper, so perhaps people just don’t know what else is available if they want something different to the usual high street offerings.

I actually passed through Belfast airport a couple of weeks before Christmas and tried to test some JMs (to work out what to order from PP!) they’d sold out of the majority of their range and didn’t even have any testers left - the sales staff were in disbelief when explaining the rush they’d had (it was a fairly decent sized concession). So Jo Malone shelves were depleted while all the other perfume shelves were full. That’s some marketing genius.

mrsreynolds · 12/02/2018 21:33

Why thank you bluebell
I like non guerlain too
I've smelt JM velvet rose and oud in their York shop.
It was pleasant

PerfumeIsAMessage · 12/02/2018 21:35

Exactly. JM is smoke and mirrors. I am going to order some more PP JM's because I do like the scents, but I'm not daft!,

JanetStWalker · 12/02/2018 21:48

I thought JM's Dark Amber and Ginger Lily was the dog's bolleaux until I fell down the rabbit hole.

I now consider it the gateway drug of the perfume world. Smile

mrsreynolds · 12/02/2018 21:53

Honestly?
I think the next scents are better than no malone
Apparently next cashmere is a dupe of estee lauder sensuous nude but I haven't smelt that so can't comment
I'm not keen on Tom Ford either
Such ugly bottles! Ugh

JanetStWalker · 12/02/2018 22:03

The orange blossom is really lovely but it lasts for all of 20min. Ridiculous.

FragrantFloozy · 12/02/2018 22:25

Im outing myself as a Jo Malone hater.

I’m yet to find a JM perfume I would wear. I’m far from a perfume snob (may I present my vast celeb frag collection for your perusal Grin)... but they’re just yawningky linear and have little lasting power on my skin (with the exception of the sillagr monster Red Roses...which as a rose-leaning person I’m afraid to say I hated ...like cheap Bulgarian rose essential oil...Bleurgh!).

I love the smell of freesias, though. Theyve got such a euphoric vibe...so feel good and fresh and lovely. Have yet to find a fragrance with a realistic freesia, though, sadly. Will watch and sniff recommendations keenly!

SOTN is a top up of Songes. I feel like Spring is in the air in London. Freezing but a lovely bright day spent outside. Here’s hoping...

FragrantFloozy · 12/02/2018 22:27

Tom Ford list me at Fucking Fabulous, MrsR Grin

FragrantFloozy · 12/02/2018 22:27

lost

MrsGruber · 12/02/2018 22:40

Having a lovely evening trying out a couple of the Feel Unique pic'n'mix ELd'O samples:

You or Someone Like You is a mint under-cut with grapefruit. Really striking and fresh. The lovechild of Aqua Allegoria Herba Fresca and Pampleune.

Une Amourette is built around a honking great non-earthy patchouli and iris accord which is dry, spicy with a hint of indigo ink. Made me think for a moment about Tabu, but I cant get to my sample to compare.

Both are interesting and well worth trying but think they have disappeared from the Feel Unique sample section.
