Welcome to the long running perfume thread. Discuss Scent of the Day, fave dupes and scents of ALL price brackets. You don’t have to spend a fortune and we will encourage you to get a sample first. That said, hiding your credit card in the freezer is recommended.

Old thread

We also have managed to get a 20% discount on a Perfume Society box and are discussing it on The Big Sniff.

Yep Pest Vanille D’Iris is fast becoming my favourite (CBA) perfume... shame I only have 1ml left and zero budget for new purchases.

Been thinking a lot about suffragettes this week with the vote centenary (eternally grateful to them all). Perhaps a shallow thought, but what perfume would they have worn in the 1910s? I like to associate events/ history with smell! There must be some perfumes/notes we still wear now? I read an interesting article on BBC today where they’d interviewed women called Emmeline to see what impact it had on their life - they all said it had made them interested in women’s rights (for different reasons) even though they hadn’t all been named after Emmeline Pankhurst. Now listening to the hot chocolate song!

Child free bliss tonight (staying at Grandmas) SOTE 4160 Rhubarb & Custard.... yummy. Good one Piam for giving 4160 another go - think they’re worth it. I’ve disliked so many that I’m now addicted to. I think it’s because they are nostalgic to me in some way, not sure why though. I don’t wear them to work but love coming home to a 4160 gourmand- it’s keeping me off the chocolate at least!

Big day tomorrow presenting to approx 100 in the big smoke about a project I’m managing. Hmmm what perfume to wear??

BluebellGal · 07/02/2018 19:11

MrsG I’m green with envy of your trip to Paris. Not wishing my DD childhood away but I can’t wait til she’s old enough for perfume hunting trips to glamourous destinations!

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 07/02/2018 19:37

Bluebell I'm sure 4160s Goodbye Picadilly was based around materials in use around that time as a tribute to Suffragettes. One of my favourite 4160s but it divides opinion.

Here's another question to pair with looking back: inspired by Elon Musk's antics, what would a space scent be like? With alien materials not available on Earth I suppose an entirely new smell could be possible...

Needed reliable today for day out of office chairing a thing - went for Kenzo Flower. Got home to find the eBay Chanels have arrived. Will find out now if they're any good!

BluebellGal · 07/02/2018 20:08

Ooh Cheap thanks for pointing that out... just read up on Goodbye Piccadilly and can’t wait to try. Lucky for me, a lovely perfumista on here is due to send me her sample. Very happy I can be a wannabe suffragette! Love this thread Grin

I reckon a space perfume would be metallic. So possibly time to draw the raffle numbers (not smelt this) Deliria L’Artisan Perfumer... something Ozonic (Francis Kurkdjian Aqua Celeste)

SoFancy · 07/02/2018 20:22

I'm going to the post office tomorrow, Bluebell - I'll post it first class so you get it for the weekend Grin

MrsGruber · 07/02/2018 21:14

Bluebell you are right about Goodbye Piccadilly. And the accompanying notes say that violet was a favourite with Suffragettes. So think we missed a collective trick here yesterday Sad.

Some suffragettes might have smelt a lot like us. Perfumes of the era included (thank you Scent and Subversion):

Apres L'Ondee (1906)
L'Heure Bleu (1912)
Quelques Fleur (1912)

Shem-El-Nessim (Grossmith, 1906), was, , inspired by Coty's 1905 L'Origan. You can buy samples from Bloom. It's beautiful.

BluebellGal · 08/02/2018 08:46

Thank you SoFancy Smile

Excellent work MrsGrubeer I like Violets and shall wear tomorrow

Today I am in Avery E for work trip. Classy musk/Iris and soft sillage is perfect for today

teta · 08/02/2018 08:59

Bois de iles today .
My skin amplifys aldehydes and it’s annoying me..Probably due to the fact I’m tired and headachey and coming down with dcs bug.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 08/02/2018 16:11

I just bid on some old Yardley Sea Jade and also a job lot of stuff because there were a couple of old YSLs in there.

Sotd Holy Smoke. Love it. Wafted round like a human joss stick. Obviously it only lasted an hour or so as it was LoF but with each respray I felt like I was in Cardinal or Avignon.

JanetStWalker · 08/02/2018 18:13

By bargain blind buy Mon Guerlain arrived today. It's not altogether unpleasant it's just extremely boring, hard to fathom that the house that brought us classics like Shalimar and LHB can churn out such pedestrian mass market shit as this.

I swear I can hear my bottle of Feve Delicieuse sniggering contemptuously. Hmm

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 08/02/2018 19:44

Oh Janet what a fab image. Now imagining my bottles with personalities...

SotD was Misia. Big violets settling down to softer powdery iris and violet combo. It was always going to be a winner for me!

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 08/02/2018 19:49

Oh, and I forgot to say - Scent and Subversion arrived today. What a gorgeous book! The colour of the dust sleeve makes it seem like something from the 50s even though it's not, the purple inside is lovely and those adverts/posters are fab. If I lived on my own in some posh trendy flat my wall art would definitely be vintage perfume ads. Swoon.

And I've not even read it yet...

Judydreamsofhorses · 08/02/2018 20:21

SOTD is LDR again. God, I feel SO FED UP just now. I hate this time of year. I am bored to tears of all my winter clothes, but it’s too cold for spring-y stuff. Work is so full on I can barely breathe. Plus these endless dental treatments and appointments. I feel like I want a holiday from my actual life. Maybe I need to crack out Bronze Goddess or Sel Marin tomorrow and pretend it’s summer? Or will that make me feel even worse?

CountFosco · 08/02/2018 20:28

We are a carbon based lifeform, and most molecules that we can smell are carbon based. The only other element that can form the same diversity of molecules is silicon. If we were to discover a silicon based ecosystem we wouldn't be able to smell their aroma molecules because they wouldn't interact with our nasal scent detectors. As far as molecules that we can smell go there are cultural factors that mean we like some smells more than others and maybe a different intelligent carbon based life form may like some smells that we find disgusting. But chemistry is the same across the universe so there are the same smelly molecules possible everywhere.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 08/02/2018 20:32

I keep thinking I want to squirt Jade or Eau du Sud or Paris, Judy.

I am drowning in marking, and have 5 classes getting antsy because of their exams so they're arsey and stressy.

I've had a bath and a hyaluronic sheet mask, fried eggs and chips and am now in Opium.

CountFosco · 08/02/2018 20:34

Do you think 4160 Tuesdays will make Goodbye Picadilly scent of the week for us so we can all smell like suffragettes?

Bluebell I'm in Avery E again as well, also for work. Although I don't think anyone has said they think it's FB worthy we all seem to be enjoying it!

MrsGruber · 08/02/2018 21:15

Still no coffee or perfume Sad.

It's early days, but PiaM you may just have given us a contender for our next thead title: I've had a bath and a hyaluronic sheet mask, fried eggs and chips and am now in Opium.

SoFancy · 08/02/2018 22:07

Mon Guerlain is a right dullard, isn’t it, Janet? Grin

Misia sounds lovely, Cheap. To my shame I’ve never tried any of the Chanel Les Exclusifs.

Judy, I feel exactly the same. I’m so over black —fucking— opaque tights, cold feet, grey skies, WORKING for a living and bloody February!. I want to sit in a sunny garden, drink ice cold white wine and play with my perfume all day, goddammit! Grin

I’m in bed drinking tea and sniffing one of the Big Sniff samples that shall not be named as we haven’t officially sniffed it yet. It’s as dull as dish water and am contemplating scrubbing it and going for a heavy dose of Apres l’Ondee, which is one of my favourite sleep scents...

Night all

MrsPestilence · 08/02/2018 23:21

Sorry, I have to ask MrsG. Are you sure you are not pregnant?

OP posts:
MrsGruber · 08/02/2018 23:34

LOL

MrsGruber · 08/02/2018 23:36

Pest, no, it's definitely flu. Grin

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 09/02/2018 04:58

There's something a bit "relentless" about this time of year, isn't there Judy? I'm seeking solace in my happy shoes - a few fabulous pairs that have replaced my usual office flats and can easily be glanced at for a quick dose of joy.

BluebellGal · 09/02/2018 13:16

Woke up this morning to the ghost of Avery E. It’s sure got some staying power that one and seems to get stronger on me through the day. Sprayed over with 4160 Mothers Nature Naughty Daughters which has dried down into a pleasant fruity floral. On opening it felt quite childlike- something I would have bought as a young teen- strawberries and flowers. It feels nostalgic. Quite like it, but not mad for it (yet)

JanetStWalker · 09/02/2018 14:04

Dullard is right, SoFancy, it's so bland it doesn't even qualify for the cupboard of shame. Shock

Chloe Love Intense today. Intensely blue/purple smelling with a cruel bitchy streak. Head ache inducing on the wrong day but it's never ever boring!

CountFosco · 09/02/2018 16:46

4160T SotW is Be Careful What You Wish For.

My SotD Dryad. It's my sensible grown up perfume that DH loves as well.
