Lots of lovely things to smell.
Everyone is welcome.

Lonestar Memories for me today. Perfumista colleague had this Bianco Carrara thing on again that she's spent a fortune on. Oddly named as it's oudy and cumin (ie sweat, sadly) to me.

Judydreamsofhorses · 30/11/2017 18:11

SOTD is MMM Fireplace. I went back to work today, through a bloody blizzard, because I had students doing assessed oral presentations - none of them turned up due to the weather. VERY annoying.

explodingkittens · 30/11/2017 19:35

Oh no judy, I'd be fuming! Don't you just love students sometimes Hmm

Am home, bathed and cozy yet hideous fleece pjs. Dh hates them, so it's lucky I put on Another Kiss By The Fireside, which he said 'smells nice' - high praise indeed! I'm liking this more and more - its so cosy and smoky and then there are lovely lavender/rose notes on top, yumyumyum.

JanetStWalker · 30/11/2017 19:36

I'm in my secksay TF Noir Pour Femme again, just right for these fecking freezing temperatures.

MrsMacNally · 30/11/2017 20:03

Think I just lost a post so trying again....

So I went to work too, but felt pathetic....along with all my colleagues.... Can't remember so many people all being ill at the same time before.

Things got better when I got home. Freshly made chocolate cake (courtesy of DD) AND my 4160s delivery. Mainly Xmas presents (just about everyone is getting a 9ml) but also The Enchanted Forest.

Although my sense of smell (never mind my other critical faculties) are horribly impaired, I couldn't resist a squirt. It's very nice - an airy green and minty opening, quickly into something herby that smells like thyme, and then dry, buzzy, wood (norlimbanol?). But it's not especially dark or sticky. It's a mellow, dry wood heat without the incense. Smells ever so slightly of rubbing liniment (or maybe even linseed??) - just enough to hint at a healthy circulation. If you haven't got access to a wooden sauna cabin, in an enchanted forest, this would be a good substitute. Smile. It layers well with Lemsip. I need to try again when I can appreciate it properly.

MrsMacNally · 30/11/2017 20:07

EK - if you like lavender, have you tried The Lion Cupboard? It's been a slow burner for me but I'm coming to the view that this is one of the 4160s greats.

OCSockOrphanage · 30/11/2017 20:43

SoTD has been the PP version of Prada's Infusions D'Iris Cedre. It lasts better than the original (which doesn't last long TBH) and is spot on in every respect. For £5.75 for 13ml, it's fecking brilliant. Immensely wearable. Softly woody, subtly floral, wafty sillage. Lovely, a keeper, and an instant go to.

explodingkittens · 30/11/2017 21:30

With Perfume Parlour, is it better to buy the spray or the roll-on? (Asking for a friend Wink)

OCSockOrphanage · 30/11/2017 21:51

Personally, I prefer sprays but I got started cheap with small roll on oils. Some smells work well in either format but of the scents I liked best, I have tended to buy a 13ml spray later, and it's a good way of getting a lasting scent. Spray over oil is indelible.

MrsMacNally · 30/11/2017 21:59

Bluebell - yes, if you move between scent families, the 4160s are quite different (although reflect the aesthetic sensibilities of the house 'Nose'). When you are looking within a category I think you can sometimes spot a family likeness even if the scents themselves are quite different. (Babylon Sunset and Midnight in The Palace Garden perhaps?). This is quite a subtle thing - like noticing cousins have the jawline when you see them side by side at a wedding? What do you think Green?

explodingkittens · 30/11/2017 22:12

I've not tried The Lion Cupboard MrsM but would like to...trying not to buy anything until the new year but might treat myself then. It sounds intriguing. My grandfather had a 'lion cupboard' too - it was sold after he died and I know my parents always regretted it. Would be fascinating to find out if my family's lion cupboard smelled anything like Sarah's!

PerfumeIsAMessage · 01/12/2017 06:15

PP - definitely sprays. I have several (ahem) roll in oils but they are a faff.

If I order to here I have to have oils as they won't ship sprays.

FloofyCatIsComingToTown · 01/12/2017 08:16

1st December! I am here and ready to live vicariously through anyone who has a perfume/beauty calendar! (I had choc in my homemade MiniFloof AC which I have already eaten Blush)

PP I started off with oils as more cost effective but the sprays aren't that much more £££ and I don't really like the feel of oil on my skin (see also any food touching another type on an plate, and 11 million other fussy things). PIAM I would offer to receive here PPs for you and ship them but I don't think RM lets us send overseas at all these days?

I love this thread. Today I have learnt the word "mouilettes" which will be very useful Grin and that a Lion Cupboard was an actual thing!

It's interesting seeing the discussion about what "unites" 4160s, there is definitely a "house note" which I prefer in some (fruit, ouds) than others. Also interested to know what green thinks!

So sorry so many of us are still in the sick bed and hope everyone feels better very soon - I suppose the only "bright side" is that better to be poorly now than over Christmas? Cold comfort when you feel like crap now though Brew I finally had my minor op and officially "convalescent" according to DH who takes his nursing duties v seriously, so while not actually sick, am bloody sore and on bed rest which is being strictly enforced by my nurse! Still at least it's done before Christmas

FloofyCatIsComingToTown · 01/12/2017 08:17

Oh sorry, have also done my pathetic attempt at a seasonal name change, I thought I'd keep the Floofy as NCing can be very confusing for me anyway

MrsPestilence · 01/12/2017 08:44

I recognised you Floofy Grin brilliant that the Op has happened. Hope you recover quickly and that the result is a positive effect on your life.

Nice advent calendar MrsM, can you remember what you put in it?

Kittens, I got DD and her BFF to do a scent testing and Another Kiss by the Fireside was one of their faves. They also both liked Gunpowder Rose. BFF has trotted off with a sample of Rosa Ribes (another 4160 convert in the making Smile). DD tried TF Scent and it smelt just like wee on her Grin

As Janet says, it is fecking freezing so SotD will be something warming. Am spending the weekend on a cold windy island, in a caravan with no heating Confused

TKMaxx have some Miller Harris candles for £19.99, less than half price. Have got Rose en Noir for DMiL. It will be hard work parting with it. Might have to get the perfume for myself.

Multiple Blues welcome to the thread.

Hope all the sick people start feeling better soon. Flowers

I have a M&S advent calendar, feel really selfish having something just for me! Box 1 smells like pink Oil of Ulay circa 1980s, not sure it is my thing. But bound to be something I love somewhere in the boxes.

Green DD and I resisted the Fleur du Matin but did buy DH some Le Pamplemousse.

Thanks for all the PP advice. I quite fancy the version of Miss Dior, TF Tobacco Vanille (reviews suggest it's more tobacco-y than the real thing) and Prada Infusions d'Iris. I'm going to be very good and hold off until the new year though.

Can't wait to hear about everyone's advent treats - daily updates are essential please!

SOTD is Captured by Candlelight. Delicious boozy dried fruits and candlewax. I keep sticking my nose down the front of my sweater - lucky I'm alone in the office...

Floofy good to hear you've had your op - rest up and enjoy your bedbaths Grin

JanetStWalker · 01/12/2017 12:21

Shazam! is feeling vaguely festive today, one of my fave 4160 Tuesdays Xmas Smile

teta · 01/12/2017 13:31

If any of you like Friedemodin there are 5 bottles of Rosee de Nuit left on Tk Maxx online.I just nabbed a big bottle as it’s a really lovely spicy woody violet perfume and it’s normally very expensive but it’s selling like hot cakes.

MrsMacNally · 01/12/2017 17:17

Best wishes for your post-op recovery Floof. Yes, Pest, I kept a master list! Nearly ended badly this am when I slipped on black ice whilst carrying it to its recipient's front door. Managed to save it, but have wrenched arm and back in the process....lethal here this morning. Fell over on school run too. Need to soak in a hot bath tonight.

CountFosco · 01/12/2017 17:30

SotD is the first perfume from my Atelier Cologne Discovery Set: Orange Sanguine. The little card says it contains blood orange, jasmine and sandalwood. I got lots of orange initially (appropriate for Christmas) and a touch of sandalwood. It seemed to fade quite quickly but was discussing that with my colleague and she said she could smell it when we were in close proximity. So first day of advent a perfume success. Otherwise exhausted, was out with DH last night (had a lovely meal), home just before midnight then up at 4am to be in work for 6am. Had a long day and now have to make tea #shattered.

MrsSchadenfreude · 01/12/2017 17:30

Oooh I love Friedemodin, but already have a bottle of my favourite Feu Follet, courtesy of TK Maxx.

SOTD is Up the Apples and Pears. Once the pickled onion note wears off, it's fine, but sometimes I can still smell the onions after a few hours!

I love the Lion Cupboard (and the story behind it). It reminds me of a washstand that I had as a bedside table when I lived in the loft of an old house in Vienna.

Goodbye Piccadilly smells very lavender-y on me, whereas the violets predominate on DD1.

MrsMacNally · 01/12/2017 19:09

Day 1 of the 4160s sample calendar was ....

...Babylon Sunset Smile.

I love this, but have not worn it in very cold weather before. It's a fruit-floral that manages to be rich and juicy and innocent and spontaneous all at once. It's like one of those luminous mid-summer days that go on for ever. Gorgeous. (Note: I'm not usually much of one for fruit-florals).

MrsMacNally · 01/12/2017 19:14

I never got beyond the onions MrsS. Please tell us about Feu Follet? I saw some once in TK Maxx but didn't get a enough of a sense from the Fragrantica reviews to risk a blind buy.

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 01/12/2017 19:26

Hello all!! December at last!!! Woo! but yes, bloody freezing

Late to this one but yes to sprays over oils for PP. I started with oil because of the price but find the silage better on the sprays.

Good news on the op Floofy. Glad DH is looling after you so well.

SotD was Advent Calendar Atelier Cologne (henceforth known as ACAC) Cafe Tuberosa. Really really lovely coffee opening with a hint of tobacco I think (although not in the notes) which then settles into a more floral smell. Nice but wouldn't mind the coffee hanging around a bit longer.

Also got a marble lipstick in Look Fantastic. Was a not too bad coral on today but it promises to be different every time so who knows what it'll be like next time!

MrsMacNally · 01/12/2017 19:51

M. Tauer has an advent calendar using the medium of on-line story-telling (he's releasing a video of himself reading a chapter every day).
