Head shave to go grey

Has anyone gone down the buzz cut route in order to transition to grey?

I am seriously considering it and just bunging a hat on rather than go through another disappointing processing episode and putting off the inevitable or dyeing over it when it turns a weird shade.

I am absolutely comfortable being grey.

So has anyone bitten the bullet and if so how was it?

I am loving the bob ideas on here. I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that my grey hair pattern is only going to work if I grow it into a bob so the patches become streaks. It just doesn’t work with a pixie.

I am going to reassess it around Christmas time and decide whether to bite the bullet and grow it or go to the hairdressers and get them to match the top to the sides and keep my pixie cut-so it will be platinum all over. I love the colour at the sides and it really suits my skin tone but the top is still really too dark and with the mix of salt and pepper looks drab in comparison.

However a month is a long time and I may feel differently with more growth.

How is everyone else doing?

I'm the same squash, my hair is too patchy to leave short without trying to blend it in. Which is a pain.
I'm not happy with growing it atm but I do want to se what it's like longer.
I have no patience where my hair is concerned.

PSNah · 01/12/2017 09:48

I want to shave mine to let my natural colour grow but I'm fat and would look a mess.

You look fantastic!

blueskyinmarch · 01/12/2017 10:15

Mine is trundling along. I really can't see a lot of difference yet. Maybe after my next cut once more of the highlighted hair has gone i will notice it more. Am going to take another photo to compare with my last one.

blueskyinmarch · 01/12/2017 10:22

There we go. 3 months regrowth. Does it look grey? I can't tell!

It looks white to me bluesky, lovely.

Squashit · 01/12/2017 10:40

blue I wish mine looked that tone- it looks like a really pale pearl blonde, what I would call Nordic. You are so lucky 🍀🙂

coco thanks for the understanding re my current frustration. To blend yours do you have to bleach it more than once before you tone it? How easy do you find lifting it to that lovely white you achieve? I think yours looks very cool.

Psnah I don’t think it is a matter of weight whether you can pull it off but more bloody mindedness and a sort of ‘feck it’ attitude! 😁

I have to bleach areas separately , because the back is so much darker still. I'm pure white at the sides, but that leads onto darker hair. This is why I can't be bothered!
I lift it a lot, I use 40% peroxide, then use the dye I posted earlier, it lifts it more and gives it a nice pearly sheen .

I do regret dyeing it again after growing my colour out.
I cut and dye my own hair so at least it's cheap!
It's hard when you are growing a buzzcut in, I find you still need to keep it in some sort of style. It's always better to keep the back and sides shorter than the top, and use product so it's not fluffy.

Cocolepew · 01/12/2017 12:07

This is my bedhead Grin before I used this toner.

This is after, the ends went a bit lilac because they are damaged from bleach but it definitely lightened up any yellow and gave a more uniform colour.

Coco your hair looks great and it looks to be in excellent condition. Brilliant colour.

I'm now at the scruffy stage but really don't want to go to a hairdressers yet. I fear that they will cut off all the bits I want to grow.

Can you give me any tips on cutting the back of my hair. My clippers have the ear guards so I can do that bit. I fear a mullet is in progress.

Cocolepew · 01/12/2017 21:27

I just clip it up about 4 fingers high, I usually use my hand to stop myself going too high.
I'm a bit cavalier tbh Grin

EraArils · 01/12/2017 21:59

I've got no hair to clip. I have just butchered my hair though, I've cut it too short around my ears. Weird thing is I can't seem to care as I know it will be ok again in a weeks time.

Cocolepew · 02/12/2017 09:46

how bourgeois has posted this on fb it doesn't show much of her transition to grey but there's loads of photos of her grey.

EraArils · 02/12/2017 10:22

Nearly every picture shows her hair with different colours of grey. Her salt n pepper looks good but her grey looks great. I do like her early short style better than the long ones though.

wowfudge · 02/12/2017 10:26

She looks younger grey and the blocky colour of the dye wasn’t natural looking.

EraArils · 02/12/2017 10:29

She looks brighter I think.

Cocolepew · 02/12/2017 11:07

It's interesting to see the dark underneath, I think that's what the back of mine could look like if I grow it .
It does help that she's pretty Grin

Niminy · 02/12/2017 11:36

Can I join? My story is that I had grey hair for ages, then bleached it white for quite a while, then grew the bleach out and had it grey again.

Then came my moment of madness when I decided to let a hairdresser put a colour in my hair - I was bored - and she turned it light brown! Argh! It was a cliched middle-aged woman wants to hide her grey colour. Totally not me.

So I'm growing it out. I like my hair more as my grey returns. The brown didn't suit my skin tone at all and I look much better now there's a visible stripe of grey.

Niminy · 02/12/2017 11:38

Just looked at How Bourgeois's photos. Can't say I like her style at all, preferred her with short hair. But she looks much better with her natural rather iron grey colour.

HermionesRightHook · 02/12/2017 16:10

What a nice thread! Mine is going grey but it's one of those mousy sort of colours with lots of different colours mixed together - comes out a sort of pretty light brown. So the grey isn't showing too much yet. However I've been toying with returning to dyeing it with some highlights to disguise the grey, but I'm not sure I want to anymore.

What I'd really like is some big grey streaks through it - I wonder if you can dye those in till they come naturally??!

On a slightly more serious note, does anyone have a good method for dealing with greys that are a differnet texture to your natural hair? They're much thicker and lusher than my actual hair and some of them are curled - will a smoothing product help?

HermionesRightHook · 02/12/2017 16:10

Original hair, sorry, not actual hair, they're all my actual hairs.

Acrosstheuniverse123 · 02/12/2017 16:19

I have asked various hairdressers what I can do to grow mine out. None of them have suggested bleach . I had terrible highlights which looked awful as the colourist didn't do them around my face, so I had grey roots and then highlights. I tried using semi permanents on it so I could let it fade out, that looked awful after a while. I am in despair. I cannot live with it for six months looking appalling. I have thought about wearing a wig, and shaving it off. I think bleaching it would be the best option, but know it would absolutely wreck my hair which is quite thin anyway. I really really am sick of all the colouring business.

EraArils · 02/12/2017 18:41

Now my hair is looking like a hairstyle and not just a buzz cut I'm playing around with 'what hairstyle to aim for next'.

My hair is not dissimilar to picture 1 now, but grey obviously.

Picture 2 because my hair won't go straight with intervention. No fringe though

Picture 3 is where I really want to be now.

It beats the brorange colour that I was be years.

Across I had my dyed hair stripped out and bleached, the colour was fantastic but the over processing basically killed my hair. Hence the reason for my buzz cut.

Bleaching the hair really does work to grow out the grey but you need a good hairdresser to do it. Take a look at Coco's pictures on this thread, she has great bleached hair.
