Head shave to go grey

Has anyone gone down the buzz cut route in order to transition to grey?

I am seriously considering it and just bunging a hat on rather than go through another disappointing processing episode and putting off the inevitable or dyeing over it when it turns a weird shade.

I am absolutely comfortable being grey.

So has anyone bitten the bullet and if so how was it?

I use this one .
Last time I stuck it on without bleaching first and it didn't look too bad at the roots, but they are darker now so I'm not sure if I should risk it in case they go orange.
I'm very gung ho where my hair is concerned because I just cut it off if it goes wrong Grin.

I prefer it to be this length

Coco your hair is a lovely colour and I do like the cut in the last picture. Somedays my hair looks as light as yours and others.......not as much Sad

Cocolepew · 24/11/2017 18:59

Tbh I do, sometimes, think the grey ages me.
I want it to be as light as the sides all over.
I have lupus and look crap when Im in a flare and that's when I end up dyeing it again.

ChipInTheSugar · 24/11/2017 19:58

I looked for the nyx aria lipstick today but decided against it and chose a different nyx one which is delightfully reminiscent of Heather Shimmer Smile

PurpleMumof3Teens · 24/11/2017 20:04

My hair is very similar to HoosierDaddy!

I've been going grey since 35 (now 40)....It was natural blonde and wavy till 18, then I started going dark, bleached it every couple of months for 5 years then decided to go with the dark...got it dyed chocolatey brown. I got bored of that and didn't have the time for hairdressers so started dying it dark purple at home.
Then I developed a complicated allergy syndrome which meant I could no longer use box dyes - I went over to Directions vegan semi-permanent dyes (amazing bright colours with no bleach!). After a year I couldn't use those dyes anymore either.

Currently I am so ridiculously allergic to everything I am going grey whether I like it or not Grin and have decided to leave it long as last time I cut it (myself, only using scissors and water!) I had an allergic reaction that left me on steroids Shock Even combing it makes me react.

So, I hardly use any products, never dye it, never use a hair dryer and it is in amazing condition...it hasn't been this soft since I was a teenager! And the curls, it just gets curlier every year!

It is a strange mix of dark mouse, gingery and grey! It's unique now and I love it anyway...and my Nan would have loved to have known she'd passed her red hair on to someone!
(Still damp in third photo!)

coco your natural hair has a lovely blended tone. It doesn’t look really dark on top in that photo.

Era yours looks cool.

Chip NYx aria looks a bit scary purple in the tube but looks different on. Worth a try possibly-I find it brightens up my face and makes the grey look somehow less drab for me.

Thanks squash.
Your hair is amazing purple!
I stopped using dark or red dyes due to suddenly taking reactions. That's when the bleach got a hammering Grin.

TheHoundsofLove · 25/11/2017 11:16

Okay, as I have enjoyed looking at everyone else's photos, here's my natural colour. The second picture makes my hair look really thin - it isn't, actually.

And these are the pixies that I am pondering...
I also really like the bob...it would leave some bleach on the ends, but I suppose that it would all be cut out in a matter of months...

Hounds your hair is a really lovely colour Envy

I'm wondering if I should try for a shortish bob. The only thing holding me back is longer hair drags my face down. Believe me it doesn't need any encouragment!
I've decided to leave my hair until after Christmas then reassess Grin. It looked nice and silver at the roots in the sun today.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 25/11/2017 12:47

I keep reading this thread and wishing I hadn't caved in October and gone all over box 'light golden brown' which really suits me when it's newly on but looks tired after 3 weeks. I spent all year last year just dyeing the visible roots and it would have been ready for a crop. I can't face a buzz cut, too jowly, but I will spend all next year getting back to where I was last month. I think my hair is really white at the front, top and sides and darker at the back. I'm hoping it'll be warm toned as that's what suits my warm (red!) complexion. The dye fades to much lighter in the summer, so I may try dyeing the roots a lighter colour. I hate my badger. Sad

InflagranteDelicto · 25/11/2017 13:36

Just found this thread! At 36 I have a pretty cool white quiff, but the rest is various degrees of salt & pepper. At the mo its brown, but I keep thinking why bother, then contradict with the knowledge that I feel relatively young! Hair is already quite short.

Bit put off by how it would work with my dislike of make up. I just don't bother usually, and only wear moisturiser

LilyLoLo · 25/11/2017 20:45

Does anyone have a way of taming the greys? Mine were really wirey before i started dying - I used frizzease serum which didn't really work, but I only have about 10 to 20% grey and I'm thinking of quitting dye because I think I'm developing allergy.

Acrosstheuniverse123 · 25/11/2017 21:04

I have been trying to take the plunge for years. I am absolutely sick to death with all the expense and hassle. I think you either need a good hairdresser or just shave it off. I did have a Pixie cut a few months ago and started growing it out, but had a big event to go to and had to get it coloured, it looked awful. So I am back on the treadmill...I am inspired again, but coming up to Christmas is not an ideal time. At the moment my hair is a horrible khaki colour. If I go darker the roots look awful. I am so so sick of it all.

PurpleMumof3Teens · 26/11/2017 01:38

Thanks Coco !

I love seeing all the crops and Pixies, etc. and all the lovely different shades of grey we all are.

Unfortunately I really don't suit short hair, I've got too much double chin and can't wear jewellery to distract from it Grin

I hate it when hairdressers don't listen, I always come out with triangular hair (pic 1) - which they insist on blow drying so it looks wild - I tried a mobile hairdresser once, she said she'd just thin my hair out a bit then take off a couple of inches...I started out with it halfway down my back, when she'd finished it was ear length. It really didn't suit me at all, I felt like a boy - (pic 2)
I think pic 3 where it is long suits me as it camouflages my double chin and short neck! And I like it thick and curly!

I've been reading this thread with interest and finding it so inspiring. I started going grey early 20'S, starting dyeing it at 26 and am now mid-30'S and fed up of having to deal with grey roots.

I'm seriously considering growing it out, but feel like it will age me, I mentioned it to a colleague and she was horrified at the idea! I also don't know how to deal with the transition, my roots look awful at the moment and I was planning on dyeing them ready for the Christmas party on Friday, but I keep putting it off.
Here's a photo of my roots at the moment: (I don't think the back is actually that white, I think it's the light shining off my hair)

TheHounds my vote is for the pixie.

EllenJane if you have only coloured your hair once would it be worth using colour before to strip out the dye? I understand your hair underneath will likely have been altered from the peroxide but it might be something that is so minimal that you can just use a purple shampoo over or a pale grey hair dye to ease the transition back? Just a thought!

Lily coconut oil is said to be great and a lot of silvers rave about products by ‘White Hot Hair’ although I have never tried them personally.

starsky would you be comfortable with a short cut? If you let your natural hair grow in it looks like it will be stunning. Could you use a root cover up stick/crayon/powder thing to get you over the party bump? Looking at your line of demarcation you have about two months before you could be fully transitioned into a reasonable length pixie or now if you can brave really short 🙂

starsky22 · 26/11/2017 11:28

squashit I'm not sure I'm brave enough for a pixie or shorter, that plus grey hair is too much of a change for me. If I don't like the grey look, they I can easily dye it again, but if i dont like the pixie, then growing it out will take a long time. I'd happily have a bob, had that before and really liked it, although it requires more maintenance as id have to straighten it. At the moment I wash my hair and leave it to dry naturally and it's got a nice wave to it. I have some root cover spray which I can use for the party, so think I'll do that and see how I feel in a few weeks.

I've got a box of dye and a root cover dye in the cupboard, so could easily cave, maybe I should throw them out! But I hate wasting things!

EraArils · 26/11/2017 11:30

Starsky you can always use something like Roux Fancifull which is a temporary hair colour. It's a water based and applied to wet hair which then washes out in your next shower. I used the silver version before I buzzed my hair to simply try to blend my demarcation line. Roux Fancifull Temporary hair colour

ChipInTheSugar · 26/11/2017 12:23

Does anyone know if our darker hairs just lose their colour all along the length or whether the grey grows through from the root?

MagliaRosa · 26/11/2017 12:32

Starsky - I've used Nice n Easy colour enhancer to cover roots temporarily and it works quite well. Lasts a couple of washes but does wash out eventually. Going to do mine for Christmas.

starsky22 · 26/11/2017 13:43

ErArils and MagliaRosa thanks for the product tips, I'll have a look at both of those, as I think think a temporary option whilst the permanent dye grows out could work well
