Head shave to go grey

Has anyone gone down the buzz cut route in order to transition to grey?

I am seriously considering it and just bunging a hat on rather than go through another disappointing processing episode and putting off the inevitable or dyeing over it when it turns a weird shade.

I am absolutely comfortable being grey.

So has anyone bitten the bullet and if so how was it?

Such a great thread, I keep coming back to the idea of a buzz but work in a fairly corporate environment and hate my profile - I definitely don't have dainty features and I'm quite heavy. Any ideas on how I could make it work?

EllenJanethickerknickers · 26/11/2017 15:13

Chipin, a grey hair is grey from root to tip. It doesn't change colour. What happens is that new growth, new hairs, are growing in all the time and initially a small proportion are grey, then as time marches on, more new growth is grey. It often happens first at the temples.

My hair has been constantly dyed since I was 25 or so. Firstly henna dyes then box dyes to hide the grey. Lots of fairly natural shades. I don't suit short hair, I have tried it. I think I'll try just dyeing the visible roots for a while to avoid a badger then go lighter over the summer before growing out the blonde.

I am really struggling at the moment because I don’t like the colour that is coming through. I feel frumpy and dulled down. I have bright white patches but the rest of it is a very unusual murky shade as it is growing in. This is probably going to improve as it grows so I am going to be patient.

This is definitely more of a rollercoaster than I previously imagined. I am cross at myself because it is a bit self-indulgent to be so fixated on what is just hair but that is how I feel and I want to be honest about that.

My mum described it as looking like an ash blonde and says it is surprising what colour has emerged. I thought it would be far more salt and pepper and it is making clothing choices even harder. It is difficult to get an accurate photo as it seems to look different in every one but this picture here is about right.....

Sorry for the moan. Has anyone else felt conflicted during this process?

Squashit Perhaps when it is longer a few silvery highlights would even it out and lift the overall colour? What colour where you previously?
I can imagine that if you were previously dark haired, it must be quite a stark change to get used to... Having blonde hair is a whole different kettle of fish, really, as the contrast is not nearly as dramatic.

ChipInTheSugar · 27/11/2017 11:10

I've come into work and had a kid exclaim "why is your hair grey, Miss?!".

Yeah, thanks for that Hmm

EraArils · 27/11/2017 13:05

Squash I love that mink/ashy tone, its unusual. I really wouldn't despair as my hair colour seems to change almost daily at the moment. Try ditching the silver shampoo for a couple of washes and replace with a clarifying shampoo. I've read that hair with no pigment ie grey hair, will absorb tints and pollutions more easily than dyed hair.

Plus, as more hair becomes visible, as it grows thicker, the overall colour change.

PickAChew · 27/11/2017 13:57

Chip, I have the odd hair that's light brown at the tip and white at the root but mostly they are either dark or light, all the way along.

EraArils · 27/11/2017 15:20

These pictures were all taken today but in different lights. I'm now 11 weeks post buzz.
First picture I am in the shade and my hair looks really dark (my hair used to be really dark ash brown). Second picture my hair looks very salt and pepper with a weird white streak on one side. As it grows I do think it's getting lighter.

Thanks Era that helped get me through the buzz cut blues today 🙂

I took your advice and washed my hair with a different shampoo and then took a picture in direct sunlight and you were right... much better.

Your hair is coming on marvellously. You were right about how different it looks from different angles. A timely reminder for me to be patient ..... which was much needed. Thank-you for that nudge also 🙂

Hounds yes I was pretty dark haired and you are right it is a time of adjustment.

I am going to just do nothing and reassess in a couple of months. If I still don’t feel comfortable I will go platinum like Coco .

That looks pretty light to me squash, its a good mixture as well, pretty much all through your hair.

You do get obsessed with it tbh. I take endless photos and peer at it constantly.

Squashit · 27/11/2017 18:16

Thanks Coco and 😁👍🏻 Re a bit obsessed!

I think your wrong, OP. That colour, when it’s a little longer is going to be fabulous. Really, just stick with it!

EraArils · 27/11/2017 18:29

Squash your colour is simply brilliant, it's a lovely grey. Also see you're rocking the black polo neck....très chic. Grin

Squashit · 27/11/2017 20:29

Thank-you for all the support and encouragement 🙂 I really appreciate it.

squashit I think your hair is coming through a really lovely silver colour, it looks really nice!

I still haven't dyed my hair and haven't even been spraying the roots with root coverup, am trying to just embrace it!

Squashit · 28/11/2017 15:33

Thank-you star that is very kind 🙂

How are you feeling about yours? Sounds like you are doing well 👍🏻

I saw my hairdresser today and talked about options, she suggested some highlights so that the roots aren't so obvious as they grow out. I asked about grey highlights, but it's not a straightforward process and might not take on my hair, so she has taken some strands of my hair and is going to do some tests on them to see how they react and will send me photos. Also talked about a short bob once it's grown out more.

starsky22 · 28/11/2017 20:21

I'm thinking some highlights like this would blend in with the grey roots

Cocolepew · 28/11/2017 20:40

If the highlights are blonde enough you could use a silver or grey toner on them.

Cocolepew · 28/11/2017 20:49

This is silver toner I put on blonde hair a couple of years ago

This thread's so uplifting 🤗
I'm totally silver haired - at the moment it's a Bob, just below chin length. I started going grey when 18, coloured it for years but finally stopped when regrowth was showing within two weeks.
I'm now nearly 64 years old and have recently completely re evaluated my wardrobe from basically black/navy to jewel colours (apparently I'm 'bright winter' 😳 colourings.
I certainly look much more 'alive' with brighter colours close to my face.
I'm also determined to start making an effort to wear makeup - I stopped work last year and didn't bother much with it.
Lots of fabulous ladies on here!

HoosierDaddy · 29/11/2017 07:58

Morning all! I have been AWOL for a few days, I was away with work. My hair is a bit wild at the moment, it has grown out v fast from my last cut (which was only 3 weeks ago Confused )

I think I have to make the decision to allow time to keep it neater / tamed, with more regular cuts, instead of letting it do its own thing. I (kinda) got away with it when I was maintaining my colour, now I look dishevelled.

Oh I met a woman at weekend, with amazing grey hair. It was chin length, tucked behind her ears, and so thick and healthy looking. I would say she was early 40s? but her skin had lovely bright glow. I think her colouring was fab!

TheHoundsofLove · 30/11/2017 13:32

Yes Hooiser I've come to the same conclusion. I think I'm going to go for a chin length bob.

EraArils · 30/11/2017 14:56

I've been looking at short bobs too but I'll never be able to have a neat smooth finish, my hair is wavy and I have lots of it.

I think I'm curious about how the colour will look with slightly longer hair. I'm loving my natural hair colour, much more than I thought I would.

I like the second picture because that is similar to the texture of my hair but I think I would have to do something like an undercut with it. I think the other 2 pictures would look great with grey hair.
