Head shave to go grey

Has anyone gone down the buzz cut route in order to transition to grey?

I am seriously considering it and just bunging a hat on rather than go through another disappointing processing episode and putting off the inevitable or dyeing over it when it turns a weird shade.

I am absolutely comfortable being grey.

So has anyone bitten the bullet and if so how was it?

Myfanwy Your colour is lovely- were you blonde naturally?

MyfanwyMontez · 21/11/2017 12:26

queen
I was dark chestnut brown.

I've found this thread has really made me think hard about my hair which is currently dyed slightly lighter than my natural dark brown. But when it grows there are lots of grey roots. I'm not quite ready to give up the colour but when I do I'll be taking inspiration from this thread 🙂 and Diane Keaton who started with the blonde highlights/grey thing, which I like, and is now silver, which I also like. She's older than me but I love her style.

Squashit your hairs looking great. Some lovely heads of hair on this thread, a real inspiration 😊

Queen I envy your curls, my hair is wavy but not wavy enough to make one single curl. As I grow out my buzz cut my hair is growing in every single direction, my hair hasn't got the memo that it's meant to grow down.

I purchased a cool toned taupe coat a couple of weeks ago and something just wasn't right with it. It didn't look terrible but it didn't look good either. I loved the coat but it had to go back. Taupe is now a no no for me.

I have read that when you go grey/white/silver/salt & pepper then you shouldn't wear any whites that are brighter than the white in your hair. I don't own any white but I'd like to hear what other people think.

Squash Its strange but NYX Aria lipstick is currently my go to lip colour.

My neutrals are slightly different to the straight forward grey, black, navy and white. I go for black, grey, navy, blue red and emerald greens. I think bold colours look great with my hair now.

Cocolepew · 21/11/2017 17:25

My mum wears a lot of white, her hair is completely white, but very, very short. I read ages ago that Judi Dench kept something white against her face because it was flattering. She used to have a white scarf or wrap all the time.

Paintbox · 21/11/2017 18:56

I think wearing a white top with white hair can look fabulous with a bold lipstick and accessories to add some contrast and break it up. I have seen white clothes and white hair looking all too pale and washed out though if no make up or accessories are worn.

EraArils · 21/11/2017 19:05

Ok, so I'm now on the look out for either a white cashmere scarf or a white boat neck or slash neck top. I'm not keen on v necks as I have a scar I like to keep covered.

MyfanwyMontez · 21/11/2017 19:23

I've never really thought about the colours I wear to compliment my hair.Just worn what I felt like - this has given me food for thought!
Just realised I look a bit receding in that pic- I'm not at all. I have a lot of hair but it is fine.

Cocolepew · 21/11/2017 19:46

I agree Paintbox, my mum always wears make up.
I had a white coat on yesterday and looked lovely 😂.
On the GGG facebook page a lot of women start to wear a red lipstick, it always look great.

Paintbox · 21/11/2017 19:56

Yes coco, I think the reason why people in some cases don’t like their grey or white hair is because they have lost the contrast in their looks and this is a shock. It needs replacing with makeup and sometimes accessories in those cases. Then when the contrast is back in place, the light coloured hair looks so striking

Squashit · 22/11/2017 09:38

Loving all the chat about colours and contrast. It is like relearning it all again only now it is about what looks best with your authentic colouring rather than trying to match it to dyed hair. I have to say when you get it right it looks so much better than the dyed hair version IYSWIM.

I personally love red but favour flashes of it with make-up, boots, gloves, bags etc. I have always felt it is too much on me otherwise. I may revise that idea once my hair has grown in.

There seems to be a little movement going on in France at the moment re women embracing their grey hair after Sophie Fontanel wrote and documented her experience. Has anyone read her book?

Hello,

How is everyone doing?

I am rapidly approaching the four week mark and it is growing fast. Still adjusting to the pattern and colour but I am sure when it gets a bit of length I will feel happier with it. There seems to be a mismatch between the darker bits on the top and the pale bits on the side in terms of tone rather than just contrast. Hopefully this will soften as it grows....

Has anyone else who has gone natural with their hair felt like they needed to overhaul their clothing choices too?

Some more photos for inspiration 🙂

Everything with any hint of warmth has been removed from my wardrobe. I can't seem to wear anything that is yellow based and that includes khaki, I still have my well loved Parka London coat that is now redundant Sad

I'm putting off getting my hair cut for fear that a hairdresser will get carried away and cut it too short. I think I can get my hair cut like picture 1 and 2 now (have to buy a black polo neck jumper Grin)......but do I wait a little longer?
Picture 3 will probably be possible in January.

10 weeks since buzz and my hair seems to change colour every single day. I didn't realise that the hair at the top and back is as dark as it is. 2nd picture was taken a few weeks after I first buzzed my hair. The colour difference is noticeable.

I've read that us natural ladies should avoid coloured shampoo as it can stain the hair. We should be using clear or white shampoo. I've been using Tresemmé deep cleansing shampoo, it has a slight blue tint and really brightens my hair.

I just wanted to say how much I am enjoying this thread: you all look great!
I'm in a bit of a similar boat as have spent the last 10 months growing out my highlights (which had started to look like an all-over yellow) to discover that my natural ash blonde now has quite a bit of white hair in it. I actually really love it as they highlight my natural colour...I won't be putting any more dye or bleach over the top! Tbh, I don't know what possessed me to start dyeing already pretty coloured hair in the first place...but there we are!
My only dilemma now is that I have 3 or 4 inches of virgin hair and very yellow ends....it's bra strap length...do I go for a pixie cut and just be done with it or spend the next 2 years growing it out. In fact, I think I've answered my own question!

ChipInTheSugar · 24/11/2017 12:52

I've been following this thread - some gorgeous cuts and greys! Today I had two months+ growth cut off (was already short) and that has just about taken all the dyed hair off. It's at that in between 50/50 dark/grey stage now but we talked about going blonde in the new year if I can't hack the grey (will channel my inner Cocolepew!)

Thats lovely chip, nicely distributed 😀
My problem with mine is the stark difference between the front and back.
I'm still growing it and have dark roots at the back. I think I'll stick another colour on to tone it down a bit.
I use a pearlised platinum dye and it gives a really nice colour, and tones down any yellow.

Cocolepew · 24/11/2017 14:16

Excuse the chipped nail polish, I'm sitting here picking it off Blush
This is the contrast in my hair atm.

I decided dark roots on blonde would look better than grey roots on dark! Are you properly growing it or having a long pixie kind of style?

Squashit · 24/11/2017 16:42

Era that is exactly what is happening with mine. Thank-you for posting the picture as it has given me confidence to continue because yours looks great! I am loving the photos too. I say go with the haircut as a celebration of getting this far 🙂

TheHounds definite vote for a pixie and a post here if you feel able to. I best it will look stunning. Have you got any type of pixie in mind?

Chip I totally get where you are coming from re blond and roots v dark dye. There would certainly be less dyeing required so it is a good compromise and one I am keeping as an option if I can’t live happily with my natural hair. Yours though is looking lovely-evenly distributed and highly contrasting too.

Coco what is your process for getting your hair platinum? I want the security of a fall back option if mine looks dingy and patchy but I would need to lift my hair to the same shade as the sides which are very white to make the process worthwhile and times between dyeing longer.

I popped some hair putty in mine today and mussed it up - it is looking decidedly smoky grey at the moment with lighter bits at the sides.

I read that too Era and have been using the everyday shampoo from touch of silver and one a week I do the more intense one. The intense one noticeably tones the hair a more steely colour.

This is the tone that I want if I go down the blonde route....

My h/dresser describes my colour as mink! Sounds better than salt and pepper I suppose lol. Need to buy some silver shampoo next Shock

Cocolepew · 24/11/2017 18:21

Long pixie, though I keep eyeing up the scissors Grin.
I bleach it Squash, its a pain because different sections of my hair need different timings so it takes hours.
Then I stick a platium on it to tone it down, I used to just use toners but find then very drying and bleached hair can ve very porous and sucks too much colour up.
