Head shave to go grey

Has anyone gone down the buzz cut route in order to transition to grey?

I am seriously considering it and just bunging a hat on rather than go through another disappointing processing episode and putting off the inevitable or dyeing over it when it turns a weird shade.

I am absolutely comfortable being grey.

So has anyone bitten the bullet and if so how was it?

Is it ok if I join you all? I wanted to say I think everyone who has gone dye-free or is thinking of doing it, is fab. I know it can feel like a big step, especially when family and friends aren't particularly enthusiastic or supportive eyes dh

I'm currently on my second attempt to be dye-free. It's been less than a month but I have a lot of white and grey - much more than when I did my first attempt:

My first attempt started June '15 and I had it lopped off into a longer pixie on 21st Dec '15.
I ended up sticking a box on it 22nd March '16. Why didn't I just leave it be???

The last pic is my current regrowth. It's been less than a year since the pixie started to grow out (couldn't find the hairdresser) and my hair is shoulder length again, and that's with a few of diy cuts, I don't think I'll be cutting it off again anytime soon...maybe.

pickle I agree with squashit. You have at least 1.5 inches if not more of beautiful deep grey to play with. It'll be a lovely colour, unique I think.

doctorboo · 12/11/2017 20:24

@Squashit major kudos to your husband. Mine doesn't like my hair cropped, never said anything about the colour though either, which is telling 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

ilovecherries · 12/11/2017 20:24

This is the top of my scalp at the moment. I'm absolutely gutted by the amount of hair I'm losing. It was dyed with a semi permanent 4 days ago (because the hairdresser said the grey was making the baldness more evident) and they said a very short cut would make it look even worse. At the moment though it looks to me like I'm wearing my FIL's crossover :( I'm so tempted to whip it all off, give it a chance to recover and see how it grows back. No idea what colour it actually is but I suspect white at the front and salt and pepper elsewhere.

Oooh do you think. I'd be comfortable I think and my hairdresser would not be the least bit surprisedGrin

I just can't imagine what is like to be my natural shade. I haven't seen it since I was 14.I've been every colour but! I imagine it's v liberating...

Squashit · 12/11/2017 20:53

ilovecherries I found when I used semi dyes they washed right off the grey and stayed darker on the longer processed bits so the grey looked like scalp IYSWIM.

I have found that increasing my protein and veg helped enormously when mine thinned out after a VLCD. Have you dropped your calories down lately?

I think you are wise in dropping the colour. How about a cut like these? I think shorter but coming forward in a Seberg pixie would look great.

Hi DrBoo - your natural hair colour looked great then, how much more fabulous could it be now?

I do love those styles. Worried I'm too slack of jaw and neck for so much exposure but they are lovely. I've lost 50lbs this year, (so not super fast), and I've been eating low carb, so loads of veg and protein.

Worriedobsessive · 12/11/2017 21:23

I’m embracing my grey, and have realised that I have to have strong eyebrows and lip colour or I look dead. So I’ve invested in some very lasting lipsticks and a Mac brow thing and look tons better since I ditched my kardashian-labia pinks and nudes.

EraArils · 12/11/2017 22:01

pickleface I really do. Your hair is a really lovely colour and you've already grown it enough to have a great haircut.

pickleface · 12/11/2017 22:21

Thank you! All the gorgeous pictures here are giving me confidence. My mum is pure white and rocks it totally. Might be my turn soon though I think mine will be more of a steel colour..

Puppylucky · 13/11/2017 05:00

This is me a year after my last dye job and with a new shorter hair style - I love my colour !

Hair envy here puppy

I have hair envy here too. Especially for the lovely cropped cuts, but having just spent a couple of years growing mine out (and suffering through the Lego Hair phase) I’m not ready to chop mine off again yet.
I’ve tried hair masks and coconut oil but still get the frizzies underneath at the back, it’s hard to get a good pic but this is the problem, it’s been straightened, a touch of coconut oil and some frizz ease secret remedy but still got the kinks! It’s ok when my hair is down but shows when it’s tied up or I do a half up do (which I do a lot).
I do like the stripe I’m developing at the front though!

This is today’s favourite hairstyle and looking at my colour coming in -it would look similar.

Love those streaks Maglia

Love this thread ! It was May 2015 there was a similar thread and I decided to join in and stop the dye , I grew it out for 7 month and then chopped all the colour out , a big change as I hadn’t had short hair for over 25 years ! Best thing I ever did , no more chasing the skunk line every 4 weeks . It now almost shoulder length again . If you are just starting hang in in there ! It’s so worth the freedom :)

EraArils · 13/11/2017 11:40

I would like to have the cut hazeyjane has on page 4 of this thread. This is another picture I found for another option.

The 2nd picture I think shows that you don't require gamine features to have a buzz cut.

3rd picture is what I think my hair colour looks like, it changes in appearance in different light which is frustrating.

I might need a tidy up haircut before Christmas, do I go to a mens barbers (cheaper) or back to my normal hairdresser. I haven't been to a hairdresser since April.

This thread is brilliant! I have loved reading everyone's stories and seeing photos. The pics of celebs with grey hair are gorgeous and inspiring too.

Beginning of the year I got a longer pixi and decided to stop dying. This is it after a few months of growing out both.
The shot of the back still shows quite a lot of dye, my hair is less red now but doesn't have much more grey.
The front seems to be getting whiter.
Shortest layers are now almost chin length but oddly, my badger strip seems more noticable than ever.

My hair isn't (always) as dry/frizzy as it looks on these pics!

SierraFerrara · 13/11/2017 20:51

Although in different light, you can't see ant grey at the back.
