Our old thread

Welcome to our new lovely, friendly thread for perfume lovers. All are most welcome to drop in and chat, whether dabbling in scent for the first time or as full-blown fragrance junkies.

Tell us your Scent of the Day, or latest discovery, or ask a question - because one of us is almost bound to know the answer.

OP posts:
MrsSchadenfreude · 14/10/2017 14:16

Mrs M - he is still largely ignoring it (and probably hoping it will go away). I wore it the other day, and like it very much, so it won't go to waste. Bizarrely I passed someone (man) in the street the other day and whatever he was wearing smelled exactly like See You Next Tuesday!

MrsMacNally · 14/10/2017 14:30

Bluebell - yes Smile

We made them in August - words cannot express how marvelous an adventure it was to run amok in that studio with all those marvelous ingredients and create something under Sarah's encouraging and expert guidance.

Will try & post descriptions later - unless anyone else is around and can beat me to it? Conscious some things may have changed a bit whilst maturing in sock drawers...

MrsMacNally · 14/10/2017 14:44

Did you ask him what it was? (And if he was Lebanese and in business?).

(This was the brief for the rich resinous masterpiece MrsS created).

PerfumeIsAMessage · 14/10/2017 16:56

I think we should have MrsS's magnificent post there as our next thread title. That will get the non perfumistas scratching their (Chanel 5 only) chins.

Yesterday was busy- went to meet a Spanish woman to organise lessons for dd and her friend- they did Spanish at middle school but are now in high school they won't, but both want to continue. I wore L'Heure Bleue for that because felt headachy.

In the afternoon it was prizegiving at her old school and the mums do madster stuff like go to the hairdresser before such things so I armed myself in Miss Dior originale and looked scathingly at the coiffed designer handbag lot. Grin

It's warm today so I wanted sharp citrus, did eeny meeny with Ealing Green and Eau d'Hadrien and the former won. It's disappeared now though, so shall have a squirt of EdH before dropping dd off later.

I want to try Musc Nomade now.

Have a lovely weekend all. I shall be applying for my job the ad went up today.

Auldspinster · 14/10/2017 17:27

I need to dig out Cinnabar and Cuir de Lancome, lovely warming scents.

Badders08 · 14/10/2017 17:30

Love cinnabar
Gorgeous

explodingkittens · 14/10/2017 17:34

PIAM, is that your own job you're having to apply for? (sorry if I've missed a post somewhere). Best of luck, it's a horrible situation if so.

Your comment about the 'coiffed designer handbag lot' made me smile - I was at an event last night at ds's school full of similar. I pitched up in jeans, trainers and Feminite du Bois and looked rather out of place amongst the blow dries, camel coats and Chanel No. 5 Wink. Not that there's anything wrong with shiny hair, an expensive coat and a classic perfume of course - I should be so lucky to have even one out of those three!

Am in Dune now, it was calling to me. I agree with whoever upthread who said Luca T must have been drunk when he called it bleak although am slightly disappointed it's not. On me it's a warmish ambery vanilla, although there is an interesting, slightly synthetic, ?plasticky note I can't quite my finger on. I don't think it's a love, because it's sweeter than I usually like, but I will certainly wear it again and see what else I can get from it.

Bluebell I agree AE definitely wouldn't work on a small child!

Badders08 · 14/10/2017 17:58

Applying for your own job PIAM?

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 14/10/2017 18:20

My boss smells divine! Trouble is he is about 20 years younger than me, has a stick up his arse and I doubt he'd take kindly to me saying "ooo boss you smell lush, what is it?" . In fact all of the management offices are fragrant. Heads pa wears a bulgari flanker (I want to say coral, but maybe because it has a coral coloured top) which is amazingly good, but discontinued. Head is a scent junkie too so it's a pleasure to go up there.
Today I wore one of the JM dupes from primark, still there after 8 hours. Not unpleasant.

YouAndYourFloofyCatNose · 14/10/2017 18:50

For mini guest soaps, I was lucky at TK Maxx last year, but if you look on Etsy or EBay etc for guest soaps or soap favours rather than mini soaps, a lot do come up. Nice handmade soaps can be cut into smaller pieces with a cheese wire Grin Also Lush are very obliging at cutting small samples for purchase, I have found. Green i would be delighted to share photos of the ACs when finished but they will really be just little paper bags with Christmas number stickers sort of arranged in a shoebox GrinI am not crafty
*
Bluebell* i like the idea of a Passive Aggressive Advent Calendar for your MIL. Oh the fun we could have with that!

Laughed a lot at “how’s cunt coming along, I’m in a bit of a pickle” Grin you guys are really cheering me up today! Plus a lovely MiniFloofy brought me home a Starbucks Frappuccino thing (which probably cost her a couple of hours wages Shock) and MrFloofy bought me two tubs of posh ice cream so my SOTD is salted caramel, I think. It’s nice GrinQuite tempted to get an Alien sample as this is caramelly I believe?

Judydreamsofhorses · 14/10/2017 19:02

SOTD is MMM Fireplace again. Met up with one of oldest friends this afternoon and she immediately said I smelt lovely.

PIAM that stinks re your job. I had to go through it in a restructure/job evaluation thing in my last place but actually left midway through the process. Hope everything works out okay.

floofy I have Shay and Blue Salt Caramel, and it is very nice. I rarely wear it as I had it on when I got some awful news, but I should really reclaim it.

littlebillie · 14/10/2017 19:08

Tried lovely today 🤢

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 14/10/2017 19:30

Evening all! Popped in to say my SOTD, inspired by the cheap sleb scents thread is Lovely Grin Clearly not a fan Billie. I do like it- it's reliable.

DS1 has been rocking my PP Italian Cypress.

PIAM that sounds horrible Sad Is this a W1A style "reimagining" of two jobs into one?

Feeling torn on The Dark Old Heart of Havana. Love rum (Blush) and it sounds lovely but I may have got slightly carried away with EBay of late. Although... can 9ml really hurt?!

littlebillie · 14/10/2017 19:36

Perfume is so personal and they smell different person to person, I would say it has lasting power though

MrsPestilence · 14/10/2017 19:37

Has anyone tried Aedes de Venustas Iris Nazarena and or OEillet Bengale?

SoTD is Up the Apples and Pears layered with Copal Azur. Someone took a thurible to the pub. Grin

Applying for your own job is a bitch PiaM whilst updating your CV remember to apply for other jobs.

Must dig out The Bonfire Stuff and see what it is up to.

Our loom arrives tonight, over excited.

OCSockOrphanage · 14/10/2017 20:39

The Aedes de Venustas that gets all the love is the rhubarb scent IIRC. Frugal was a big fan of it when she used to be a regular here.

It's probably daft, but when Parfums d'Empire would send sample sets, they had one called Fougere Bengale, and it smelled both very powerful and (curried) appalling, so I used it once and binned the rest. However, if we ever get back to a sensible post protocol, I would say that lots of their perfumes are gorgeous. They were formative for me as a baby perfumista. I would buy several if they came in anytjing other than 100ml bottles. Ambre Russe, Equistrius and Eau Suave stand out in my scent memory. Eau Suave in particular would be my favourite May (month) scent. The sample set was a decent price too.

Tis autumnal here and so is my mood, so it has been another pp TF incense dupe today, of Sahara Noir. Again, not having smelt the original, I can't say whether it's better or worse, but it is very lovely at the PP price for 13ml.

MrsMacNally · 14/10/2017 20:58

Bluebell edited highlights from Thread 5 describing the 4160 adventure (in everyone's words) to give you a flavour of the day and the creations :

...It was great fun - lovely to meet everyone, and I loved the way that we all came up with something completely different! ...

...I'm going to call it Bombfire as it is very smokey, but at the moment it has gone all milky woods...It starts off as slicing the last cucumber for an Indian summer Pimms, while watching the gardener clear up and light a bonfire. An hour later you are shagging in the camellias (that will be the tuberose)....

...Well, I have renamed my perfume "Viennese Coffee Shop" as it has notes of chocolate, coffee, cherry and peach...

.... Given the initial reference point (a piece of turf), I am tempted to christen mine ' A Bit of a Sod'....(update: now renamed A Bit of a Pickle after the cucumber aldehydes and vetiver came through strongly in the matured version)...

...Mrs S created the scent of a rich Moroccan? business man, I fear her husband it about to enter permanent role play. Especially after she named it 'See You Next Tuesday' grin...

... In my astonishment and delight [I managed to] produce something I really like under Sarah's guidance. ..I learnt that my beloved galbanum is rather like using garlic in cooking - wonderful but you really, really don't want to overdo it. I ended up using just six drops of it in the final version of Vipers' Outing and the top notes are as sharp and green as freshly cut grass....

...Everyone's creations were impressive and comically different - green, gourmand, smoky, leathery etc. I think between us we spanned practically the entire perfume spectrum except the pink minger class....

...Oh help, I want to sniff everything and work out what is in it. Then I want to go back to Sarah's and sniff more ingredients. Repeat Ad infinitum. I've been to the opium den, I want to go back....

PerfumeIsAMessage · 14/10/2017 22:05

Thanks for good wishes for job. It's because I am on a roll-on roll-off contract which lasts for term time only. So I don't get paid in summer (hence going to UK to work on summer school) I have done this job for 4 years now, and everyone (including me, really, touch wood) presumes I will get it- this is Italy so you have to win points (10 for a degree, 2 for every year's experience, etc etc) so there is always the scare that someone will jump over me in the points.

In Fendi original tonight. And it's gone straight onto the ebay search list. How such a thing of beauty and sophistication could be discontinued and replaced by the mingers that Fendi churn out now. Chuh. Great review with which I heartily concur here

MrsMacNally · 14/10/2017 22:23

Hope it goes smoothly PiaM. My sister used to wear Fendi...

Hope you're having fun with the loom Pest?

Cheap - we might start lobbying for a W1A Venn section? About the only thing, other than perfume, that's keeping me sane and sort of smiling

You'd fit in just fine at our school EK...we could wear FdB together Smile.

MrsSchadenfreude · 14/10/2017 22:24

Re perfume and memories, I couldn't agree more. I had a sample of Babylon Sunset last week, sprayed it, and was instantly taken back to a drink and drugs fuelled weekend in my yoof that got out of hand. Think the girl I was with wore a perfume that smelled very similar. I couldn't wash it off quickly enough.

explodingkittens · 14/10/2017 22:36

The 4160 day sounds like it was such good fun, count me in if there's another in the offing!

Am in bed, with a dab of Shalimar. Never knew I was the type Wink

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 15/10/2017 00:32

picked up Chopard Enchanted Golden Absolute totally dirt cheap and i honestly really like it, lots of Plum, Jasmine, Patchouli and Ylang Ylang. It was a blind buy because it really was disgustingly cheap and im glad i bought it Smile

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 15/10/2017 03:46

MrsM yes, exactly, yes Grin

explodingkittens · 15/10/2017 11:02

In a total change from yesterday's very grown-up scents, today is CdG/Pharrell Girl. Am pleasantly surprised by this! Woody violets, quite fresh on me, with a minty (herbal not toothpaste, thankfully) note peeking out now and again. Unusual but in a very wearable way.

Makes me really keen to sniff more CdG though, after falling for the incense line and really liking the ?Mark Buxton one I sniffed at SH (the inky one? Can't recall the name) and now this.

re: the convo upthread about the marketing fail of this one. I gave my wrist to ds (14) to sniff as he appears to have quite a good nose, better than dp's anyway! He liked it and identified the minty note I can also smell. I told him it was marketed as unisex and asked would he wear it - he said no. I then told him it was a Pharrell scent - 'Oh yeah, I'd wear it then' Grin I've given him a few samples (acqua di parma/creed/escentric molecules) to try and counteract the Lynx--love, but I'm not so sure I want to part with this one!

MaryLennoxsScowl · 15/10/2017 12:11

All your creations sound lovely! I'm not great at picking out notes so I would love to smell all the ingredients - I think it'd help me identify what I like more easily. Did you put the ingredients on your skin? I have trouble telling when I'm going to like something until I've put it on skin.

I've had a mad week, finishing up one job and starting a very exciting new one that's also terrifying in case I don't measure up, and had also over ambitiously booked to do things every evening of the week, so I'm horribly behind on all the chat here, sorry!

PIAM, best of luck with the job, applying is the pits.

Judy, have you had any relief from your toothache?

Kittens, my 15-y-o brother needs some non-disgusting man spray, any recommendations? This is entirely for my benefit rather than his! Grin

My order of Fire never arrived, the courier claims to have tried to deliver 3 times and then returned to sender, but I'm not sure he actually turned up at all. I need to get in touch with them, but I'm a bit dubious now as the reviews here haven't all been glowing. I like lonestar memories and Another Kiss By the Fireside, but I went off Who Knew almost immediately after buying a 30ml bottle (fickle) and they sound similar, can anyone advise?
