We'll go anywhere in search of things that smell great, and then we discuss them here. Feel free to join us.

Ha! Yes my house smells predominantly of Vicks vaporub atm!
Sorry to hear your household has the lurgy too...i fear a heavy viral load this winter 😔

Pestilentialone · 22/09/2017 12:09

Mrs M Bloom has samples of Zoologist and 60ml bottles. Etsy has travel size and ships world wide (£31.24 inc p&p)

GreenPolishToGo · 22/09/2017 12:28

Greetings all! Lots of lovely new posts. Smile

Midnight Poison is also on my 'to be tried when I get hold of an affordable sample' list despite Luca Turin's less than enthusiastic review. I like Poison, Hypnotic Poison, Pure Poison and Tendre Poison so I don't think I can leave that one untried. And despite what I said about silly space-wasting bottle shapes I do like the apple bottles - very wicked stepmother.

Sock I'd also love to know where you found the Zoologist sample set pretty please. I really want to sniff Macaque, the one Sarah Mac created.

Floofy I have also run into a CF on eBay this week. It is very annoying because it is a Star Wars Lego Advent calendar intended for DS but we have had no show and no response to messages. I hope the Force bites him. I have noted down Eau Sacree - it would bring back happy memories of the day they overdid the incense and cleared the front three pews of spluttering, coughing Mass-goers.Grin

Fab haul Kittens and such amazing names. I'll be very interested to hear your thoughts on them.

Bluebell et al, most of my samples get passed on to DD but I do have a stash of untried and unwanted masculine fragrance samples for anyone planning to put together an Advent calender for a DH/DP/DS. They are:

Solo Loewe Esencial EdT
Givenchy Gentlemen Only EdP
Lacoste Eau de Lacoste L.12.12 Pour Lui Magnetic EdT
Paco Rabanne Invictus Intense EdT
Joop! Wow! EdT
David Beckham Beyond EdT
Lacoste Eau de Lacoste L.12.12 Blanc Pure EdT
Versace Pour Homme Dylan Blue EdT
Hugo Boss Boss Bottled EdT
Jimmy Choo Man Intense EdT
Zadig & Volitaire This Is Him! EdT
Robert Piguet Bois Noir EdP

They are either 1 or 2 ml samples and carded. There is a small (2mm) tear on the spine of the Piguet sample's card. If they would be of any interest PM me.

Oh and does anyone know a good source of empty sample vials?

SOTD is Damn Rebel Bitches, one of the samples Sarah Mac gave us at the perfume workshop, and which she created for Reek Perfumes in Scotland. It is lovely and very autumnal with notes of orange, hazelnut, spice, smoke and wood. I wish it was in her line-up and so could be stalked on 4160's Scent of the Week. Has anyone smelt Damn Rebel Witches, her other one for Reek?

OCSockOrphanage · 22/09/2017 13:09

Green, I just bought via the Zoologist Canadian website. $27.50 plus $5 shipping for the Connoisseur selection (the odder ones) or $44 for the lot, paid via PayPal. Possibly an extravagance, but my preference is for samples and then minis. There are few scents of which I'd want more than 25ml.

OCSockOrphanage · 22/09/2017 13:10

Green you may want to look at PP website for empty vials; sure I read there yesterday that they sell them but you may have to buy them by the gross. I didn't check that.

Squashit · 22/09/2017 14:06

Has anyone come across Y by YSL perfume at a reasonable price?

It was my first perfume and I want to revisit it 🙂

MrsMacNally · 22/09/2017 16:39

Squash - keep an eye on eBay (Green is the expert here); but, as I think she commented before, it was named in an era preceding search engines...I like to imagine this challenge might drive away a few faint hearted bidders....

OC - that sounds remarkably straightforward.

SotD is my very own Bit of a Sod, possibly to be renamed, Bit of a Pickle (think it's the vetiver and the cucumber aldehydes that nod gently in that direction Smile). I really like wearing it - once past the opening whoosh, it's a very gentle, fresh and floral sort of vetiver.

I wandered through Boots and saw some Yardley Ink being cleared out so had a quick sniff expecting a sub-Encre Noir type of thing. In fact it smells like the purest sweet licorice I've ever smelt in perfume. Not for me, but if you have a Bertie Bassett lover in your life this might make them smile.

Oh god you people are the worst - enablers the lot of ya! Grin

I'm sitting on the train in a delightful fug of Dear Polly and Morning Chess, because I've just been round SH and I'm now officially a Scent Hoo-er and I don't care! SH was fab. Really enjoyed it although would be been more fun with a friend to sniff with and compare notes.

I also don't really know what this says about me but I didn't completely hate Secretions Magnifiques. I mean obviously no sane person would actually spend money to smell like that but I was expecting to be repulsed and it just kinda made me laugh.

I may have also bought a bottle of Avignon. I blame you all

GreenPolishToGo · 22/09/2017 18:00

Grin at Kittens. Somerset House was huge fun and responsible for quite a lot of my current wishlist too. Enjoy your Avignon. You have excellent taste.

Sock thank you. Ordering from Zoologist does sound pretty straightforward then. And Canadian parcels are very often ignored by Customs despite being non-EU, which would be a bonus. They pounce on ones from the US, in my experience.

I think "A Bit of A Pickle" is a super name MrsMac and very much in the spirit of 4160 Tuesdays.

Squash I am, despite MrsMac's kind words, no expert on Y but I am very fond of the vintage version. From what PIAM reports it does sound as though modern Y is a pale shadow of its former glory. This website is invaluable for dating YSL perfumes (and others). It is worth checking on eBay regularly because affordable vintage bottles do pop up frequently. Don't pay any attention to stupidly high Buy It Now prices because it can be picked up more cheaply if you're prepared to be patient.

I can't find any empty vials on the PP site but if anyone knows a source of reliable ones do please shout. I have some I don't trust after two attempts to post decants of Blue Grass ended in very scented packages. I know Travalos are well thought of but they don't work with all bottles.

OCSockOrphanage · 22/09/2017 18:00

WIth you on Secretions, Exploding; I wouldn't want a bottle, but I didn't hate it when I wore it on a boating holiday. It seemed to fit the vibe, and smelled better than engine oil.

MrsMacNally · 22/09/2017 18:40

EK - think you need a badge. Can't quite embrace hoo-er, so some slight substitutions, I hope still in your spirit.

Some more ideas too....I am particularly proud to have found out how to get a rose print on the wording (see middle one!).

Love them, Mrs! Think ScentTart might be my new name...although ScentSheep might be more appropriate given how easily I'm influenced!

Am delighted to report that Avignon is very LADDM-y on me - that balsamy note that I love (same thing in Youth Dew, am finally starting to sense a pattern here!). Although I'm secretly hoping it dries down into something a little more austere and churchy...

OC - I could imagine Secretions working on a boating holiday! Did you wear it for the whole thing though? Not sure I could manage that!

The one I was least taken by was En Passant. I just don't think I 'get' FM perfumes. Have now tried En Passant, POAL, Angeliques, Parfum De Therese, Dans tes bras...and they've all underwhelmed me. What am I missing?

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 22/09/2017 19:46

Hello all! I think it sums my week up that when I squinted looked at that last badge I read it as shitty Blush
(Definitely reflects my state of my mind and not the quality of the badges!!)

Never mind. School based tantrums and toddler sickness bugs will have to clear off for it is the weekend and we WILL enjoy it in this house!!

SOTD was PP Paloma Picasso. I like this one more each time I wear it. SOTmiddleofthenight was SJP Lovely shower gel in a bid to banish eau de toddler sick.

MrsMacNally · 22/09/2017 19:49

I really am stopping now.

I am tempted to order a small quantity - which design should we run with and any final requests/modifications?

SOTD is Narciso Rodriguez For Her. I always have a bottle of this on the go, it just seems to work whatever the day or time of year.

floofy how funny that you like that D&G so much. Did you try the Gabrielle?

PIAM I think I have some Sacree samples knocking about if you want. I had a real thing for it then switched my affections to Cardinal, which I eventually bought a full bottle of.

Judydreamsofhorses · 22/09/2017 20:01

kittens I had such a strong reaction to SM I actually had to get DP to put it in the outside bin. I couldn't bear to even have it in the house.

SilverHawk · 22/09/2017 21:49

SOTD Coromandel ! After making a right pig's ear of filling a Travalo.

I'd love a bit of advice needed from you experts, if possible... I have Shalimar Souffle de Parfum but it lasts about an hour. Should I go for the Intense version?
PS I know some think this is awful and like L'Instant. The tail end of both is very similar.

Pestilentialone · 22/09/2017 22:10

Psst Silver you can like exactly what you want to (so long as it smells good on you). Intense sounds like a good idea, all the reviews say similar notes but much longer lasting, which is what you are after.

I quite like that we all agree to disagree on what we like. Perfume smells different on me and DD and we share loads of genes. It smells even more different on other people.

Pestilentialone · 22/09/2017 22:50

Heck Silver if you can find intense, buy it. Nobody seems to have it online.

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 22/09/2017 22:55

my Penhaligon sample set finally came but i am still too ill to try it out Sad its got five feminine and five masculine scents in it. took the top off a couple to try and give them a sniff but could barely small anything so they've been put to one side for when i'm finally better. it's been over a week now and i feel as bad now 9 days later as i did on the first day i was ill!

MrsMacNally · 23/09/2017 10:05

My beef with SM is that it polluted all the other scented postcards in the SH set. Not sure they thought the packaging through carefully enough...

Calming down with a day in classics. Mitsouko on left and Shalimar on right (both pre-90s).

I am realising I really do need to wear a perfume (sometimes more than once) to know if I like it. Smelling strips can be deceptive.

OCSockOrphanage · 23/09/2017 10:07

I had taken my chum the ELdO sample set for her birthday (I bought two), as she was between perfumes, and she opened Secretions, sniffed, gagged, and returned the stopper. I volunteered to use it as I find it quite subtle and odd on my skin. I did have other options too!

MrsMacNally · 23/09/2017 10:28

Do we know what 4160's Scent of the Week is?
