We'll go anywhere in search of things that smell great, and then we discuss them here. Feel free to join us.

Wondering what 'lovely friendly perfume thread' is in Flemish....

YouAndYourFloofyCatNose · 03/10/2017 16:37

You guys are so funny Grin Dameparfum has totally got my vote! Technically I am actually old enough to be a Grandmother on Jeremy Kyle despite being early 40s as I started my family young by today’s standards. Haven’t we all got enough heated blankets and so on to qualify anyway?! Wink

I seriously cannot click on any more links but am totally bookmarking them

I actually am underneath a tartan blanket by the way, which is under a very floofy cat Smile I might even have a little nap and dream of engraved Guerlain bottles...Do you think writing my name in Sharpie on a Perfume Parlour bottle is quite the same? Grin

boldlygoingsomewhere · 03/10/2017 16:46

MrsMac, you will need to use the word 'gezellig'. It is ubiquitous in Belgium (and The Netherlands) and refers to anything particularly pleasant and cosy - like 'Hygge'.

MrsPestilence · 03/10/2017 16:48

Do you have a dymo labelwriter Floofy it would make you very niche and hipster.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 03/10/2017 16:53

'vriendelijke, gezellige parfum draad voor liefhebbers van klassieke oma parfums'

Or a combination of ideas so far...

The first bit translates as 'lovely friendly perfume thread'.

Flatbum · 03/10/2017 16:58

Kontkorstbrabber Easter Smile

MrsPestilence · 03/10/2017 17:01

Not very nice Flatbum

MrsMacNally · 03/10/2017 18:50

Judy - think you may have first dabs on the new thread title...not sure what you make of today's suggestions...?

OC for extra special endeavours there may need to be gold ones...

Won't be troubling my Dutch Auntie with that then Pest....

Hmm, quite a useful reminder that we ought to keep most of the new thread title in a language we can all understand. And, of course, also to alert any stray would-be perfumistas to the presence of like-minded lovely, friendly souls obsessives. So perhaps a token Flemish word, like dameparfum or bomma or oma, and the rest English as usual?

Look after yourself, Floofy. It sounds like your floofy cat is doing sterling duty.

I'm still not sure whether I'd buy E Coudray Iris Rose but it is a lot of fun. In my head the description (aided by Bluebell) has settled on 1970s hair salon with lashings of setting lotion, drying down to old-style Hollywood starlet's jumbled dressing table with spilt powder from a very fluffy puff, and scattered lipsticks. It is probably paragraphs like this which lead other MNers to conclude Flemish would be more intelligible...

boldlygoingsomewhere · 03/10/2017 18:55

Well for me the Panache is still going! A full 24 hours after it was first applied and the musk is still there.

I'm thinking of getting a bottle of Tweed to compare...

PerfumeIsAMessage · 03/10/2017 18:57

You are funny!

I've also yet to be impressed by a JHAG (I have about 20 samples and they all just fade into either nothingness or camel dung oud)

Le Parfum de Therese has lasted, unusual for my skin, since this morning. It's still rocking the Y breeds with Apres L'Ondee though, although the Al'O violetty bit has faded now.

I'm keening for some old Lentherics now. Used to love the Christmas adverts.

GreenPolishToGo · 03/10/2017 19:07

Boldly you need Chique as well to complete the triumvirate that dominated small pharmacies' Christmas gift sections back in the 1970s.

Chique was my mother's cheapie and it smelt marvellous.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 03/10/2017 19:22

That made me want to smell Iris Rose anyway, Green!

I clicked on one of the links and accidentally bought 50ml of Fire, I don't even know if I'll like it! Fragrantica likened it to Tauer Incense Rose and I just clicked through to buy. Blush I have carefully not clicked on any other links. It was £16 plus p&p though so not the end of the world.

SOTD is Tauer Carillon pour un ange, which has incredible longevity and reminds me of my grandmother's perfume, I'll have to ask her what it is! I think it's the lily of the valley. So I do genuinely smell like an old lady today Grin! It probably won't be a love of mine but I'd try it again in spring, it's very pretty - sort of admire but feel isn't me.

MrsMacNally · 03/10/2017 19:29

Have some Geminesse if you want it Boldly? Oh, and might swap my 80s/90s Tigress if you're interested!

In honour of old perfume, I started the day in Avon Persian Wood (50s). I was lucky to get an unopened bottle in a cheap Avon joblot - was fabulous first time I tried (bitter woody oriental). Think it hasn't reacted well to being opened as this time the aldehydes smell distinctly off. Will try again to be sure.

So have gone back to my 'try me' box and had a squirt of Womanity and MMM Untitled. Really like the MMM (want to try it alongside the Pharrell Williams/CDG Girl and also side by side with Chinatown). Womanity is really interesting, but prefer my figs greener, woodier and less synthetic smelling.

Floof you genious. Time to put my 24 pack of sharpies to proper use and get drawing little bees.

Good point on the customs... I was poised to go with the sample set but I might need to have a go at being brave with eBay. Eek!!!

MrsMacNally · 03/10/2017 21:10

This is basically Woolworth's pick'n'mix crossed with the Yankee Candle no one ever buys.

^^ Great description - felt that with you EK.

Oh lordy, I may have clicked on a link and bought something. Honestly, I cannot be trusted around this stuff. 50mls of Fire winging its way to me as we speak, can't wait!

My 67th scent today is Avignon. DP is most impressed with it Wink

explodingkittens · 03/10/2017 21:30

Mary, you've reminded me to re-try my sample of Carillon. I'm pretty sure I liked it last time and I definitely didn't think I was a lily-of-the-valley type.

I need some kind of spreadsheet.

Judydreamsofhorses · 03/10/2017 22:14

SOTD is Chanel 19. Granny chic 4Eva. My MMM Fireplace came and I wonder if it's a bit sweet for me? mrsmacnally go for broke on the thread title. I tried to be rational on that thread but backed off PDQ.

In other news I have terrible toothache again and am scared - I went back last week and she couldn't find anything wrong with exam/x-ray, but it's worse today. She said something had irritated the gum and it would resolve with brushing/mouthwash. I am embarrassed to go back and it is so awkward with classes. Help!

GreenPolishToGo · 03/10/2017 22:26

Grin at Mary and Kittens and the Fire that fell into your baskets! What are you two like? Oh yes, just like the rest of us!

Thank you Mary, I am rubbish at identifying individual notes so the purple prose is the easiest way I can describe a scent. I'm glad it hasn't put you off because I do wonder if I sound like the worst sort of wine critic a pretentious wanker at times.

If you like lily of the valley vintage Diorissimo is heavenly. MMM Untitled is also wonderful and gives me hope that beautiful green scents will continue to be created despite the current tidal wave of Pink Mingers.

MrsMac what a pity about the Avon Persian Wood. It can't be that you haven't stored it correctly so it must be age. I hope it's only the top notes.

I have thoughts about a decant of Avignon. Maybe when I've recovered from the 4160s crowdfunding and SOTW... And I used to think the nail polish habit was expensive...

MrsMacNally · 03/10/2017 22:30

Defo not my turn Judy. Yes, glad to see you and PiaM are still in one piece.

Sorry to hear about tooth trouble. Best wishes to you and to Floof Flowers

OP posts:
GreenPolishToGo · 03/10/2017 22:34

Oh poor Judy Flowers. If you're in pain, go back anyway and don't be embarrassed. I had a mysterious and hideously painful toothache once that I was convinced was some kind of infection. It turned out I'd irritated my gum by grinding my teeth in my sleep. "You must lead a less stressful life," instructed the dentist, which I have to say was not the most useful advice I'd ever been given.

pestilencalone · 03/10/2017 22:40

@OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack have the antibiotics kicked in yet? You've been poorly for a while and I was hoping to see you bounce back and start enjoying sniffing Flowers again.

Judydreamsofhorses · 03/10/2017 22:41

green I swear I have been st the dentist more in the last six months than my entire life. My partner got made redundant last year and since the start of this year I have been clenching in my sleep due to stress, which has caused a whole host of problems. I now have a custom-made (very sexy) night guard but it only minimises damage to the teeth and doesn't actually stop the clenching. Until he finds a job I can't see the stress lifting, and because he does a fairly specialist role in an industry that's been decimated, it is hard. (And because he's highly qualified he can't even get a job stacking shelves, despite all the threads on here that say "just get any job"!)

pestilencalone · 03/10/2017 22:46

Judy, although it is wrong to fabricate qualifications, omitting them is probably acceptable. Hope he finds something soon, for your teeth's sake.
