Might need to investigate Doe in the Snow. Citrus and Aldehydes scream buy me. Argh!

Tried out Midnight in the Palace garden yesterdday. Nice but very subtle. Not a bad thing. Today was Lemon. Mmm. Also gave my boys a good squirt of PP Italian Cypress. They laughed themselves silly so not really sure what to make of that!

Judydreamsofhorses · 19/09/2017 19:49

I am in Mitsouko today, and my on/off lurgy is threatening again. God. Hope everyone feeling poorly is better soonest.

Badders08 · 19/09/2017 20:20

There are soooo many bugs going around school atm.....😦
Feel really grotty and Dh is away again tomorrow
And ds1 now has an infection in his bloody toe
Gargh.....

explodingkittens · 19/09/2017 21:22

It was Mrs - incredibly 'green' in the sense of smelling just like wet, sappy plant roots ripped up with the earth still clinging to them, plus those incredible Parma Violet notes over the top - I loved it. I'm going to have a rummage on eBay and see if I can track any down.

Enjoyed Tam Dao today, but SOTEvening is good old Par Amour. I needed something inoffensive for choir practice and there is something about the pencil-shavings notes in this that made it incredibly apposite for rehearsals in the school hall! When we move to rehearsals in church I'll need something that smells of hymn books and candle wax - any ideas?!

I think I'm going to have to give Mitsouko a whirl. The word in itself is so lovely.

MrsMacNally · 19/09/2017 21:37

Sure we had old books down-thread? Was it Calm perhaps?

EK - did you get to Somerset House? Avignon had a suitably churchy setting.

explodingkittens · 19/09/2017 21:46

No, I keep forgetting about SH, which is completely ridiculous because it's sort-of where I work being cagey. I must try and get over there before Friday!

BluebellGal · 19/09/2017 22:03

Mrsmacnally - I have the PS Molton Brown box set. Great value for a tenner and a lovely collection of woody, oriental and floral scents. Longevity and silage not bad - better than Jo Malone

I'm back from my trip. DH liked Tom Ford Tuscan Leather so I will be buying a bottle from perfume parlour. I tried and liked TF Santal Blush but after an hour, I couldn't smell it so wouldn't pay £200 for it!

BluebellGal · 19/09/2017 22:05

Kittens - you must try and make it to Somerset House! My favourite bit was the end and getting to smell all the separate notes

thecatfromjapan · 19/09/2017 22:43

I'm wearing Mary Greenwell's "Plum" today. I am in the middle of having a massive clear-out and came across the bottle stashed in the middle of lots of clutter - yay!

I owe my possession of this to this thread. I remember the recommendations to get down to Fragrance Shop, who were selling the Mary Greenwell's at low, low prices. So, so grateful! Grin

Christmas wish list so far...full bottles of...

E Coudray Iris Rose
Francis K Oud Satin Mood (not going to happen unless I win the lottery)
Francis K Baccarat Rouge (also not going to happen)
M&S advent calendar

Judydreamsofhorses · 19/09/2017 22:55

Hmm, Christmas. What do I want? For my birthday I got Tauer Lonestar Memories and FM Hiver, so the bar is high. I am still thinking of MMM Fireside.

kittens Heeley Cardinal is my favourite church scent.

MrsMacNally · 19/09/2017 23:56

Thanks Bluebell - need to get cracking on the DIY calendars and this looks a good bet.

Funny how we all experiences things a little differently - the parma violets never show up for me EK (which is a shame as I like them!).

Yes, that would be rather good going Green Grin. Would like to smell Dear Polly again.

Bluergh...

boldlygoingsomewhere · 20/09/2017 08:07

SOTD was chosen by my daughter this morning - 1460 Tuesday's Tokyo Spring Blossom. It is very much a scent of Spring and it feels very odd wearing it on an autumnal day. There's a mismatch between what I can smell and what I can see out the window. Grin

I haven't sorted out a Christmas list yet. I've got a few samples from 1460 Tuesday's that I'd like to order.

I caved and bought a bottle of Shazam...

BluebellGal · 20/09/2017 09:52

SOTD is E Coudray Rose Tuberose - very powerful stuff, feel like one of those vintage powder puffs. Love it!

MrsMacNally · 20/09/2017 10:01

Are you OK Badders? Is Dear Polly not for you?

I have samples and I cat smell them!
Woe woe....

Squashit · 20/09/2017 10:27

What is Lanvin Arpege like? I am looking to get something new for my mum who favours First by Van Cleef & Arpels.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 20/09/2017 11:27

Ok, so, hanging head in shame at not liking Doe in the Snow Grin (well, it wasn't that I didn't like it, it just felt a bit generically sweet and fizzy, and was put in my same olfactory box as Paris 1948, Y, Apres L'Ondee etc, or, "nice, sweet, bit fizzy somehow, slightly fruity slightly violetty" as I call it....) I went for it again this morning, giving myself 2 liberal sprays on each arm.

It is very delicate, and I can appreciate the craft that's gone into it, it's not a minger, and I will keep using the sample on not-try-too-hard days but it's still a white Yankee Candle to me. Grin Where the mossy chypre drydown is supposed to come in I know not, because I'm now 2 hours in and it still smells "cold" like Apres L'Ondee and the aforementioned YCs! Dd liked it, which hints it's sweeter than my usual choices.

GreenPolishToGo · 20/09/2017 12:33

Oh dear, oh dear, DD has her first lectures today and has woken up with a throat like "broken glass", and she is five hours away from me, cuddly cats, eiderdowns, hot water bottles etc. I have come over all mother hen - and it is no use to her at all.Sad

PIAM surely that has to be modern Y you're unenthused about? Vintage Y is a wonderful warm, green, mossy scent which always makes me think of a freshly cut lawn after a summer shower.

Don't hang your head in shame! I do like Doe in the Snow very much but I think of it as a sparkling cold peach sorbet, and not a chypre. And you are allowed not to like all 4160 Tuesdays!

I dont know what the modern Arpége is like Squash but vintage Eau Arpége (which is just Arpége at EdT strength) is a pretty, slightly soapy, aldehydic floral. A very groomed sort of scent, I think. Barbara Herman says First (which I've never smelt) is similar to Arpége so that's quite promising.

SOTD is Vol de Nuit from a bargainous Ebay fag end of a bottle. Oh it is heavenly, just like an amped-up Miss Dior (the original, not the pink identity thief), all green, mossy, leathery and powdery. I think I shall have to hunt down some more.

Get well soon everyone.Flowers
