Oh Green, poor dd! (and probably even more, poor you!) Hope she feels better soon!

Yes, I did mean new Y, a travesty indeed as so many new formulations are....and "sparkling cold peach sorbet" is a much better description of Doe than my "slightly fizzy Yankee Candle" Grin

I think I have some vintage Arpege (god, how can I have so much that I no longer know what I've got!)

Just been into the vintage box, and I do- Extrait version. I remember now getting it with (yet another) Dioressence and a Poison Edp in one of my most bargainous ebay finds.

I will pop a bit on after lunch and come back. (feeling very Nigella-esque as have made a foccaccia and a paella, mixing my Latin countries a bit but never mind)

Squashit · 20/09/2017 13:40

Thank-you 🌷

PerfumeIsAMessage · 20/09/2017 13:49

It's wonderful. As Green says, soapy leathery grande dame. I feel very sophisticated. It's reminiscent of Bandit but softer. Love it.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 20/09/2017 16:19

I'm craving a nice leathery, tobacco scent. Many years ago I ordered samples from BPAL - one of them was Highwayman . I loved it - my family thought it smelt like sweat. Grin

YouAndYourFloofyCatNose · 20/09/2017 16:33

Anyone else's MN been playing up? The app has been very buggy and doesn't show new posts for some reason Angry

The vintage Arpege is a different beast to the new one, I've had success with getting some teeny round bottles which have been gorgeous

Sorry to hear people have been ill, and green it must be very hard to have your DD poorly and away from you! Imagine how grateful she will be to be "mothered" when she comes home for holidays, she will certainly appreciate you Smile

I've had a panicky few days convinced I was going through an early menopause as thought I was having hot flushes - this morning it has dawned on me that as it's lurgy season and my immune system is faulty, it's much more likely that I'm getting a cold and running a slight fever, not menopausal Blush Grin

I have vague recollections of having a "churchy", or was it Catholic Wink, perfume discussion a few threads back, my favourite is still Fire :)

My SOTD is an unexpected delight (thank you lovely judy) in the form of a Dolce and Gabbana The One sample - for some reason I'm a bit "snobby" about D and G (see also: JPG) and don't routinely try them, but this is just lovely and perfect for Autumn, (badders I think you would like it, let me know if you've tried it?) I'm a sucker for a floriental (like that word Grin) and this is really vanillary with a background of lillies, also have a soft spot for lillies after my beloved Penhaligon's Lily love. It's very comforting for a grey and otherwise crappy day!

Hope everyone else's days are slightly less grey and crappy, and we all have comforting perfume armour to hand!

PS Still not been to TK Maxx!

PerfumeIsAMessage · 20/09/2017 18:11

PS the Arpege dry down seems somehow similar to that musky almost sweaty drydown that Obsession had in its early incarnations.

MrsMacNally · 20/09/2017 18:12

Don't worry Floof - the bottles still seem to be piling up in there.

Boldly - how about some (vintage) Cabochard? Or Habanita (on my wish list). Think you've prompted me to reach for Cabochard for the theatre tonight - unless anyone has better suggestions for something classic and bleak about death and sex?

MrsMacNally · 20/09/2017 18:19

Feel the need to pop up and mention (the shamefully discontinued) Sahara Noir in a churchy context.

Didn't someone rate a dupe?

OP posts:
boldlygoingsomewhere · 20/09/2017 18:26

Thanks,MrsMacNally. Will try and track those down.

I quite like scents usually marketed to men - love spicy, woody, leathery smells. On the other hand I also love white florals - jasmine is a favourite. I also have an amazing knack of loving perfumes which end up being discontinued...fond memories of Sicily and Theorama.

Badders08 · 20/09/2017 18:39

Floofy...i haven't tried it, no and share your view of D&G 😁 but lillies are a big no no for me 🤢
Have to say arpege sounds gorgeous...been checking it out on fragrantica and it sounds right up my street

MrsMacNally · 20/09/2017 18:42

I have a little bottle of Theorama Smile.

How about Empreinte (suedey leather with moss)? New formulation is still gorgeous and also sometimes turns up in TK Maxx for £12.99

OK - a question to flush out the hard-core 4160 aficionados: who's tried Time to Draw the Raffle Numbers? (Boldly - think notes include leather, tobacco, rubber and pastry?).

OP posts:
MrsMacNally · 20/09/2017 18:46

For jasmine and tobacco, how about Jasmin et Cigarette (or Rome 1963)?

OP posts:
Judydreamsofhorses · 20/09/2017 18:54

SOTD L'Air de Rien - perfect for a driech Wednesday.

badders hope you're okay. I am doing the up the nose squirty stuff that is supposed to banish colds, and washing my hands a lot. My work is like germ soup.

Pestilentialone · 20/09/2017 19:00

From me in March 4160's Time to draw the raffle numbers, smells of metal, light oil and continental breakfast. Not your standard perfume. Raises eyebrows at work

It smells like you are adjusting the saddle height of your bike whilst eating a marmalade croissant. One for the weekend Grin

Remember at the workshop Sarah said modern Arperge is probably a better example of an aldehyde than modern No5

Boldly Cuoio is one of my favourite leathers (despite a lively thyme opening) and is very reasonably priced. Lots of raspberry and nappa leather.

Badders08 · 20/09/2017 19:26

Judy...2 year 1s proudly came up to me yesterday and told me they had diahorea 🤔
So many coughs and sore throats at put school and that's what ds2 and i have
He is very pale poor lamb
And it's his b day weekend this weekend!
I wash my hands so much I've made them sore :(
Flu jab next eeek!

explodingkittens · 20/09/2017 20:00

Dammit, just write a long post and lost it!

Anyway, thank you for all the lovely churchy/bookish recommendations - will try to hunt out a couple. Have vowed to try to get to SH by Friday and sniff Avignon if nothing else.

SOTD - another go at Lonestar Memories. Didn't get on with this at all - Deep Heat was pretty much all I got last time, and I scrubbed - but it's a Tauer so surely I was missing something? Anyway, tried it again today, powered through the Vapo-Rub and toothpaste and ended up with the reward in the end. Think I might still have to stay home for the first hour or so of this one, though!

My only knowledge of Arpege is a description of a very glamorous yet not very nice women in a book who 'descended from the train carriage in a cloud of Arpege' - I read that years ago and have never forgotten it. It has always represented a kind of brittle, airkissy glamour, but having never actually sniffed it, that's probably totally wrong!

OCSockOrphanage · 20/09/2017 20:25

MrsMcN, the PP dupe of Sahara Noire is vairy nice indeed, but I missed the original so can't compare. It is one of my favourite scents though. Soft incense with a flutter of rose. It's very wearable for most occasions.

BluebellGal · 20/09/2017 21:04

Oh you guys, making me sad that I missed out on the 100ml of Arperge for less than £20 at T K Maxx!

Saw lots of E Coudrays in TKM for £25 (100ml) but not those on my list (Iris Rose, Rose Tuberose) so I was restrained and walked away (it was difficult, believe me, but money is too tight right now to be buying blind). They had musc et freesia, Givrine, jacinthe et rose. I do love this perfume house- their scents are so pretty. The rose Tuberose I had on today and still going 13 hours later and is now a gorgeous soft vanilla

Thanks Pest for the cuoio recommendation- I see it's a dupe for TF Tuscan leather so that's going on the Christmas list for DH. Also ordering the PP copy

Kittens - yes get yeself to Somerset house pronto - before they shut up shop. They may reduce the perfume in the gift shop and they have LADDM

BluebellGal · 20/09/2017 21:08

Anyone tried any cabotines in recent years. My mum used to wear the green flower one in the early 90s, I ordered it for her bday recently and she really likes it. Was a blast from the past. It was ubiquitous back in the day (around the same time my mates were obsessed with CK1).

The cabotines are so cheap on all beauty/ T K Maxx and there are a few different ones, including rose

BluebellGal · 20/09/2017 21:10

Excuse all my terrible typos and poor grammar- there was supposed to be a question mark in my last post. The 'green one' is just called Gres Cabotine

HaHaHmm · 20/09/2017 21:22

Another gorgeous leather (although also discontinued - sorry) is Cuir de Lancôme. It's a gorgeous, elegant, buttery suede with a good dose of jasmine. Absolutely beautiful if you can get your mitts on it.

Pestilentialone · 20/09/2017 21:27

Blue they are even cheaper at Allbeauty
Do you want a sample of Cuoio? Have ordered some sample bottles, as I have perfumes I like, but won't get through 100 mls in a sensible time. Also don't want to lug big bottles around.

Pestilentialone · 20/09/2017 21:32

Sorry Blue I have forgotten how to read.

Been thinking, we could do some swaps for our advent calendars.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 21/09/2017 05:57

Cuir Cordoba is my favourite leather but it's £££s and I only get a wee sample every so often.
I have PP Sahara Noir and Cabotine. The SH is another languishing in the not-yet-tried box.
Cabotine, to my nose, hasn't changed as much over the years as a lot of perfumes have. My flatmate wore it in 94 and when I put mine on I was immediately portkeyed back. Grin

boldlygoingsomewhere · 21/09/2017 06:45

Thank you for the tobacco/leather/jasmine recommendations. They all sound lovely and I noticed I can get a sample bottle of Jasmin et Cigarette from Les Senteurs.

MrsMacN, thank you for the reminding of Rome 1963 - I've got a sample in my stash. Have chosen it as my SOTD. I don't get the white florals for long before it settles into a smoky tobacco. Smile
