Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. If you wish join us on this thread I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

MAY/JUNE 2017: It’s summer and some of us are hourglasses (and otherwise beautifully shaped) that desperately need to bitch and moan about the severe lack of clothes available to us. Also, some of us are recovering from a ‘fine’ butchering to our hair. Don’t ask. Some of us suffer from all of the above. At least the weather is good, wear sunscreen.

Could you do like Olli and double cleanse with the LRP? I assume you use a cloth with it?

Helmish Balm has been mentioned. Muji Cleansing Oil also.

Has anyone tried Boots own botanic cleansers? here Ingredients seem pretty simple...
[Olea europaea (Olive) fruit oil, Caprylic/capric triglyceride, Glycerin, Aqua (Water), Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) seed oil, Sucrose stearate, Sucrose myristate, Betaine, Propanediol, Panthenol, Parfum (Fragrance), Dipropylene glycol, Sodium hyaluronate, Salvia sclarea (Clary) extract, Sodium benzoate, Potassium sorbate, Methyl benzoate, BHT, Tocopherol]

Though there is fragrance in there in the middle which is putting me off.

So it's the tinted one you have Pupsie, are the untinted very white then? Looking at this

Pupsiecola · 09/06/2017 18:50

That's the one I use wilting. It doesn't say tinted but it is coloured.

EnidButton · 09/06/2017 19:25

I might give TTDO another chance Pupsie I wasn't using LRP as a second cleanse when I use to use it so maybe it'll be better.

Thanks for the suggestions Wilting I'll look at those again. I didn't feel a double cleanse with the LRP took my make up off properly. Might just be me being fussy. Grin I'll give it another go too. I was put off Botanics after trying their balm in a pot. It coated my face for about 3 days. Water just sat in droplets on the top of it and it would not budge.

EnidButton · 09/06/2017 19:26

(Botanics hot cloth balm had different ingredients to that one though.)

JDSTER · 09/06/2017 19:38

Enid I also can't use LRP as sole cleanser for makeup removal, there was still makeup residue on a cloth (and I don't wear heavy makeup) I got a TTDO as a sample size recently so if you're near a counter I wonder if you could see if they have one? I like Superdrug vit E hot cloth cleanser but I think it has shea butter in the ingredients

mintmagnummm · 09/06/2017 19:45

My skin HATES Clinique ttdo balm too!

EnidButton · 09/06/2017 20:17

JD I still have quite a bit left, my EH is almost gone so will have to use it until I find an alternative, fingers crossed it was just a residue issue with TTDO and using LRP 2nd will fix it.

Mint Did it break you out? I'm hoping a second cleanse will make it useable for me.

mintmagnummm · 09/06/2017 20:34

Enid yes it broke me out and I think dehydrated my skin a bit too, I used a second cleanse after too but still got the breakouts

EnidButton · 09/06/2017 21:29

Mint Hmm, that sounds like it was with me too. There's a few nights worth of my EH left so I'll try to find an alternative before then. EH is nice but sure it's too much for my skin sometimes and the price is ridiculous for a cleanser.

olderthanyouthink · 09/06/2017 21:56

So the solution the dehydrated skin is moving the the Caribbean. (Increased risk of skin cancer and some other diseases is a side affect).

My skin hasn't felt tight, except for after going in the sea, yet anyway.

There is a bit of a mosquito problem here and I'm following the advice of some MNers taking Vit B1, garlic tablets, allergy tablets and I have DEET 50 & Avon skin so soft. I'm a bit Shock about putting DEET on my face and not sure about the Avon stuff but I doubt it will melt plastic unlike the DEET.

Lovely older. When I lived in SE Asia my skin was amazing. And also my hair and nails free so fast! Enjoy your holiday.

olderthanyouthink · 10/06/2017 00:06

Thanks pupsi. My hands seem to have puffed up so they look healthy and not like those of an old lady Grin.

EnidButton · 10/06/2017 00:37

Have a fabulous time Older!

userallusedup · 10/06/2017 11:52

Hope you're having a wonderful time older!

Enid I really struggled with cleansing balms and oils as they all made me breakout, though I must admit that was before I realised I should be using a non oil or balm for the second cleanse. I use the hylamide oil cleanser and even before I started second cleansing I had no issues with it causing breakouts.

yongnian thank you for the advice about serozinc, I'll try using it as a toner before actives.

I am living on the edge here and have started using TO 1% ret every night Shock Still no irritation or flaking or face falling off so I'll carry on for now, haven't noticed any results either but it's early days. Are there any actives that can be combined (used on the same night) with ret? I won't add anything in right now but seeing as my skin is tough as old boots very tolerant I'd like to add SA back in at some point but not sure if using it on the same night as ret would be counterproductive, do they cancel each other out?

VictoriaandBump · 10/06/2017 12:57

Enid have you tried Avene extremely gentle cleanser? I really rate it. It's got a lovely lightweight gel texture, non foaming and most importantly gets every bit of makeup off. Most of mine comes off with one cleanse, removed with a flannel. I then do a second cleanse with it and splash off with water to make sure I've got everything. Leaves no residue whatsoever. I was going to try the LRP cleanser that gets so much love on here but I've decided to stick with the Avene since it's working so well. I think it would suit most skin types, possibly not really dry skin. Mine is very reactive and blackhead prone, in the 6 months I've used it I've had none. Could be worth a try.

mintmagnummm · 10/06/2017 15:22

Victoria what moisturiser do you use with the avene cleanser?

Tantpoke · 10/06/2017 15:32

enid if i don't cleanse after EH or TTDO then I get spots. I use Murad clarifying cleanser or their Vit c one. Either of these on their own cleanse well as a single cleanse. Which I often do now.

The avene gentle cleanser never felt like it actually cleaned my face so I gave up on it.

So far TO retinoid 2% has been successful as has TO Vit C.

For the first time today I used TO niacimide followed by LRP antihelios 30spf Matt Fluide. So I shall wait to see if they cause any redness but so far so good.

Tantpoke · 10/06/2017 15:35

When I'm feeling tired I do use simple micellar water which is the kindest to my skin that I've found. I wouldn't use it every night though.

Ollivander84 · 10/06/2017 15:38

I'm here Grin
Nothing to report, skin is behaving, hair is loving curly girl method. Been quiet because recovering has been bloody hard but I have makeup on today and feel more human (photo evidence!)
No foundation as I couldn't bring myself to stretch any further than highlighter

mintmagnummm · 10/06/2017 18:43

Olli your skin is looking lovely

mintmagnummm · 10/06/2017 19:27

Enid have you tried the avene xeracalm cleansing oil? It's very bland and I think bo has approved it Grin

Pupsiecola · 10/06/2017 20:46

Tantpoke how would you describe your skin?

BaliBound · 10/06/2017 21:40

Olli your foundation free skin looks amazing Envy

I'm elasticising my hair tomorrow, to all PK users, how long do you leave it in for for optimum results? My ends have been dry for too long so I'm really excited about this and hoping for good results. Tomorrow is my birthday so this is a birthday treat to myself Grin

EnidButton · 10/06/2017 22:45

Thank you all for the suggestions. 👍🏻👍🏻 I'm on my mobile using the desktop site as mobile site is down so can't reply individually but will make a note of all of those and look into them. Good ideas. :)

Bali At least 30 minutes for me. Have left it for a couple of hours before now but don't think it made that much difference to half an hour. Is it your first time using it? Remember to rinse lots and lots before shampooing afterwards. I think some people don't like it because they don't rinse properly and it leaves a residue. Or something... rinse well anyway.

EnidButton · 10/06/2017 22:46

And happy birthday for tomorrow! 🥂✨🍰💗
