Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. If you wish join us on this thread I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

MAY/JUNE 2017: It’s summer and some of us are hourglasses (and otherwise beautifully shaped) that desperately need to bitch and moan about the severe lack of clothes available to us. Also, some of us are recovering from a ‘fine’ butchering to our hair. Don’t ask. Some of us suffer from all of the above. At least the weather is good, wear sunscreen.

Miffy I had the same trouble with face theory creams, I loved the first set so much they became my hg but the next lot was terrible and so were the next two lots of replacements they sent so I had to give up! One lot actually seperated in the bottle, u could see a layer of pure oil!

I've also had the same with the face theory moisturiser. First one, loved it. Second one, Not good at all. Such a shame!

Deathraystare · 04/08/2017 16:32

deathray OMG I had that Miners shockers palette!! Had totally forgotten about it, and about Miners range itself. I remember that Boots bluey-pink lipstick too.....grin

Yong - I was hoping to get a rise out of my mother for wearing those eyeshadows...but... she complimented me instead. Cow!

Tsmummy08 · 04/08/2017 18:30

Skinful I use the Active Formulas Vit C 15% every other morning - before whatever HA serum I'm using - it does have an odd smell but you get used to it :)

Skinfulnappies46 · 04/08/2017 19:40

Will try it in the morning then tsmummy .thanks

yongnian · 04/08/2017 22:02

I'm going to give the TO vit c 30% a try I think as vit c is a really major part of my routine for various issues. I don't mind the texture of the 23% too much and have learned to work round the balling issues, but it does still happen sometimes and I'd like to give the new formulation a try. Am a bit dubious about the light silicones though, I generally don't tolerate them well so we'll see...

miffy2 · 05/08/2017 12:59

My replacement facetheory night cream is a little better but still feels oily rather than creamy and the fragrance is nowhere near lavender.
I tried the day cream I got in my last order and that is pretty woeful too but I am not going to bother asking for a replacement at this stage. I will just move on and find something else :(

I have actually been trialling a new L'Oreal day cream, the hydra genius aloe hydrating for normal to dry skin. Apart from the fragrance (nto great but fades quickly) I am happy enough with it, it goes well with all the HA-related serums I use beforehand!

Ollivander84 · 05/08/2017 13:16

Few updates
NYX skinny mascara - great for lower lashes which is what I bought it for
Max Factor masterpiece glamour extensions - my new favourite mascara ever. Gives me amazing volume and length
Used up my makeup geek eyeshadow in vanilla bean so repurchased
Struggling with my skin again Sad just large spots on my chin for no apparent reason

mintmagnummm · 05/08/2017 14:24

Annoying miffy isn't it! I thought I'd found my holy grail day and night cream, I was so pleased! After discussing this with them they told me they had issues with a particular supplier and so the production has now changed which has changed the formulas. They are awful now in my opinion, make me oily and sporty instead of fresh and hydrated like before! I'm back to my tried and trusted dermalogica now with the avene spf.

CinderellasBroom · 05/08/2017 16:01

I think Cinders? liked the Skinceuticals sheer mineral spf 50 but wasn't it the tinted one? Can't remember, but the untinted one I got is VERY white and requires makeup to avoid the zombie look and has an odd greasy but chalky texture!! Not sure if anyone here would like it but if may try putting it on a selling group or possibly using on my or DDs body.

Yes, that was me and it was the tinted one, you're right. Worked well in sunny Spain, though my face is now rather paler than the rest of me which just had standard Nivea factor 50 sprayed on it randomly.

mintmagnummm · 06/08/2017 05:37

It is very quiet isn't it. I'm in Cyprus at mo.

JDSTER · 06/08/2017 09:51

How's the weather in Cyprus mint? We are going to Lanzarote next weekend for two weeks. I was doing a VH order so I ordered both formulas of TO vit c to give them a try. I'll be using lots of vit c on holiday under spf so I thought I may as well give it a go. Its arrived so I'll let you know.

My skincare routine has been a bit strange over the last few weeks due to the family circumstances . I've stopped using retinoid, partly in preparation for going on holiday. My skin is definitely oilier in the morning when I get up. I've got a couple of spots but that's just stress I think. Once I'm home after holiday I'm straight back on the retinoid.

I mentioned I had keratin blow dry a couple of weeks ago. I'm really pleased with it. My hair is so much easier to blow dry and I haven't needed straighteners at all (which I used to smooth at the ends). I'm having LVL lashes done again next week, before going away. I had them done previously and they didn't work but a national problem with changing the solution or something so I'm getting them redone for free.

mintmagnummm · 06/08/2017 10:07

Hi JDSTER the weather here is very hot! The humidity is also very high

miffy2 · 06/08/2017 12:29

mint yes I am gutted too as I loved the first lot...had bought two of each, one for my DD, but she didn't like them so I had two decent jars of each. A pity but at least I found a good use for the night cream. I put it on my feet last night and then socks. Voila! Gorgeous feet this morning ;)

Really loving the Nivea sun creme 50 from Japan. I have one backup and am going to stock up next month. My makeup has not sat as well over any other spf.

Ollivander84 · 06/08/2017 13:31

I was having a tidy up... my makeup geek collection! Messy and hit pan because they're used and loved Grin
Top small one - blush and eye shadows I'm using that day
Middle - all matte
Bottom - shimmer/duochrome/foiled

EnidButton · 06/08/2017 19:43

Noice! Those greens are calling out to me. Never found one quite right but think they'd be good on mainly green, hazel eyes.

That small blush palette is gorgeous.

EnidButton · 06/08/2017 19:44

Gorgeous wrong word, cute maybe? I don't know. I just like the little square pink palette.

Ollivander84 · 06/08/2017 20:04

They're all Z palettes but I like the little one for keeping out every day
Mac sumptuous olive is a gorgeous colour, that seems to suit everyone

JDSTER · 06/08/2017 21:30

Review of TO Vit C- I've tried the new 30% in silicone formula. It's much thicker than the 23% with HA formula. I think I expected it to be slightly runny. Anyway, it goes on very smoothly and left my skin slightly matte, almost like using a primer (since primers are silicone heavy it's no surprise). I found it very pleasant to use. No greasiness (the 23% although oil free leaves skin quite shiny looking) and no grittiness. I used my usual LRP toleriane moisturiser afterwards with no problems and make up went on well. I would certainly describe it as cosmetically elegant and unless you are averse to silicones it's with a try if you're looking for a well priced Vit C and didn't like the grittiness of the 23% version

Shop · 07/08/2017 07:48

I had the same issues with Facetheory creams. Absolutely loved my first, HG night cream but my second was awful, it kind of peeled off my skin. I got a replacement from Facetheory which was brilliant again but after a week it seperated so I didn't bother again.

I have found one that seems very very similar, the ingredients aren't anywhere near the same really but it feels the same on my skin and has the same effect. It's the tropic skincare moisturiser, it's got essential oils in though so wouldn't work for you I don't think mint

EnidButton · 07/08/2017 11:30

I've been up all night vomiting after having our beloved dog put to sleep late last night. So fully expecting a big chin breakout.

miffy2 · 07/08/2017 11:39

Shop that brand looks interesting. Which moisturiser are you using?
