Little things that mean Style Death

I read the other day that one of the worst things you can do style-wise is to miss out a belt loop on your trousers. I've never done this, but I do permanently have a hair bobble around my wrist. This is apparently a big NO. What other little things should I not be doing?

Plus...
leggings
jeggings
dresses over leggings

MoominFlaps · 26/05/2017 14:26

I feel I have to defend leggings here. If worn with a dress, how is it remotely different to wearing black opaque tights?

BadTasteFlump · 26/05/2017 14:33

I'm with you Moomin

Leggings can look good - if they are worn the right way (ie like thick tights rather than trousers).

MoominFlaps · 26/05/2017 14:47

Admittedly I'm defensive as I literally don't wear anything else (i.e. Not tights or jeans or trousers), but my arse is always covered.

CaulkheadUpNorf · 26/05/2017 16:39

I think it depends on the dress. They can cling differently over leggings or fit differently over your stomach as tights are thinner.

Saggingninja · 26/05/2017 17:04

High waisted jeans with legs that end above the ankle. Gives the double anti-style whammy of short legs and a massive arse.

Scrunchies.

Anything you can imagine Hyacinth Bouquet wearing - from the Mother of the Bride section in Debenhams.

WillyWonkasChocolate · 26/05/2017 18:00

When a woman bra is obviously the wrong size.

The first is when its literally when the back is so high up that its clear she needs a bigger back size. but worse it when theres like 4 boobs wobbling about because the cup size is too small.

When toe nails are not cut

Toe nails have french manicure Shock

Overly winged thick eyeliner

Wreckingball25 · 26/05/2017 18:04

My fiancé criticises my Skechers go walks but they are so comfy! Only thing that would fit when I was pregnant and easy to cycle in, too... but not the most stylish!
I do the hairband thing even though my mum tells me off (at 38)
This thread has made me smile, thanks OP!
I feel the same as lots of you about stickers on shoe heels and leggings as trousers (or worse, under a denim skirt)

Abra1d · 26/05/2017 18:09

I have a thing about black handbags. Boring in summer, I think. And too harsh for lighter fabrics.

Also dislike mulberry bags with that big new logo metal thing on them. A bit brash. The old logo metal bit was more discreet.

NotYoda · 26/05/2017 18:10

At the risk of sounding like my mum

Slouching

Feet scuffing

High heeled shoes too big

Wrong size bra (riding up at back

wearing heels you can't walk in

specialsubject · 26/05/2017 18:15

Shameless soap watcher analogy - but a lot of this can be summed up as ,
'Connie in casualty'

Ghastly spike heels, hence clompy waddling gait
Too short trousers that finish a bit below her armpits
Nylon blouses with draping and swirly sleeves

I hope the actress gets paid well !

CondensedMilkSarnies · 26/05/2017 18:18

Re what colour bra to wear under a white top. My black African friend said she wears a black bra under a white top and it doesn't show through. She showed me to prove it ! She said as I have white skin I should try a red bra under white tops.

OhMrBadger · 26/05/2017 18:19

I used to work with a woman who had the most beautiful auburn hair. She always wore it swept up in a Princess Anne style chignon and she dressed head to toe in green. On the surface she was committing many a faux pas but I thought she was bloomin' ace.

DarkAngel1984 · 26/05/2017 18:19

There is a company that sell a bangle to loop your hair bobble over to make it look like a piece of jewellery. They look pretty good

CondensedMilkSarnies · 26/05/2017 18:26

@Soupdragon - I have always pictured you as being immaculately dressed, beautifully styled hair and perfect makeup!

Pipachi · 26/05/2017 18:33

Make sure you match up your buttons with the correct buttonholes. Grin

MarvellousMonsters · 26/05/2017 18:40

ememem84 and everyone else who said 'visible/showing bra straps'

I'm a 32G. I'm not going bra-less, there are no strapless bras that hold these boobs and I'm not forgoing scrappy vests in nice weather just so my bra straps don't show! Sometimes it's not a choice!

TheFirstMrsDV · 26/05/2017 18:41

There is no point in getting upset or offended if something you do or like is mentioned on these threads.
If you ask someone what they consider unstylish they will tell you. It doesn't mean everyone goes about sneering at people wearing leggings or crocs.

I hate crocs. I think they are an abomination, but I don't give a toss if someone wears them. Just don't expect me to lie about whether I think they are stylish or not. How weird.

Brightly dyed hair is a big no no on MN. I understand some of the anti opinions. Doesn't mean it stops me dying my hair pink.

I love fashion and like discussing style. When you get right down to it though, I reckon you should wear whatever you want.

Look at the so called epitome of style...the French Woman. Lovely clothes, beautifully worn but o.m.g...how dull to look like that every day.

Youremywifenow · 26/05/2017 18:45

I see your hair bobble on the wrist and raise you not being able to find a hair bobble to tie hair back when doing make-up and reaching for the nearest thing then arriving at work to find you still have pants on your head with the label sticking out so everyone knows exactly how fat your fat arse is.

On other people, when their heel height/trouser width/foot length combination is wrong.
I can't define what the perfect formula is but I know when it is wrong
eg. if you are thin and have long slender feet, don't wear skinny jeans or leggings with flat shoes, it looks like a wetsuit and flippers.

AFierceBadRabbit · 26/05/2017 18:46

cutting the back vent - yes!

Don't agree with leggings or trainer socks. I don't wear leggings much but when a woman suits them they look fantastic and comfy. Let's face it, I've seen women who's figure looks so good in leggings it would be ridiculous to try asserting otherwise. And no, not revealing leggings either.

Trainer socks as far as i know are supposed to be partly visible. I would imagine those smaller pop sock styles are invisible. if the trainer sock didn't reach at least lower ankle the footwear can chafe the skin.

Sunshinegirls · 26/05/2017 18:46

Wearing heels. Unnatural and no one looks good in them. Freaky things

glitterglitters · 26/05/2017 18:47

@TheFirstMrsDV my Aunt lived in Paris and she said that at first French women seem chic and effortless but after a while you realise it's almost a uniform. She said British women have much more style Smile

NinonDeLenclos · 26/05/2017 18:50

Boden, Clarks, anything with animals on it, inappropriate bodycon

ememem84 · 26/05/2017 18:50

marvelous I get it. 36DD here so generally spaghetti strap tops are a no go for me unless I wear strapless bras. Which are a nightmare. I suffer from the problem re bras being huge and huge straps too.

I went off to work today with my shirt buttoned up incorrectly. Sigh. And the label sticking out the back of my jeans. Double sigh.

MrsGuyOfGisbo · 26/05/2017 18:57

All the above, plus scarves with the labels showing.
