Little things that mean Style Death

I read the other day that one of the worst things you can do style-wise is to miss out a belt loop on your trousers. I've never done this, but I do permanently have a hair bobble around my wrist. This is apparently a big NO. What other little things should I not be doing?

Soup it would be weird though, wouldn't it, if in the politics section, someone said 'I don't give a shit about who to vote for' or if in the gardeing section, someone said 'I don't give a shit about my herbaceous border.'

Like, if you don't carw about style, cool, but there's very little point in saying so. It doesn't add to the discussion.

woodhill · 26/05/2017 08:45

The invisible socks never stay on your feet though or is it just me?

hippopootamus · 26/05/2017 08:55

I am irrationally bothered by people who are otherwise smartly dressed but then stick on a garish Mountain Warehouse type jacket. (I have one, it's hideous but it's for dog walking!) Wear a grown ups coat ffs!

(DH does this).

That isn't the same. Although you could easily post in the gardening section " I don't give a shit about my herbaceous border but I need to stick an easy care plant in to block a gap" I wear clothes that make me comfortable, I don't care if someone has decided that X Y or X is "stylish" or not this year and that L M and N were stylish last year but now are not. I may, however, see something recommended in this topic that I like.

This is a topic about clothing and accessories etc. It's not about being stylish and beautiful whatever the name might suggest. It's called style, not "be stylish" and everyone's style is different. Unless you are a sheep.

SoupDragon · 26/05/2017 09:05

Things like "don't miss a belt loop" or " clean your shoes" make sense. "Dont wear " does not.

BitOutOfPractice · 26/05/2017 09:10

Every thread on S&B I've been on recently has had people on it saying they don't care about clothes and it's wrong to judge someone on their clothes, followed in the next breath by a judgey comment about those who have a different attitude to clothes and enjoy clothes

Sheeple for example. Hmm

Either you judge people on their clothes or you don't.

Trills · 26/05/2017 09:16

"Don't miss a belt loop" isn't even style advice, it's advice on how clothes work.

Make sure you match up your buttons with the correct buttonholes.

soup this whole 'caring about fashion makes you a sheep' chat is all very self congratulatory and boring.

If you don't care about fashion, why not go out in an 18th century gown and corset? Everyone follows fashion to an extent - sure, some more than others. Doesn't make them a sheep.

It's people like you that I find the judgiest, not the people who say they don't like socks you can see over trainers.

Venella · 26/05/2017 10:15

For me, it's labels sticking out.
Good hair, nice make up, flattering outfit. A pretty top, maybe semi-opaque but still 'tasteful' and then bam! Peeking through, a label with care instructions in any language including Esperanto, the size of the Union Flag over Buckingham Palace – instant style death.
Dito sticking out of bra fastenings or underpants label out of the back of trousers. (The Germans used to call this "arse fax")

What kind of bra do you wear with a strappy top so that the bra straps don't show?
I am guilty of this fashion faux pas every day - including today.
Disagree about the white bra with white top. All bras should match what you're wearing.
I'm fairly certain any kind of fitflop is a fashion faux pas. Really must find a comfortable alternative Smile

Ecclesiastes · 26/05/2017 11:01

It's not about the bra - it's about the top. If you care about such things, you don't buy a top that shows your bra. In my case, that rules out all but the most robust 'shell' tops - anything approaching a spaghetti strap would make me look like Ma Bacon.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 26/05/2017 11:09

robinia strapless bra with strappy top.

Disagree strongly about white bras with white top. Tops aren't thick enough these days, everyone will be able to see your bra! (If you have really thick tops that definitely don't show a white bra, feel free to ignore :))
A colleague did this yesterday, nice cotton white top, broderie anglaise at the front (nice and thick), thin almost sheer plain back. White bra. SO visible.

robinia · 26/05/2017 11:10

That rules out about 75% of the tops I own!

robinia · 26/05/2017 11:13

Can't do strapless bra as an everyday item - not comfortable enough.
If the top is thin enough to show the white bra it will show the flesh colour bra too. And as white is a match, then white it should be.

BitOutOfPractice · 26/05/2017 11:15

Being able to see a bra strap doesn't bother me tbh. I think that smacks a bit of Victorian laydeez must not even hint at their undergarments

And I have never ever ever found a strapless bra that is comfortable and/or supportive, and trust me I've tried

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 26/05/2017 11:19

We'll just have to agree to disagree Grin

Little things that mean Style Death
robinia · 26/05/2017 11:44

Neither is a good look as the top is too thin - that's the fashion faux pas, not the bra underneath.

MorrisZapp · 26/05/2017 11:48

You're meant to wear a nude coloured bra under white. Makes sense. Also I love nude bras as they don't turn grey.

toe walking isnt a style choice! its an anatomical problem or symptom of hypermobility!

Ive just boght some new trainers, white, what socks am i supposed to wear again?

Brogadoccio · 26/05/2017 13:03

I committed a style fail with my pale berry (faded) skinnies this morning. my son said to me, '' you look like you've got really sun burnt legs''.

I thought I looked like a finething

nina2b · 26/05/2017 14:16

The "sheeple" comments are daft. You just have to look at the sheer variety of things people dislike to know that variety must be matched when it comes to style.

I dislike:
match matchy accessories
tops with thin straps
ditto with bra straps showing - not "pretty"
skinny jeans
midi length skirts
round-toed high heels
Croydon facelift (pony tail)
faces that are dirty with shaper and silvery-freaky with highlighter...omg
straightened hair
foamy-looking trainers
feet in sandals
waterfall cardigans
"statement necklaces"
more than one earring per ear
piercings
cleavage on show - tacksville
ugly bags with lots of jangly metal and straps - designer or not
