The big 'guns' are out too, in a work appropriate fashion. He's 25, i'm 42.

papersmile · 28/06/2017 13:11

Popping back into the thread again after a lot of lurking.

This morning I received my 4160 samples, and I am really disappointed. Maybe my hopes were too high but I loved the sound of the perfumes and really liked the website and the personal touches. They looked beautiful. But (I know I've only tried 2) the ones I've tried are disappointing.

I know it's early days and I may not have helped myself by spraying one on each wrist. I will give it time but Sunshine and Pancakes actually smells unpleasant and I'm resisting washing it off.
Shazam is ok, but it reminds me of the little bottles of (cheap) perfume oils I used to buy in hippy shops when I was in my teens.

I'm obviously not an expert but they smell a bit unsophisticated (that's not quite the right word, but I can't explain it any better).

I have obviously read really good things about them here, am I alone in not being impressed so far?

Mrsmartell08 · 28/06/2017 13:19

Tbh that's why I'm not trying them...
I have been so disappointed in the PP dupes I've tried and I dislike all the lush scents (I feel they are similarly made to 4160)
Hardly any knowing left now...:(
I really need some more but I am trying to Get some on eBay

Puppylucky · 28/06/2017 13:36

Papersmile I think I agree - I have only tried What I did on my Holiday and Dirty Honey but to me they smell pleasant but somewhat unfinished and discordant - maybe I should try some of the greener ones to see if they are any different as I know I have picked some of the sweeter ones do far
Intrigued by the Avon love on this thread I bought Little Gold Dress which arrived today. First impressions were quite favourable - light and orangey but it fades quite quickly to something more sickly so the jury is still out

papersmile · 28/06/2017 14:26

Puppy - I haven't smelled any Avon perfume for about 25 years. My mum was a big fan.

I'm such a sucker for samples. I've also just ordered the nose.fr recommendations going on past perfume preferences - maybe they'll be more promising. I can't spend £150 on a bottle of perfume, but it would still be nice to smell something that I really love - even if I can't afford it.

I'll report back.

Ollivander84 · 28/06/2017 15:04

Smelt liz Earle 15 today, really liked it. Her perfumes are 20% off in boots

Mrsmartell08 · 28/06/2017 15:39

Not keen on the Liz Earle perfumes either
Avon is hit and miss...some fabulous ones they discontinued :(
Next perfumes are surprosobgkt good imo

Mrsmartell08 · 28/06/2017 15:41

I have a rule...if a perfume doesn't make me smile in the morning when I spray it...i don't keep it.
For me, perfume is about happiness and feeling safe and comforted
If a scent can't deliver that it's a failure in my eyes! 😁

VintagePerfumista · 28/06/2017 16:05

I love love love Liz Earle 1, it's a proper old fashioned citrus green, when I first smelled it years ago, when it came out, I was immediately "I want a full bottle of this now"

I still love it, so sophisticated and classy. It comes under Grande Dame for me, though it's a sharp citrus/green rather than a chypre. (I wonder if there is galbanum in there somewhere for the green?)

Her others to me are mingers with a capital M.

Love Ysatis (get hold of some old stuff, the new stuff is nice, but missing that OH MY GOD factor Grin and love the idea of hot young whippersnappers even more. (Tom Cruise in Top Gun is my whippersnapper of preference and he kept me company on my sickbed yesterday. I try not to think about him reaching my belly button in his stacked heels and being completely bonkers)

I am feeling I'm not going to like 4160s either you know.

Mrsmartell08 · 28/06/2017 16:08

I have lots of lovely scents now (thanks to this thread!)
So interesting to hear what others like and dislike
And "pink mingers" is now officially in my lexicon 🤣

HysterectomyHysteria · 28/06/2017 16:19

I'm a bit worried now.... I am waiting for my 4160 samples to arrive. I want to love them and hope that they are not the emperors new clothes.

Pestilentialone · 28/06/2017 16:22

The new guerlain is pink monger of unscrubable nature. I tried to wash it off once, I still honk. I am having to sit next to someone on the train, I ameembarrassed.
Shame I spent most the afternoon smelling of mitsouko.

Mrsmartell08 · 28/06/2017 16:24

Yep...its VILE

Mrsmartell08 · 28/06/2017 16:26

The only guerlain I like* is mitsuoko
Jo Malone scents remind me of reed diffusers....all of them 😯

*that ive tried

Auldspinster · 28/06/2017 16:48

My Ysatis is probably at least 15 years old, i bought a newer version for my mum and it is missing the wow factor.

I don't rate any post Jardins de Bagatelle Guerlains apart from a few aqua allegorias.

Hot young whippersnapper has a girlfriend so it's strictly window shopping sadly.

Radiohead at Glastonbury reawakened my 20 year pash for Ed O'Brien. I think he probably smells of something woody.

Mrsmartell08 · 28/06/2017 16:52

Dave Grohl all the way for me...
[Sigh]

Auldspinster · 28/06/2017 16:52

Not sure what Dave Grohl would smell of...

Auldspinster · 28/06/2017 16:53

I think Colin Greenwood probably smells of something niche and expensive.

Mrsmartell08 · 28/06/2017 17:08

SEX
That is what
[Brings tone of thread down]
Blush
Grin

Auldspinster · 28/06/2017 17:12

Ha! He's a bit too hairy for me, i'll stick to Ed.

FloofyCat · 28/06/2017 17:26

Dave Grohl smells of an Old Spice flanker, possibly the one with mint in (is it called Timber?). He smells beautifully clean and fresh, as do his checked shirts. I know this as he is my DH in my imaginary life although my DH is actually as sexy as Dave Grohl and also smells of mint but less hairy.

Vintage did your moggy ever make a reappearance?

Papersmile how did your 4160s dry down (can I use that as a verb or is it eyebrow twitch worthy - sorry) on you? Some of the lovely samples (thank you lovely Green) I had really took some time but the skin scents they left were beautiful. Invisible Ben was a stand out for me, gorgeous lemon sherbet!

My vintage LouLou arrived and I think it has been stored incorrectly (possibly in the 40 degrees where you are Vintage) as it was a scrubber - I never have scrubbers! ShockI am sulking now but eyeing up the Elizabeth Taylor perfumes mentioned upthread - lots of "old lady" comments on Fragratica so they sound perfect Wink Has anyone tried Violet Eyes? I love the name and in my head it must smell like Lolita Lempicka.

I'm flirting with the white line to the Pink Minger side as in an attempt to drown out the remaining sourness from my bad LouLou (I've scrubbed and scrubbed!) I am wearing BonBon. I do love this but I kind of feel like I shouldn't Grin

maplesyruppancakes · 28/06/2017 17:27

Hello, I hope you don't mind me popping in, someone suggested I post on here for a bit of advice.
I am copying and pasting as I started a thread a few days ago but only got a couple of responses.

I would like to try some new perfumes (just samples) and wondered if anyone could recommend some that I might like based on what I have enjoyed wearing in the past and also recommend a reliable seller with genuine products.

I usually wear Chanel perfumes (Allure/ Chance/ Mademoiselle). I have tried Coromandel and liked it v much. I have also worn Gucci Envy in the past (discontinued now). I do quite like floral scents in the Summer too.

I know that some of you are really knowledgeable re scents. Can anyone help please? Thank you!

Mrsmartell08 · 28/06/2017 17:55

Floofy...I only have ET diamonds and rubies and it's divine. Really amazing perfume for the price. I have smelt white diamonds and it is gorgeous - one for the white floral fans amongst you - but not for me. I keep looking at ET passion....
The bottle are so pretty too!

Mrsmartell08 · 28/06/2017 17:57

Tip;
If you have a scrubber...rub it off with baby oil.
Really works

Mrsmartell08 · 28/06/2017 18:23

Sigh...
Now I'm on fragrantica looking at ET passion and white diamonds night....
