Lovely, friendly perfume lovers thread

This thread continues from our perfumistas thread which is now full. It is a lovely and friendly thread in which we discuss all things perfume-y, and ask for tips and share opinions and SOTDs ( Scent of The Day). Do drop in- we're not cliquey and we all smell nice.

TK Maxx

no SOTD for me yet, i just can't decide because the light and the weather keeps switching from cool but bright and sunny to overcast, dark and chilly. nothing seems to fit today just right

MissBattleaxe · 17/10/2016 15:23

Baroness- I love Incense Rose and I love the churchy smell, so that one's a hit with me.

Tauer samples are getting to find. You can get them from Les Senteurs, but they are fairly small. I recently tried the Tauerville range and I was very impressed. Vanilla Flash is very good: roses and tobacco and proper non sickly vanilla.

The advantage of living in the Netherlands is that I can order direct from his website. Samples are 5 or 6 CHF a pop, or 5 for CHF31.

Chanel No 5 smells of lipstick to me.
Although to be fair, it was probably actually that my grandma's lipstick smelled of Chanel No 5. 😂

MissBattleaxe · 17/10/2016 18:10

Sorry, I forgot, I answered as if you lived in the UK.

Funnily enough, I am trying Chanel no 5 l'eau today and it's lovely. Much nicer than No 5.

I did grin to myself as it was you who told me I'd be able to order direct in the first place.
However, there are lots of posters on this thread! Grin

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 17/10/2016 19:55

Interesting about No 5. I love it but more because my mum wore it for going out and so will forever be glamorous and sophisticated and just smells of 'perfume' to me.
Sotd is pp noir amber (another jo Malone copy). Prob more soapy than real thing but warm. However there's a lingering note I'm not sure about. I keep thinking I've got it then I've missed it again. But I hear you baroness roll- on is pretty rough on the skin and I like to spray over my hair too.
calmina & fanny I love madonna truth or dare too. DH finds it overwhelming. Bet madonna would eat him for breakfast!

Jmangel · 17/10/2016 22:08

A bit overwhelmed by all this chat as don't recognise the majority of these names but wondering if you perfume aficionados can help me out. I've just finished a bottle of NR for her EDT which I love for autumn/winter but wondering if there's anything with similar musky base notes but with a grander maybe chypre type opening - think I'm looking for a cross between Maitresse and NR - does it exist? Want good silage and longevity too - too much to ask?
Also have always wanted to know where to get samples - which sites and are they free?

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 18/10/2016 09:14

I like Chanel 5 well enough, but then I'm a vintage aldehyde and chypre kind of girl...I do think there's an inordinate amount of snobbery about it though, and it's nothing extraordinary. So many woman "only ever wear" Chanel 5 like they think it is the be-all and end-all.

I am in Fidji this morning, not vintage, so nice enough for an early morning. There's a bit of a L' Air du Temps twang to it, but it's less sweet.

Samples- the only free ones I've ever found are courtesy of latestfreestuff.co.uk and tend to be the latest pink sugary flowery flanker type. I invariably have a squirt, scream "what fresh pink hell is this" and give it to dd. You can buy samples from Scent Samples, Perfumed Court (extortionate prices IMO) Aus Liebe zum Duft (in Germany, but far more reasonable per ml than PC) Nose.fr will send you 6 for about 10 euro iirc. (I might have another set from them...they introduced me to the wonderful Cuir Cordoba after all!) I am sure there are others, but I'm not in the UK so none of them send to me!

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 18/10/2016 09:15

Meant to say IMO if we are talking Chanel 5 "grand dame" stuff, then Dior has the edge by a mile on Chanel. Apart from 19 which is a thing of everlasting gorgeousness, give me Dioressence, Miss Dior or Diorella any day of the week.

FannyWincham · 18/10/2016 10:03

I am completely devoted to No 5 and I rather hate that it is so ubiquitous. I want to be able to tell everyone that even though I am wearing No 5 it's because I've tried hundreds of others and always come back to it, and not because DH made an unimaginative eleventh-hour purchase one Christmas Eve... Incidentally, if you've only tried the EDT or EDP then the parfum is a revelation. The jasmine is much clearer IMHO.

BaronessBomburst · 18/10/2016 12:56

SOTD is vintage Arpege.
Only EDT 6 hours ago so it's faded. :(

OCSockOrphanage · 18/10/2016 15:06

Encre Noire (masculine version) is SoTD because I just received 3ml. It's softer than I remembered, but that may be the weather, but very vetiver heavy.

And I got the same amount of something new, randomly, which I do not like. It was described as unisex and late night jazzy and it is discordant in the extreme, the scent equivalent of a Sun Ra jam session at considerable length and high volume. When I am feeling brave, or want to be left alone, I may try it again.

lemonzest123 · 18/10/2016 15:08

Snagged 100ml of CK1 for £18.50 in Boots today...mmmmm I smell like the 90s

Judydreamsofhorses · 18/10/2016 16:00

SOTD is Miller Harris L'Air de Rien, yesterday was Heeley Hippie Rose.

OCSockOrphanage · 18/10/2016 20:27

Love Hippie Rose, that was my SoTD yesterday too. Seemed seasonal.

ReadyToSignOff · 19/10/2016 10:14

My SOTD is very interesting and has conjured up a scene in my head! I am trudging the streets on a cold, wet Paris evening and take a wrong turn off the map... looking for refuge and advice I am drawn to the window of a tiny antiques shop that is warmly lit by hanging lanterns, flickering candelabra and a glowing fire in the marble fireplace on the far wall. I push open the black door and I am initially hit by the overwhelming scent of beeswax and very old, very expensive wood furniture. An elegant lady in a black dress puts down the sugar plum she has been eating and places another log on the fire. It smokes and splutters as she turns to me with an arched eyebrow, looks me up and down and demands, "Oui?".
BTW that was meant to be tongue in cheek, but I can smell those notes (and more)! Anyone like to have a guess which perfume I am wearing?

OCSockOrphanage · 19/10/2016 12:18

Ambre Nue this morning, and it's warm and smooth and very lovely for an autumnal day.

By accident, I pulled the top off a mini-bottle of La Chasse aux Papillons a few minutes ago, just to smell it because it's not something I know, and I have splashed it (EDP naturally) over my hands. The name is pretty and seductive, and I did expect a floral, just not buddleia!

Calminaqualm · 19/10/2016 12:27

Thenlater I've tested Angel to see if it's similar to Madonna's Truth or Dare Naked, but it's completely different, even though they seem to share some of the same notes. On me Angel is loud, bright and in-your-face, with a burnt sugar note. I like the dry down but it takes too long to get there. TDN smells a bit like brandy to start, then there is dark chocolate, caramel, vanilla and white flowers with a tiny bit of mint. It's a comforting, enveloping smell, just right for an autumn day.

My SOTD is The Lion Cupboard (4160Tuesdays). This smells like your grandad's antique oak cupboard, well-polished over the years with lavender wax, and infused with his tobacco. There are herby and citrus hints, but they're very faint. I really enjoy this, but it's not one to wear to work!

soyvanillalatte · 19/10/2016 12:43

SOTD for me is Clinique Happy - because I have been binge watching legally blonde clips

No idea but I'm enjoying the game!

ManonLescaut · 19/10/2016 16:36

Currently loving Chanel Cristalle Eau Verte.

OCSockOrphanage · 19/10/2016 20:26

ReadyTo ask the question: so what was it? Perfume of a Lady? Fire?

ReadyToSignOff · 19/10/2016 21:16

It was Chanel Sycomore Smile - I thought that it was popular amongst you perfumista types! I managed to buy a teeny tiny sample on eBay and my word it is powerful stuff Shock. I enjoyed it - it's very sophisticated and a bit challenging, but I'm not sure how well it will go down in my local pub or at school!

OCSockOrphanage · 19/10/2016 21:39

It is well liked here, but I've only sniffed it in an airport (I liked i t a lot)! I would probably not buy more than 3-5 ml, (an infrequent squirt) because I don't really want a signature. I love being able to find a perfect scent for today, from a choice of a hundred or more. Have rather stopped thinking about what other people might like to smell on me. Don't mean to disparage but perfume has become very abstract. It's rarely emotional anymore, except when it hits me in the gut, and not much does.
