Lovely, friendly perfume lovers thread

MissBattleaxe · 13/07/2016 22:26

This thread continues from our perfumistas thread which is now full. It is a lovely and friendly thread in which we discuss all things perfume-y, and ask for tips and share opinions and SOTDs ( Scent of The Day). Do drop in- we're not cliquey and we all smell nice.

I have to say, I really loathe Black Opium. i find it sickly, overly sweet and a massive disappointment.

Aromatics Elixir and Youth dew are classics though!

Thanks MissB - it sounds like Black Opium isn't worth bothering about then... why have they messed about with a classic?

MissBattleaxe · 11/10/2016 10:42

Indeed. It couldn't be further from Opium if it tried.

Badders123 · 11/10/2016 11:28

Oh god not black opium...it's hideous and I love original opium!

Badders123 · 11/10/2016 11:29

I will be very interested to hear what you have to say about youth dew and nahema! 😀

Cockblocktopus · 11/10/2016 11:39

I adore Cafe Rose but it just doesn't last long enough on me at all. Not long enough to bother buying a FB.

I also love Sycomore - woody, sexy and sniffable (sorry I'm rubbish at real perfume words Blush). It took me a little time to figure out if I love it but I do. Can't find a good decant though.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 11/10/2016 12:05

Agree re: Black.Opium. Bleargh.
Love Sycomore and Aromatics. Will have a FB of AE at some point, but Perfume Parlour Sycomore (which is v nice) will have to suffice on that front!

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 11/10/2016 12:06

There is an etsy seller in Scotland iirc with Sycomore decants.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 11/10/2016 12:08

Keeping in theme, Sotd, Bel Respiro. Nice enough, very light, have already had to reapply once. My decant isn't going to go far!
It's nice, fresh, goes a bit sweet after a bit, I like my fresh greens to stay sharp, so luckily, won't be needing a £200 bottle!

teta · 11/10/2016 13:24

Another one who hates Black Opium with a passion.
Sotd is Montale's Crystal Flowers - beautiful musky Roses and Lily with a touch of Ambergris for depth.
Anyone know Mona di Orio perfumes?I've just ordered some sample sets from her website.I'm intrigued by her Tuberose and Rose perfumes.

Cockblocktopus · 11/10/2016 14:38

It looks like Sycomore has been discontinued! Is that right?

teta · 11/10/2016 14:51

I think they're changing from EDT to EDP,hence a change in price and the more cynical are saying perhaps a reformulation. Its still available online on the USA site.

PinkissimoAndPearls · 11/10/2016 14:54

I need advice from you knowledgable people. I need a bit of cheering up but can't afford to splash £££ at the moment. I was thinking of just getting something from Perfume Parlour, rather than a teeny weeny sample/decant which I love but runs out quickly (as I would usually do!).

Would anyone be able to recommend one of their good ones? My 5 favourite "real" perfumes are (well, at the moment) Chanel no 5 Eau Premiere (I tried the PParlour one, didn't like it) Paloma Picasso, Fire, Gloria by Cacharel (discontinued, boo) and original Anais Anais which I wear for bed.

I would like something different but cheap. I have been looking at almondy perfumes and the next on my "Tried decant and save up for FB" list is Kenzo Amour - has anyone tried the Perfume Parlour version of this, or is there another one anyone can recommend?

Any advice gratefully received. I need a bit of therapeutic wrist sniffing I think.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 11/10/2016 15:58

I haven't tried that one, but the Paloma Picasso one is good.

Seriously disappointed now in Bel Respiro. There is avery very faint trace left on my hand, but that's it. I'm not reapplying a third time. I shall out something brash and in your face on in a bit (tutoring two 13 yr old boys, need 'em stunned!)

Zxyzoey31 · 11/10/2016 20:16

Hello Ladies
I love Rose perfume but struggle to find one strong enough and not powdery on me. I have seen the great recommendations about and I tried Rose Goldea by Bvlgari on Monday and I thought it was pretty good. Has anybody any thoughts on it?
The lady at the counter was trying to tell me that Chloe had the best rose perfumes but most of those just make me feel sick. I am extremely fussy about perfumes and smells!

lasttimeround · 11/10/2016 22:19

Mmmm youth dew - I've been wearing this to bed recently. It's so rich and balsamy. Love it.

ReadyToSignOff · 11/10/2016 22:29

Ha ha ThenLater - I'm a tutor too! One of my pupils started sneezing this evening so I asked her if she had a cold, but she said 'no'. Ah... that will be my liberally applied perfume then Blush

Judydreamsofhorses · 11/10/2016 22:48

I've totally fallen off this thread, but SOTD was Liz Earle number 15. i've been thinking of a top ten, but it is so hard - I have different favourites at different times of the year. Currently L'Air de Rien and Mitsouko are in heavy rotation, and Chanel 19 always.

Cockblocktopus · 12/10/2016 06:45

Yes! First Perfumed Court order arrived.

Hermes sur la nil and Hermes Mediterranee.

Love the creamy fig and ceder in Med. Less keen on sur la nil. It's soft and pretty but not exactly me.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 12/10/2016 08:34

Hello zyxzoey! Welcome to the perfumed thread! If you scroll back a few posts there is a list of rose perfumes. My own favourite is original Paris but I'm in a minority there!

I wore Apres L'Ondee for the tutoring in the end, and am starting to "get" the difference between it and L'Heure Bleue. As I often do, I have an issue with its name though, Grin I imagined something much lighter and fresher from the name. It's v nice though.

In Diorella today. Absolutely shattered, SpuddyCat didn't come home- having recently moved house he is only just becoming an outside-when-he-feels-like-it cat as we were on 2nd floor before so it wasn't an option, so daft old me spends all night getting up and looking for him.

teta · 12/10/2016 08:55

I love original Paris too Then later.Someone on Fragantica sent me a decant of Vintage edt which actually smells as potent as the current EDP.I don't rate all the flankers though.I gave my Premieres to my 12 year old dd as it was a very generic but pretty Rose.
SOTD is Jo Malones Nutmeg and Ginger - warming and comforting on a murky misty morning.I layer Ginger Fraiche by Roger and Gallet over it for a fresh, spicy kick as well.

ReadyToSignOff · 12/10/2016 10:40

I'm starting to feel as if I've been missing out sticking with the same perfume (mostly) for a decade or so Sad thanks for rescuing me MissBattleaxe and everyone else on the thread Star
I've just ordered three samples from Scent Samples (Nahema - double dose of!, Fille de Berlin and Flowerbomb Rose Explosion) for just over £10 including delivery, which doesn't seem too bad but I haven't seen the size of them yet. I'm hoping to find most of my wish list in Harvey Nichols in a couple of weeks (I won't be buying, just trying!).
Also decanted some Eden into a handbag spray and rediscovered my old bottle of Dune. I forgot how much I used to love it! SOTD is my PP copy of Karma as there is a tiny bit of sun today, which is nice but it has been diluted by the Eden aroma and now I wish I was wearing that!

Cockblocktopus · 12/10/2016 11:39

Ready I feel the same which is why I'm going a bit perfumed court mad

Any sight of spuddy cat thelater? We have a small kitten and I'm dreading her being out when she's older. We live in a house without air con so come summer we will have to keep everything open or we will melt. And today was 33 so winter summer is coming!

teta · 12/10/2016 12:22

There is a very well written article in Basenotes on Women's top ten designer perfumes every woman should try.Plus lots of links to niches.Worth a read.

SecondSunrise · 12/10/2016 13:04

Pinkissimo Acqua di Parma - Mandorlo di Sicilia is a fairly sweet almond biscuit scent, with a tinge of orange. I've tried the Perfume Parlour version next to the original and I have to say I preferred the PP version. Very good longevity too.
