Lovely, friendly perfume lovers thread

MissBattleaxe · 13/07/2016 22:26

This thread continues from our perfumistas thread which is now full. It is a lovely and friendly thread in which we discuss all things perfume-y, and ask for tips and share opinions and SOTDs ( Scent of The Day). Do drop in- we're not cliquey and we all smell nice.

Just did an order via perfumed court for gypsy water, cafe rose, grace coddington, lipstick rose and some jadore for mum.

Think I will pop to shops tomorrow and get baccarat rouge. The cost of a tester was huuuuuge so I think I'm going to just bite the bullet and buy one.

Cockblocktopus · 24/09/2016 03:41

Oh and l'heure bleue! Blush and a bit Grin

The other perfume I want to get my mits on is Chanel Sycamore but I haven't found a good decant yet and don't want a non spray tester.

teta · 24/09/2016 08:41

Cockblocktopus I just do sample orders from the MFK website.I love Amyris Femme too and really want to try the new Petit Matin and Grand Soir. You order in blocks of 4.Baccarat Rouge is so powerful a sample lasts quite a few wears.A bottle is 140 euros I think ,but they're now doing a set of refills for less than that .I don't think I wear it enough to justify a bottle tbw.

Hello Glovebug, tell us what your current favourites are and we can make some suggestions!

Corrigan- yes the VV is a vintage one, I try to get "originals" or as near as I can..I believe there have been 2 reformulations which Tanya/Luca say are lovely enough, but not a patch on the original. It's a curious perfume- it seems to be back-to-front to me...it starts off deep and wet-green-mossy and then somehow becomes lighter and fresher. Normally greens seem to do the opposite. There are a few of the same mini-mini-bottles that I got on ebay, especially ebay.fr (I paid 20 something euro for the VV and a similar sized (I think possibly 3 ml, maybe only 2 though) of Fracas)

I have a Perfume Parlour version of Sycomore. It is very good for a dupe, as most of theirs have proved to be. The only one where I went "what in the name of all that is holy is this????" was Chanel 19. I'll just keep on with my FBs of the original for that.

MissBattleaxe · 24/09/2016 09:14

Hi Glovebug and welcome!

Assuming you're in the UK, here's how I get samples:

My favourite place for samples is The Perfume Society. They send you a mixed box of samples- a new one comes out every few weeks and you order as and when. You can subscribe to the Perfume Society for £25 a year which gets you a discount, or the boxes cost 17.50 each if you don't subscribe. They are beautifully presented, with smelling notes, and usually a beauty treat like hand cream or skin elixir. I think they make amazing gifts too.

I also subscribe to the quarterly Fragrance shop Discovery Club. Every 3 months they send you a Discovery Box of 6 or more samples- usually new releases or flankers. This costs £5 and you can cancel any time. I think the September is due about now.

I also recommend sample services from 4160 Tuesdays, Pell Wall Perfumes ( a little niche house in Shropshire), Papillon and Les Senteurs.

Samples are increasingly hard to get over the counter, but they seem to be on ebay a lot ( coincidence?) I've always had good results from ebay and would recommend that too.

Ive got the pp version of sycamore too, got the spray which seems to last better on me.
Today's scent is a carefully rationed squirt of Lush Ginger. It's got so many memories for me (from cosmetics to go it was my one of my 90s scents) didn't feel flowery or deep today so it suits my mood.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 24/09/2016 09:20

Oh, I forgot to mention that I accidentally bought decants of Apres L'Ondee, Cuir de Russie and Bel Respiro from Etsy yesterday afternoon.

I need to stop now for September. Ooooh look! It's nearly October! Grin

MsRinky · 24/09/2016 13:37

SOTD is Maroc Pour Elle. God, I love it, it smells exactly of the kind of hippy shop I used to frequent in my youth, with pulses out the front, incense out the back and even further round the back if you knew the right people, a waft of black hash. It is giving me a powerful urge to skin up.

OCSockOrphanage · 24/09/2016 14:30

Ambre Russe (PdEmpire) might tick the box FalseInsight. It's a big boozy amber, and lasts a long time, so not a lady-like one for an office. They used to offer a very decent sample set containing most of their range (which has some vairy lovely scents, riffing on lots of notes) but it wasn't offered the last time I looked. Hoping they will bring it back; I love Eau Suave for early summer.

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 24/09/2016 15:26

Welcome new people and yay for more suggestions. I love my perfume society boxes. Samples are usually generous enough for 3 days so you get a good trial. cockblock (awesome name) I've never tried that sample service but will.
falseinsight I'm eager to try the Jo Malone Amber cologne as heard good things. Perhaps that's worth a try.
I was tk maxx yesterday and was so tempted by a Hermes Mediteranean one, jardin de Mediteranean I think. But £59 so didn't want to risk a dud. Anyone tried it?

MissBattleaxe · 24/09/2016 15:42

AnotherPinkie- You might mean Hermes Un Jardin en Mediterranee by Jean Claude Ellena. It is superb, but personally, I wouldn't spend £59 on a blind buy either, so you made the right decision, I reckon.

It's all so subjective anyway and if you don't like fig you might not like it at all.

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 24/09/2016 16:40

Thanks missbattleaxe I do like fig so I wonder?!? I love body shop fig as someone mentioned before but never lasts. But £60 to not be sure.......

thisfalseinsight · 24/09/2016 18:31

Thanks OCSock and PinkiePie - will check those out!

SheStoodInTheStorm · 24/09/2016 23:15

I lost this thread for a while!

Thanks to those who suggested Lovely - I tried again and it is close to my beloved discontinued sob perfume. The one I tried originally was the "sheer" version.

Even better, is only £19.50 in Boots at the mo! I don't find it lasts particularly well but you can't have everything!

Cockblocktopus · 25/09/2016 00:22

Ohhhh I also like fig and the non lasting body shop fig...

teta · 25/09/2016 14:43

Following the Fig theme today as I couldn't decide on a perfume this morning. So Vertine it was today by Friedemodin.Normally I can't get past the really strong minty start ,but the cooler day neutralised this and emphasised the milky ,woody fig and Rose. Its a wonderful autumnal scent.

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 25/09/2016 16:31

teta that sounds lovely and something else I've never heard of! I do love mint too......
cockblock I hear you. Gorgeous smell but gone in seconds.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 25/09/2016 16:45

Humph.

Just tried to buy a 10ml vintage bottle of Diorella on ebay and had a virtual smack on the wrist telling me I'm not allowed, legal restrictions bla bla. A quick google tells me that companies like Dior, Guerlain and others have been trying to stop people selling their stuff on ebay etc (esp when not new- I suppose because opened bottles have more chance of who-knows-what having been poured into them) Anyone had this happen to them? I bought some Dioressence from ebay over the summer with no problems....fragrantica says if the seller changes the title to either exclude the brand or offer it as new, then the sale goes through.

It's the internet's way of telling me to stop spending isn't it?

(on another note- SoTD is Perfume Parlour's Rive Gauche, more like the original than the original Grin)

MsRinky · 25/09/2016 17:28

Snap teta I am also wearing Vertine today!

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 25/09/2016 18:46

The seller kindly removed the word Diorella and the sale went through!

OCSockOrphanage · 26/09/2016 20:43

Perfumistas... page three. This is a bump post as I didn't wear scent today or yesterday. Why waste it when you are trying to tame the garden and the ivy creeping over everything? Gardening gloves, followed by a damn good scrub with a nailbrush and Crabtree & Evelyn's Pumice. Which is nicely herbal.

I shall do better tomorrow!

teta · 27/09/2016 08:38

Ormonde Jayne Frangipani today.I love Tropical flowers when the weather starts getting cooler.Rosee de Nuit in bed last night.Spicy, warming and woody for a chilly night.
MsRinky did you enjoy your Vertine?
Thenlater, the Internet telling you to stop spending didn't work ? Grin

Vintage Fidji today. Oh, I do feel lovely and fresh and sophisticated again!

Something reminiscent of L'Air du Temps but not as sweet in it.

Teta- I am not going to even look at my daily ebay search emails (which consist of Lanvin, Balmain, Dior+ insert name of vintages etc etc, decant, old perfume, used perfume etc etc etc) for 2 weeks. #famouslastwords Grin

Cockblocktopus · 27/09/2016 09:14

Baccarat rouge today yes I went and bought it

Delicious. Sweet and slightly minty now.

OCSockOrphanage · 27/09/2016 09:59

Now that I've scrubbed the mud from under my nails, I can think perfume. Settled on Equistrius, elegant orris, for a grey autumn day.
