Lovely, friendly perfume lovers thread

MissBattleaxe · 13/07/2016 22:26

This thread continues from our perfumistas thread which is now full. It is a lovely and friendly thread in which we discuss all things perfume-y, and ask for tips and share opinions and SOTDs ( Scent of The Day). Do drop in- we're not cliquey and we all smell nice.

Ooh, teen scents! Let's see. Pinkie, you have reminded me that I also had Exclamation (I can still hear the song from the advert - make a statement without saying a word...).

I was a teen in the late 90s and consequently came of fragrance age in the world of CKOne etc. My first proper perfume, bought on holiday when I was about 14, was Ralph Lauren Polo Sport for women. It was a very sharp, crisp green melon as I recall. My best friend had Tommy Girl, which I loved, and CKBe. I remember them all being very fresh and clean and not in the least bit sexy, which I suppose made them totally appropriate for young teens!

Then when I was about 16 I started wearing Cerruti 1881. I loved it, even after my physics teacher recognised it and told me that his wife wore it. It's very cheap these days and I keep meaning to repurchase it for nostalgia's sake. Another girl in my class also wore it and she has since very sadly died. It would be nice to remember her, too.

Re: l'air du temps - any strong opinions between edt and edp?

lasttimeround · 21/09/2016 08:52

So many posts about l'air du temps - slightly envious as it stinks and screeches on me. Lovely on the tester and for first minute on skin and then it goes eeeeeek and reeks. I so wonder what that is.

lasttimeround · 21/09/2016 08:56

Lastgirl-I so understand that feeling of the world being drab and bleak. I was often denied the things I craved as a child and teen as frivolous. Or given other options which I didn't like snd would be called ungrateful if I said I would have preferred something else. It felt like such an erasure of myself and the sense of my desires and wants being unacceptable in ways I couldn't understand. I'm also happily doing things very differently with my own child. Flowers

teta · 21/09/2016 10:23

I just got a massive sample box this morning and have tried lots.I now feel sick and headachey.Le maroc pour Elle is pretty polarising but fascinating.Smells like a Chinese medicine Shop or like a Witches Brew. With a undercurrent of Wing of Bat and eye of Newt and Treacle to disguise the unpleasant bits.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 21/09/2016 15:44

I have just had a break from unpacking boxes and spent half an hour with Luca Turin and Tanya Sanchez. And bought a weeny sample of 31 Rue de Cambon and squirted myself with the beautiful thing that is Cuir de Cordoba. It makes me want to bury my face in old handbags which smell powdery though, rather than burying my head in boxes of saucepans. Hmm.

SlinkyVagabond · 21/09/2016 18:07

Oo teta where was the sample box from? I've a hankering to do something totally frivolous.

OCSockOrphanage · 22/09/2016 12:19

Jardin sur le Nil today but it isn't really right for the day. This morning was lovely, all bright, and it was fine then; now it's gone cloudy. However, my objective of bumping the thread will succeed. We had slipped to page two.

I should really have worn something more autumnal given the date... tomorrow.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 22/09/2016 12:40

Tell me about Jardin sur le Nil OC...it is on my list with all the other "Jardin" fragrances.

I went for 1987 Eau de Gucci. An odd one, in that though I know I wore it for a solid 4-5 months in 87, there are no perfume memories. It is simply sweetly fresh and settles quickly into powdery and somewhat vague. Dunno why it doesn't move me, 87 was an excellent year, you'd think there'd be some frisson of nostalgia!

OCSockOrphanage · 22/09/2016 13:44

ThenLater, the dominant note is unripened mango, over the typically ethereal well blended Jean-Claude Ellena green tea notes. It is light and summery, not sweet or cloying, and is refreshing in hot weather. I'm less keen on the apres le Mousson (spicier) or sur le Toit (spring blossoms, apple mainly) and I have only sampled the Monsieur Li version at the airport a few weeks ago. That is somehow oriental (osmanthus? Kaffir lime leaf and lemongrass?). Must confess to a weakness for Hermes scents, going back to the 1970s original Amazone.

Has your move gone well? Your packet hasn't landed yet (I name changed a few weeks ago!)

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 22/09/2016 15:06

The move is going..... Just had two plumbers hoiking a new toilet bowl into the house. I hate having to deal with people doing jobs in the house so hid away on the laptop and accidentally bought a half bottle of Chance for 12 euro! No idea from the pic or description which one, but at free postage thought I may as well have a punt. Dd likes all of them anyway. Ebay.it can be quite good for half bottles and old stuff, once you've waded through the Paco Rabanne/Lady Gaga/sleb scents. This seller looked like someone just getting rid of their no longer loved stuff.

Packages usually take about 7-10 days so hopefully you will have it before the weekend or just after!

needastrongone · 22/09/2016 16:59

SJP Lovely arrived today. Thanks to whoever recommended this, it's super, although I've only had a test so far.

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 22/09/2016 19:54

How interesting lasttime and lastgirl I too was discouraged from frivolous things although never cruelly. I even find myself excusing beauty purchases now as an adult when we really all deserve all the lovely things don't we?
Sotd lady vengeance. It sounded a bit over powering but just the ticket for a 24hr shift. Now need bath with aromatherapy associates oil. Best things ever.
House smells are usually reed diffusers and the rituals one (hamman I think) is wonderful. And bath and body works candles which I think are the best in the world. Will bring to Scentstock. Poncho too!
thenlater feel your moving pain. So stressful.

OCSockOrphanage · 22/09/2016 20:35

Don't know if this is good or bad (and it should also be in property). We moved here 20 odd years ago, and did what was essential, but this year we have had to do some big maintenance, so I have had plasterers, glaziers, painters and decorators, and tomorrow it's carpet fitters, in an endless stream, since February. Once the new render is fully painted, I start on the interior windows, for a full clean and eggshell. Scent... probably White Spirit. Believe it or not, there is a new JHaG scent called just that, without a whiff of turps. I wasn't keen on first sniff and once I have painted miles of skirting board, window frame and internal door, I may like it even less. Scentstock cannot come soon enough!

Seriously, do you all think it would be worth asking the Port Eliot Festival organisers the question? I might be able to find someone who knows the people. Cornwall, late July is when it happens.

Cockblocktopus · 23/09/2016 06:17

Hello

Hope you don't mind me popping in. Bought Tom Ford Soleil Blanc today as we are heading into summer and is just the kind of warm vibe I've been looking for.

Also got a tester for cafe rose which I love but lasts about two minutes on me.

Also tried the body shop fig scent which sadly has two minutes lasting power but I loved.

Finally would love thoughts on the Grace Coddington Grace scent and Baccarat. Annoyingly they both went on the same arm and I'm now not sure if they have mingled and I can't tell which I prefer! I keep getting gusts of deliciousness though Smile

teta · 23/09/2016 11:26

Are you talking about Mfk's Baccarat Rouge Cockblock? It's the one with the Candyfloss Accord overlying the salty, woody Ambergris.I love it,but its definitely a cooler weather perfume for me.My kids think it smells delicious and intriguing though.I've never tried the Grace Coddington perfume sadly but have you looked up the notes in Fragantica?
Sotd is again Tiare by Ormonde Jayne.I'm still on my Summer Greens even though it's cold in the morning. But it always seems to warm up later in the Sun.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 23/09/2016 11:50

My Vent Vert and Fracas have arrived from France. What things of beauty. So despite being surrounded by plumbers bending over my toilets exposing their builders' bottoms (I thought I'd share that image with you all) I shall waft around feeling like a sassy crisp grande dame. They are very widgy bottles and now I'm going to have to go and source more!

Cockblocktopus · 23/09/2016 12:14

Teta, yes Baccarat rouge. Interesting that your kids love it. I've never tried or loved such a sweet pefume before but they're is something about it.

Grace Coddington is meant to be top note is peach blossom; middle note is moroccan rose; base notes are white musk and amber. I had a sniff of the tester and it's definitely faded so it's the Baccarat Rouge for me I think!

Cockblocktopus · 23/09/2016 12:18

Sorry, grammar fail through pasting from t'web!

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 23/09/2016 13:25

Aaaaargh. Just found a squillion decants on Etsy. Many US based, but some are UK/Europe.

I really mustn't, but am prepared to live vicariously through everyone else. Prices don't seem too bad, (esp cf Perfumed Court etc)

OCSockOrphanage · 23/09/2016 16:44

Perfumed Court is very reliable. I have had most of my decants from them over the years, and they take about 10-14 days for delivery to Europe.

The stories for the 4160 Tuesdays Mysteries arrived today, with a quick resume of the four scents on the back cover. I was "inspired" by the description of Flora Psychedelica (which I quite liked in the summer), but it has not been the best choice. I wanted something to smell gorgeous in the autumn breeze; not this .

So I've spritzed some Citizen Queen over the top and will sniff in half an hour.

thisfalseinsight · 23/09/2016 21:18

Hello lovely perfumistas! I have to admit that I've been trying to avoid this thread as I've been trying to stop being so spendy on perfume, and everything always sounds so lovely that I've been buying far too many samples! Couldn't stay away, though...at the moment, I'm looking for a good warm amber to wear as it's getting cooler. I have a sample of E Coudray's Ambre et Vanille that's very close to what I am looking for - a very powdery amber with a bit of sweetness (although I think I like this particular amber because it feels very single-note to me). Does anyone have any recommendations for other fairly linear ambers I might check out?

SlinkyVagabond · 23/09/2016 21:30

Oh Socks, me and dd went to Edinburgh and Harvey nicks. Had to drag her round perfume dept where we met the most amazing grande dame in charge of the niche scents (lbd, whacky but stylish haircut) who was telling me all about White Spirit and that the guy who runs JHaG was coming in for a promo visit the week after.
I wanted deep florals today so Sotd was Sublime, big tuberose. Suited the pending Autumn.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 23/09/2016 22:48

Lasttime I can understand my parents....my dad was a plant fitter in a low wage and my mum brought up six children using a crappy twintub, an oven that barely worked and she was a carer for my granny and great aunt as well!!

BUT.....we really had nothing nice! No deodorant, perfume, clothes....NOTHING! I had a bath every few months - I was so dirty you could see the streaks in my arms and neck! BUT this was back in the early eighties so I know this was normal enough - at least in big Irish working class families like mine. I am just so glad I can do better for my children.

CorrigansDoorKnob · 24/09/2016 02:40

Ooo ThenLaterWhenItGotDark is your Vent Vert a vintage one? I had a tiny little tester of that and threw it away when I moved house and my mum accused me of being a hoarder. I've regretted it ever since. I've found a seller on ebay from USA who has some, but it will be about AUD100 to have it posted and I'm not sure its worth it. Convince me..

GloveBug · 24/09/2016 03:20

I've just come across this thread. Haven't had chance to read it all. All my perfumes are starting to run out so I'm looking for something new. What would you all recommend (that isn't too expensive)? I saw someone mention a sample box up thread. Where do you buy those?
