Lovely, friendly perfume lovers thread

MissBattleaxe · 13/07/2016 22:26

This thread continues from our perfumistas thread which is now full. It is a lovely and friendly thread in which we discuss all things perfume-y, and ask for tips and share opinions and SOTDs ( Scent of The Day). Do drop in- we're not cliquey and we all smell nice.

Hello ThenLater! I did think it was odd I hadn't seen you here before now.
And hello to PBP who sadly can't be with us, but lurks, recognised me, and sent me some tips on FB. Wink

ScentFest: I am not wafting in anything! At least not kaftan-wise. I shall wear a LBD and heels. There will be duckboards, non?

Nothing new to add SOTD wise as I'm still choosing between my Tauers, Arpéges, and Coco. Hoping to get to a perfume shop next week though.....
ThenLater we have a big crossover in our saved eBay searches. I hope we don't bid against each other!

BaronessBomburst · 27/09/2016 10:35

Teenager scents.

I started off with Avon Peaches at infants school. It was a cream, in a tub designed to look like a barrel of peaches.
Junior school was Avon Zany. I can tell you nothing about it; it was a gift.
By the time I was 14 I was buying my own perfumes. Boots used to do fabulous gift boxes of samples from all the big names, with mini versions of the real bottles.
I settled on Guerlain Mitsouko, and Givenchy Ysatis, but also had Yves Rocher Isbahan as my cheapy. and Impulse Hint of Musk

Then DF bought me Arpége when I was 16 and that was that.

DS is 6 and likes to wear Tauer Lonesome Rider, and unsurprisingly, my vintage Arpége. He also nicks my Maja shower gel. I'm hoping to get him a bottle of one of the new Axe scents next week.

BaronessBomburst · 27/09/2016 10:36

*Axe is Lynx in mainland Europe.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 27/09/2016 11:12

Pretty Peach! I had the soap on a rope, which my Mum wouldn't let me use because she was convinced I'd strangle in the bath.( Hmm- off topic but isn't it odd how when we were young, parental fears all hinged on us doing dreadful damage to ourselves by strangling on a soap on a roap, or falling into quicksand (which was seemingly everywhere if the telly was to be believed) or falling through ice into a lake etc and now dangers are invariably the Bogeyman taking pictures of us in the park....)

I am hankering (as ever) on ancient boxes of Boots own brand soaps and talcs from the 70s which keep cropping up on ebay. I am sooooo vintage lol. How do perfumistas do soaps and lotions and potions? Do they? Or does it clash horribly with the magic elixir? (I use the whole lot, rarely the potions that go with the perfumes though- too expensive and too much overkill at times I think) I did have a Dune soap once, and various Obsession gift sets (soap, body cream, shampoo, the lot!) oh, and a fab Rive gauche candle. That was divine.

LillianGish · 27/09/2016 11:29

Teenage scents - started with Aqua Manda bath products (pre-teen) and Avon Pretty Peach (had totally forgotten until I saw this thread!) then Avon Tasha. Also Laughter (can't remember who it was by) and Max Factor Just Call me Maxi for school discos. Later progressed to Ma Griffe and my first proper grown up perfume which I bought at the airport on the way back from a school trip to Rome was Yves St Laurent Rive Gauche (which I still wear sometimes because it makes me feel young!) I also remember wearing Boots No 7 scent called Lemon Drench - I love citrusy perfumes to this day!

BaronessBomburst · 27/09/2016 15:02

I use supermarket shower gel and shampoo, and the same for my moisturiser which doubles as face cream. That leaves me smelling of pretty much nothing, so on goes the perfume.
I occasionally splash out on Nivea, or a shower gel/ moisturiser that matches a perfume.
I only use deodorant with alcohol in so buy Rexona (Sure) and random stuff from Spain.
I am a beautician's nightmare! I got given an eye serum and had no idea what to do with it. put it in the drawer I rarely wear makeup or nail polish either.
I am a sucker for hand-cream though!

BaronessBomburst · 27/09/2016 15:07

Look! 😂😂

Lemon Drench! I recall splashing that on one autumn day when I worked on the 3rd floor of a college, window wide open, to find wasps swarming in to find the scent. Eek!
I use nice soaps, currently some French one's I got last Christmas. I go for unscented body cream and Mitchum deodorant.

shins · 27/09/2016 19:29

Drowned myself in Bois des Iles in a department store, think I might die of happiness! Grin

teta · 27/09/2016 19:38

Went shopping today and found out that Calyx is being discontinued Sad.This was the Fragrance of my youth ( well 20's -30's).So I just had to buy a big bottle there and then.

OCSockOrphanage · 27/09/2016 20:05

As one does, Teta, a person cannot go forward without a knowledge of the past, or one is doomed to repeat it. Personally, I have no wish to revisit sny of the Calvin Klein scents, but I did try to like them.

BaronessBomburst · 28/09/2016 08:10

One.

Cockblocktopus · 28/09/2016 08:23

I liked obsession. First unisex/men's scent that I loved on me.

Teenage scents for me were So de la Renta, Obsession then Chanel 19 which I wore for years.

Only really started wearing other scent when I was pg with first DD 6 years ago.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 28/09/2016 08:27

I've told this tale before, but I traipsed round the whole town I was living in (Spain) in 1986 brandishing the April edition of Cosmo that had a smelly strip of Obsession with one of those amazing adverts (the blue one with either the threesome, or the 3 legged man Grin) but to no avail....thus my time in Spain was limited to Anais Anais followed by Rive Gauche. My first Obsession was in 87/88. My student bedroom walls were covered with the adverts - I bet there are 40 something men the world over who think of me when they smell it well, about 3

SoTD Paris - one of the flankers. Can't remember which. 4 reigns I think. Bought massive (and possibly fake) bottle for £6. Paris has always been one of my September scents.

teta · 28/09/2016 10:07

First scents for me were Kiku scented Talcum Powder with a big feathery puff, followed by a drum of Rose with a swansdown puff.I remember my sister being really upset as she wanted a puff tok.Charlie in my early teens followed by the sophisticated Rive Gauche in our Christmas stockings.Opium was also popular amongst us.They could smell coming in our local youth club.Body Shop White Musk as a poor student with the discovery of the glorious Annick Goutal in my 20's.

teta · 28/09/2016 10:08

Too!

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 28/09/2016 14:12

AUTUMN10 is giving 10% off at Scent Samples until next week, if anyone needs any. Grin

OCSockOrphanage · 28/09/2016 14:29

I remember that Kiku powder and puff (Faberge??) vividly, and so wanted one at boarding school.

On toiletries, try to choose unscented/minimally scented and particularly like the Atoderm stuff so stock up when we go to France by car. And Nesti Dante Cypress soaps; have tried the others, but that makes the bathroom smell delicious.

No scent yet as I have been dog walking, housekeeping and assembling an extension for the desk to accommodate DS's newest acquisition since 6.30 am, and have yet to visit the shower. Soon DS will pass his test and drive himself to school! Yippee.... I think. Chatting in the car is actually a great pleasure.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 28/09/2016 14:37

I do like posh soap, (something else inherited from my Mum, who always had the bathroom full of L'Occitane soaps) and Tisserand hand cream is divine. I spotted Tisserand are launching a new bath range shortly so will look forward to trying that, especially as I HAVE A BATHTUB in the new house! Huzzzzzzah!

PinkissimoAndPearls · 28/09/2016 14:45

OC I love Nesti Dante soaps, and Aromas Artisanales De Antigua soap too - too £££ for everyday for us but I buy the orange blossom one at Christmas.

Re: childhood perfumes, I remember my Mother had a box of bath salts which came with a tiny scoop, occasionally she would let me have a bath with them as a huge treat. I can't remember the name sadly as I would love to track down a box for her. They came in a pale blue plastic box IIRC.

SOTD of the day for me is paint Grin I am really meant to be resting as poorly so will stop now and might put my PJs on with some original Anais Anais for comfort/nostalgia.

It's getting colder oop North so I am looking forward to changing to more Winter scents.

OCSockOrphanage · 28/09/2016 16:31

DH refuses to compromise on soaps, saying it's the only way he will use scent, so I have to buy it!!! The Nesti Dante soaps work out a little less £ than R&G which he used to demand or get given for presents.

SoTD is now Elixir des Merveilles. Drifts away in bliss, even through the cold that hit me yesterday.

Feel better Pinkissimo.

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 28/09/2016 16:48

ive had a crappy morning, i was laid flat out for two hours after i woke up, unable to move because my back had gone into spasm and was all locked up. im up but moving very gingerly and i am still in pjs as id ont want to risk my back locking again if i try to get dressed. have put on soem Ambre De Cabochard and smell delicious

MissBattleaxe · 28/09/2016 18:17

Poor you OneNightTime! Get better soon. At least you smell good!

I'm trying Liz Earle Botanical No 9 today. It really reminds me of something but I can't put my finger on it.

I love posh soaps too. I keep loads on my dressing table as it makes the bedroom smell nice. I can't walk into TK Maxx without coming out laden with beautiful new soaps.

SlinkyVagabond · 28/09/2016 20:08

don't get up, you stop there pet.
I was feeling nostalgic, so funnily enough sotd was Obsession. Dh bought me bottle last Christmas as a joke (it was my 80s scent) Like many it seems to have been reformulated. There was no way I could have worn it as a daytime scent back then.

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 28/09/2016 21:39

You must all smell lovely. Get better soon. I'm looking forward to trying Liz Earle so look forward to your review missbattleaxe!
