Lovely, friendly perfume lovers thread

This thread continues from our perfumistas thread which is now full. It is a lovely and friendly thread in which we discuss all things perfume-y, and ask for tips and share opinions and SOTDs ( Scent of The Day). Do drop in- we're not cliquey and we all smell nice.

I have two daughters. The younger one is particularly open to experimenting: she has tried Yatagan and Bottega Veneta. If she picks leather perfumes at six, she'll probably soon move on to Kouros and Secretions Magnifiques Wink

Today I've worn a light dab of Bottega Veneta. It's chypre weather, so Y, Dioressence, Femme and Mitsouko are coming up next.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 19/09/2016 17:49

I have an urge for Vent Vert. A French ebayer has a tiny vintage VV and a Fracas too which hopefully will be on their way to me shortly.
We moved house at the weekend and I only kept Miss Dior out, but am very excited about unpacking my boxes.

SlinkyVagabond · 19/09/2016 18:37

I love l'air du temps too. Dh bought me a bottle on honeymoon so it has lovely memories. My dd is 18 (gulp) and is resolutely sweet floral in taste, Chloe, Miss Dior and Daisy are her favourites. Chloe takes me back as it was one of my favourites in the 80s. What were your teen scents? Mine was Fidgi, I just need a sniff to take me back to Sydney nightclubs dancing to Saturday night fever.(I am that old)

OCSockOrphanage · 19/09/2016 20:30

Build her a shed Frugal, we know how much you love Secretions... and thank you for the reminder that it's time for Y. Have never quite got Mitsouko, probably because it's DM's smell.

Slinky, my teen hand was firmly wrapped around my Amazone, which I haven't seen for sale or smelled for aeons. Sadly, I think I might be even older than you (not a lot!) Do Hermes still make Amazone? I might fancy a trip down that memory lane (but it will have been reformulated and will doubtless disappoint).

OCSockOrphanage · 19/09/2016 20:33

ThenLater, missed the proper vintage Vent Vert but had an FB of the 90s iteration. A bit like you with MMM, I loved it and then, pouf, went off it and gave it away. A litttle Sad now.

FrustratedFrugal · 19/09/2016 20:34

Amazone is available again! (I think I remember when it was launched and have a vintage mini). Not sure whether the new one smells different.

FrustratedFrugal · 19/09/2016 20:40

Ok I don't remember the launch - it was launched in 1974 Wink - but definitely received a mini of it in the late 1980s or early 1990s. A red and green mini Hermes scarf with a scary Medusa head came with it. I loved it.

Here's Amazone on Yesterday's Perfume.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 20/09/2016 06:44

My teen perfumes were Anais Anais, followed by Givenchy III and Rive Gauche. Earlier I had a tiny parfum of something called Elle (same stable as Kiku and Babe) and coveted my friend's Eau Jeune. I adored (and still do) Avon Moonwind, but my first Avon memories are of the 'cream sachet' perfumes they did. My grans/mum had Elegance, Charisma and (I think) Fleur.
I am probably the only one of my generation not to have worn Body Shop oils/perfumes, as even then I found them too sweet. That said, for a few years in my early 20s Chloe (orange box, little teardrop bottle) was mine and that is very sweet.
I can list my full bottles chronologically from 1981 onwards because I wrote what I was wearing (scent wise, have never given 2 hoots about clothes! ) in my diary. (Also wrote down what was number 1 and this is why I can come out with such gems as 'ah yes, Fergal Sharkey- November 85 and I was wearing Anais Anais' lol, no idea why some people think that makes me weird...humph)
I just remembered I bought an old bottle of Fidji this summer. Will try and unpack that for today I think.

PinkissimoAndPearls · 20/09/2016 07:33

I used to wear Anais Anais (in Summer, Paloma Picasso in winter Grin) when I met DH - last month for our wedding anniversary he got me a bottle of the original Anais Anais and I feel so nostalgic, I've been wearing it to bed!

I was wondering last night (I am sad) if any of you like scent in your houses - I currently have a Shearer reed diffuser in Amber Noir which is gorgeous, tuberose and violets. Or do you all have non scenty houses as a neutral backdrop for your perfumesSmile?

needastrongone · 20/09/2016 15:29

SJP Lovely is a tenner using Groupon at the minute, so I've taken a punt, also 2 extra bottles as my first Christmas presents!

SOTD Tom Ford Velvet Orchid. Autumnal and intense.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 20/09/2016 15:56

I have bought the Fracas and Vent Vert teensy bottles from the French ebayer.
My FB "daily memory" thingy came up with a status I wrote on this day in 2012 about perfume lol.
I smell of sweat (gorgeous, still unpacking boxes and humping stuff around) Cadbury's chocolate (dd and I gorging on last of our duty free) and probably curry powder (lunch) I will shower later and put something lovely on.

I keep meaning to ask- does anyone else love love love Liz Earle number 1? I adore it, I often read rave reviews and comments about the others, but n1 seems to have quietly kept in the classy crisp green background!

MissBattleaxe · 20/09/2016 16:14

Teen perfumes! Great question.

My first was Cachet, which was bought for me. Then Jontue- again, bought for me. My first "best" perfume was EL Beautiful, which I still have a soft spot for, and the perfume I wore non stop from the age of 17 until the age of 21 is LouLou.

I still love it, but it doesn't translate as well in daytime. It's a going out late sort of scent.

Pinkissimo- I don't scent my house but I do burn candles in the kitchen to help with cooking smells. I'm hoping for another Miller Harris one for Christmas.

Teen perfumes... i remember having Chloe but not liking it. Orange teardrop shaped bottle - not the current one or the chloe narcisse which is forever associated with my friend. After that I had Fendi and loved it but cant call it to mind. My sister wore some god awful thing that smelled of bluebells which I hated.

My mother (died a long time ago) wore rive gauche. I remember the bottle but sadly I get no scent memory from it (or Tresor her other perfume ). Maybe they reformulated them. Shame it'd be lovely to smell her

PinkissimoAndPearls · 20/09/2016 17:54

Not strictly perfume, but as a teen I had body sprays from Marks and Spencer - there were two in a pack, one for day and one for night and IIRC had a picture of a very elegant woman on. I loved them.

I also remember wearing Yardley Lace but we will gloss over that Grin

SlinkyVagabond · 20/09/2016 18:00

The original Chloe. Is what dd wears. It was bargainacious from morrisons. It's 18 quid, they were clearing it out, so 16. I havea discount card as Ds works there and it was a 20% discount day, so cheap as!
I remember buying a coty perfume in the 70s, it was supposed to be a reformulation of a 1920s perfume, that was nice.

SlinkyVagabond · 20/09/2016 18:07

Complice! That was it. Look at this site Wow, some of these names. Wouldn't it be lovely to sniff them?

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 20/09/2016 19:01

I can't remember ever wearing perfume as a teen. My mum had a bottle of the cream L'Aimant that I sneaked sometimes, but that was all. I didn't even have deodorant as a teen or anything that smelled nice. I smelled so unfresh (made up word) all the time. Sad

Sometimes I wonder if that is why I love and adore and NEED perfume so much. I panic if I leave the house without it by accident. On some deep, deep level it comforts me and makes me feel safe and not living in the barren way I grew up.

It sounds silly, but I am going to make sure perfume, deodorants, lovely creams and potions are available everywhere upstairs for my children as they grow up.

OCSockOrphanage · 20/09/2016 19:06

The other scents I wore as a teen were Je Reviens, which was a lovely carnation, now sadly a shade of itself, and Chamade. (My glam auntie worked in the make up game for TV and used to take me shopping; we are not a family weaned on posh scent... although these days you might think that.) Have also worn patchouli oil and Aqua Manda, about which the less said the better.

lasttimeround · 20/09/2016 20:22

Lastgirl - not silly at all.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 20/09/2016 20:29

Definitely not silly LastGirl. In a way I feel the same as you- I love taking dd round smelling and spraying and I never ever go without perfume unless I'm having a migraine. And these threads, and the blogs, and Luca Turin are my comfort food reading.

OCSockOrphanage · 20/09/2016 20:32

Well, they are not fattening!

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 20/09/2016 20:46

Smile Thanks lasttime and Dark!!! Having few baths, no deodorant and no nice smelling things at all as a teen makes me determined that my children don't go through that...it is the most fantastic thing, to smell so great you actually can bring happiness and comfort to yourself.

And I totally agree about his thread - my comfort read too Dark!! Haha OC...just another great thing it has going for it!! Grin

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 20/09/2016 22:24

Wow ladies Scentstock 2017 is going to be awesome. I'm wearing that poncho frugal.
I haven't thought of l'air du temps for ages. Need to try again.
My teen fragrance was Exclamation! Classy no? Then a strange one by Gabriella Sabatini. Not sure they still make that classic.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 20/09/2016 22:29

Scentstock 2017??? Is this happening?? If so, I am there!!!! I think a tonne of men would come....going by the ferocious fumes of aftershave I am forced to consume daily on my walk to work, I feel positive men would love it too!!!

I want to awake my inner hippy and channel the Mamas and Papas at sunset!!!Smile
