Lovely, friendly perfume lovers thread

MissBattleaxe · 13/07/2016 22:26

This thread continues from our perfumistas thread which is now full. It is a lovely and friendly thread in which we discuss all things perfume-y, and ask for tips and share opinions and SOTDs ( Scent of The Day). Do drop in- we're not cliquey and we all smell nice.

Nicely done thenlater I hope she loves it and blesses you for many moons to come.
I've just tried the Charlotte Tilbury. It's OK I guess I think I just have old fashioned tastes. I seem to find a lot of newer scents quite insipid. I did get a sample pressed on me and might give it a few more goes as I do like sandalwood. But for sandalwood I can't imagine this replacing samsara for me. There's also a soapiness underneath which seems so popular now. Like all people want is to smell like they washed. I'm starting to wonder what it means that lots of new scents are just pleasant or clean but have little character. Has the idea of women changed or is it just that a few decades in only the better stuff survives? Makes me worry that I stink to others seeing as I must smell quite different to the norm.

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 17/09/2016 18:39

lasttime I bet you smell awesome. I know what you mean. I find so many newer scents don't live up to hype.
frustrated thanks for that. Will use to help with buying gifts.
Daniel says he's def up for it and will be wearing something immaculate by Tom ford. He's just not sure which yet.
Sotd: shay and blue blood orange from sample box. Summery so just right to enjoy last of summer sun. Not a very complex fragrance but can still smell 4 hours later which is not bad for a citrus cologne I reckon.

OCSockOrphanage · 17/09/2016 20:43

Brill, so looking forward to meeting DC/J.Bond. Just as long as He's nogt wearing Brut or Old Spice.

OCSockOrphanage · 17/09/2016 20:45

Could he wear Portofino, please....... I like that

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 17/09/2016 21:58

I'll just text Dan now. I bought him Portofino one Xmas so should be fine. Timothy dalton is a Brut man I reckon.
Sorry digressing. Wine o clock

FrustratedFrugal · 18/09/2016 08:40

Scentstock is shaping up nicely - great smelling JBs to suit everyone, feel free to bring other gorgeous men too Grin

More importantly, what will you be wearing?

Buttonmoonb4tea · 18/09/2016 10:17

Frustrated Thank you, i looked at that link, and my favourite scent family is oriental floral. Any suggestions for this type of scent?

SlinkyVagabond · 18/09/2016 10:45

Could he wear Portofino, please....... I like that can he JUST wear that. Grin
Has anyone's oh (or you) tried Comme de Garcon Wonderwood? I got a sample for dh and for lovers of sandalwood it's lovely. Sotd for me.
I had a quick squirt of Fire yesterday, loved it to start, then went really sweet and bland then mellowed and lasted as a warm background scent. Really wanted to love it, but won't bother.
I've got some credit and money off house of Fraser, I may get that elusive bottle of Untitled by Maison Martin Margiela. It's really unusual, very green, very aldehyde ic, never smelt anything like it. Spring Summer scent, but into the drawer it could go.

FrustratedFrugal · 18/09/2016 11:30

Buttonmoon floral oriental or floriental is a huge perfume family, so you'll have lots of choice! Some easy-to-find suggestions here.

If your looking for more natural scent ingredients take a look at The House of Matriarch they are pricey but beautiful. I have a 20% discount code if your interested.

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 18/09/2016 16:13

Dan is totally fine with that slinky
frustrated you are too good a perfumista. I've just added loads to a bag on your link. Argh! I never knew so much about the world of samples and a Guerlain scent package too. Wowee!
As for Scentstock outfit. I'm thinking very minimalist black outfit to let perfume do the talking. How about anyone else?
Wearing Lemon today. Lovely but need another squirt now.
slinky how fab. I've heard good things about MMM. May even add to my sample bag.....

BelladiNotte · 18/09/2016 16:20

I've only just found this thread and My People Smile so many apolos if I'm saying something you already know.
I've sourced scents from way ago from the www.escentials website. May be America, don't know, but they've found stuff for me, never fAiled.

FrustratedFrugal · 18/09/2016 18:13

Buttonmoon some more florientals here. Take your time sampling, you won't like every single one but will probably find some intriguing new ones.

FrustratedFrugal · 18/09/2016 18:14

Sorry about the black stripes, would that silk poncho work for Scentstock Wink

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 18/09/2016 18:25

I got the Untitled as one of my Nose samples. I loved it, then didn't. (Conversely Cuir de Cordoba made me bleaaargh at first, now it's in my all time Top 10) (for now...)

OCSockOrphanage · 18/09/2016 18:52

In luurve, with Vengeance Extreme... this could, maybe, be a full bottle passion. One squirt, early-ish, and gosh... it's still lovely at 6.45pm. Roses, and more roses. I didn't know I could like them so much.

The poncho will be great for Scentstock Frugal. Will you go commando with JB (and Slinky) , or accessorise? I shall almost certainly wear grey, the exact shade to match the cloud cover!

ThenLater, love Untitled too, but it hasn't palled on me, andI like CdG Serpentine very nearly as much and for all the same notes. It is also a bit less spendy.

Buttonmoonb4tea · 18/09/2016 20:10

Frugal thanks so much. Have had a look at both links. Can't wait for pay day now. I'm going to be in sample heaven Smile. This thread is really educating me on unpicking scents. I've always had a nose for quite heavy, sensual perfumes. I really don't like light commercial scents. So this thread is really enlightening

nickdrakeslovechild · 18/09/2016 21:28

Hi, I have just put a question in a new thread, but you lovely ladies might be able to help.

I have just smelt Kenzo Jungle L'Elephant on someone and for the life of me I cant think what it smells like. I was instantly taken back to the 80's so was thinking opium, obsession or georgio or one of the other popular at the time, but I just cant get it.

Any ideas please?

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 18/09/2016 21:50

Scentstock sounds so fantastic!!! I just adore the idea of all us gorgeously fragrant folk floating to the Monkees, Led Zeppelin and Bob Seger!

SOTD was L'air du Temps.....I think this HAS to be the most beautiful scent ever.

MissBattleaxe · 18/09/2016 21:56

LastGirl- totally agree about l'Air du temps. Every time I wear it I think "you, my lovely little bottle, are a work of genius".

In other news I tried LUSH Lust fragrance today and cannot get rid of it. it's horrible!

Lovely to see new people coming over to the thread. Welcome one and all!

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 18/09/2016 22:19

MissB as usual you are SO RIGHT!!! L'air du Temps is so beautiful it is addictive!! My daughter (only six but so drawn to my perfume drawer) chooses it so much I feel anxious that my little 30ml bottle is fast disappearing!!!

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 18/09/2016 22:33

I've just caught up with the thread...hello Smile and a big welcome to all new people who just smell lovely!!!!
SOTE is Marc Jacobs Honey.....I think I'm trying to hold onto the last of the summer....

OCSockOrphanage · 19/09/2016 10:05

LittleLastGirl must have inherited perfumista genes. I predict expensive teen years. It's when I am profoundly grateful to have a DS (who nevertheless costs quite enough in clothes AND commandeered the two best smells from a trio of Miller Harris minis).

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 19/09/2016 12:58

I also have a perfumista in training- whose tastes already veer towards Chanel....and who recoils at my vintage grand-dame chypres and aldehydes saying they are 'too old lady' (obviously she will realise that what she means is 'timeless, classy and elegant!) I had a sample of Paloma Picasso on the other day and she said that reminded her of 'the perfume you always used to wear on the way to the airport when I was little'. Not sure what that was though, possibly Angel, or its cheaper smellalike Byblos Cielo.
I bought my Mum some L'Air du Temps at Christmas- it is lovely, I had a bottle years ago. It manages to be pretty, and sweet, but without the cloying pink candy sugar sticky lipsticky yucky scents that proliferate these days.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 19/09/2016 13:40

Haha yes OC...I have two daughters and even the three year old one has taken a strong liking to my perfume!!! I'm watching all my lovely bottles diminish before my eyes.SadSad
