Lovely, friendly perfume lovers thread

MissBattleaxe · 13/07/2016 22:26

This thread continues from our perfumistas thread which is now full. It is a lovely and friendly thread in which we discuss all things perfume-y, and ask for tips and share opinions and SOTDs ( Scent of The Day). Do drop in- we're not cliquey and we all smell nice.

Meant to say thanks so much again teta for the heads up about l'Artisan at TK.

PersisFord · 16/09/2016 07:40

I agree, this is such a lovely thread!!! I am reading it at times of stress and wishing we were all sitting around together smelling nice and being nice to each other!!

The Juliet has a gun miss charming sounds delicious - I love fruity smells but I don't want to smell like a bag of sweets. Where did you get your sample amber? There are a couple of them on eBay but is that a reasonable ok thing to do?

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 16/09/2016 10:02

Well don't you all smell splendid! Ahoy there perfumistas....I have been MN and social meedja fora free for 3 mths but cannot resist you lot. Do kick me into touch if you see me elsewhere on MN though, I must not get involved with truculence and Other People's Problems anymore...unless they involve scent selection that is!
I was in the UK and you'll laugh to hear I dumped my case and ran to the Perfume shop and shriekef 'where is this Fire of which they speak'. You'll be less impressed to hear I then spent all day going 'blearghhhhh' and scrubbing myself with Dettol. Not for me...
My new loves are Eau du Sud (a crisper, sharper, fuller Cristalle and a more lasting Jade ) 31 Rue de Cambon (one of those take-your-breath-away love at first sniff moments) and, after sleeping in a gay vicar's bedroom (don't ask) Heritage. I also fell in love with a Serge Lutens, but am buggered if I can remember which.
Purchases have been minimal -a whopping FB of Miss Dior originale for me, and a Chance Eau Fraiche for dd. Have noted about 10 of Gerald's decants I need though.
Passing through Stansted last week I had my squirt of L'Heure Bleue which is my duty free tradition and a chat with the lovely lovely Burberry lady. Obv am 30yrs too old for Burberry scents but dd loves them and the Stansted lady is our favourite. The Miller Harris lady gave me some samples which were OK, but nothing spesh. I have decided that I might be starting to tire of 'niche' in a bit of an Emperor's New Clothes kind of way.

BaronessBomburst! Hello lovely! How nice to see you here!

ThenLater, welcome home! We have missed you (though I have name changed recently)... Envying your coup de foudre from 31 rue de Cambon; those moments are precious. Sorry to hear you didn't like Fire, and may we enquire why you were asleep in a gay vicar's bedroom?

Mad Madame is today's SoTD as I remembered Judy saying that the weather was starting to be right for it again. New one for me, but good so far, although not sure about the opening.

Must get on with life though.... Tesco beckons and the fridge is empty.

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 16/09/2016 20:03

Evening. Lovely to have so many people to talk fragrance.
I'm intrigued by l'artisan and may try that sample set OC.
persis I recommend Queen by Queen Latifah (I know!) a real fruity feast. It reminds me of a perfume of my youth and can't think which. It was recommended on here as a quality celebrity fragrance and I really like it. Fruity and maybe a bit of soft vanilla. Also £10 on allbeauty.com. Try it!
thenlater I love the thought of all that quality perfume. I find myself sitting at cheapy end but am making plans to try out guerlain as I keep hearing wonderful things. It's just wonderful to smell great isn't it?
I really liked mad Madame so may need to look for my sample.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 16/09/2016 20:11

Oh I'm with you, Persis!!! I wish we could all spend a day and night in some big tent, on the beach or in a big field, just wrapped in all the most beautiful fragrances in the world and just being so nice to everyone!!!! Grin

This thread is my comfort - I love it. SOTD was my Christmas present from my DH....vintage Very Valentino. Just wonderful.

lasttimeround · 16/09/2016 20:22

In bed early wearing Apres L'Ondee and feeling lovely. Deeply recommend guerlain another esp their classics. I don't feel like that about other big fragrance houses (although many are also very good) Guerlain somehow gets me in a way say Chanel fragrances don't. Jicky and mitsouko I don't get on with so well but lheure bleue, samsara as well as apres l'ondee are just wonderful. Wearable art.

AmberNectarine · 16/09/2016 20:42

persis mine was from EBay. Have got samples from there before with no issue.

Today I wore Burberry Body.

Diamondsandpears · 16/09/2016 21:01

Hello fragrant beauties. I wonder if anyone can tell me about perfumes with less chemicals and more natural ingredients? I am pregnant and worried about what my skin is absorbing. I like Rose and Lily of the Valley, bergamot. I have Coco Mademoiselle for evening and Loved Valentino Rose before they stopped making it. Any ideas?

OCSockOrphanage · 16/09/2016 21:02

We could meet for a scentfest.... Glasto for olfactories..... we'd have a shed load of potential host tent pop ups. Can Heston cater?

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 16/09/2016 21:16

I have ordered some Tweed, Panache, Chique, and Blue Grass from Allbeauty. Then remembered I wanted L'Aimant as well!
Hanging my nose over a few bottles of Givenchy III on ebay...I threw my last mini bottle out as it had 'turned'.
Apres l'Ondee is another one I'd like to try. I often find myself drawn more to the names than the descriptions, or even the actual scents!

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 16/09/2016 21:35

OC if that ever happens....count me in!!!!! A festival for fragrant folk....maybe we could get Kylie, Taylor Swift and Donny Osmond to gig! I always imagine they smell simply divine.

Dark Chique is incredible!!! Wearing it, I felt so sophisticated....it is a really lovely scent!!!

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 16/09/2016 22:02

Count me in. Scentstock 2017? But do we go fragrant, wafty kaftan vibe or smart, chic exclusivity?!? Always think Daniel Craig looks like he would smell amazing. Can he come too?

MissBattleaxe · 16/09/2016 22:19

DiamondsandPears- I'm no scientist but I am certain that wearing perfume does not affect pregnant women by being absorbed into skin. For one thing, perfume is 80% alcohol so most perfume wearers would be very drunk all the time if it was absorbed.

IFRA is the official fragrance regulatory body and they are absolutely robust in banning any ingredient that cause so much as the slightest mild sneeze or twitch. IFRA has banned so many ingredients, over zealously IMO, that you can be absolutely sure that any European perfume will only contain safe ingredients and is rigorously regulated by IFRA and EU regulations.

Chique is fabulous, as is Blue Grass. All classics that deserve more love! Panache smells like Rive Gauche but costs under ten quid. allbeauty.com is shockingly good at tempting money out my purse. I've always found them very reliable and everything is genuine.

Pipachi · 16/09/2016 23:41

Lovely thread. But now I absolutely crave to smell 'Explosive' by Etienne Aigner and 'Mystere' de Rochas again. Very 80ies. I'm sure I would still appreciate them.

Buttonmoonb4tea · 17/09/2016 00:12

Can I join pls? My current scents on rotation or as and when are Narcisso Rodriguez for her and Estée Lauder Modern Muse. Both have a clean, sophisticated scent I think. My favourite go to perfume is Flowers by Kenzo, it's divine on my skin but don't have a bottle at the moment. I got a sample of Kenzo's Jungle Elephant, which I like but like Flowers more. I tried a Cartier perfume, again nice but not right for me. Does anybody have any recommendations based on the scents that I like?

FrustratedFrugal · 17/09/2016 05:26

I cannot believe I've almost missed Scentstock - yy to tents and caftans and silver trays full of lovely bottles!

I've spent the past week travelling, wearing Chanel 1932. For me it's the perfect office scent, innocuous but not run of the mill.

Amber lots of Versace Yellow Jeans on eBay.de...

OCSockOrphanage · 17/09/2016 10:45

Scentstock 2017 would be a winner. Something like the Port Eliot Festival, (the future of which is doubtful after the founder's death this summer). It would fit rather well with their zeitgeist. Perfumistas may be a growing tribe, but there might not be enough of us, although if Pinkie brings Daniel Craig, some folk could be interested.

What scent does James Bond wear?

FrustratedFrugal · 17/09/2016 12:36

I think what James Bond wears depends totally on who is your favorite Bond actor. I'm among the really few people on this planet who really liked Pierce Brosnan. He'd wear HdP 1725 Casanova or Eau Sauvage.

Who do you prefer and what would he wear?

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 17/09/2016 12:43

I don't like any of them much tbh, PB probably the least worst. He'd wear Antaeus. Or Minotaur. (Actually, he wouldn't wear Minotaur at all but it's my favourite mansmell)

TequilaBlockingBird · 17/09/2016 14:32

I've just bought Timbuktu from TK Maxx and it's really lovely, woody & dry. (not a fan of sweet scents) I tried Cartier Basier Vole during the week, but i'm not sure.....

OCSockOrphanage · 17/09/2016 15:56

Daniel Craig is, IMHO, the best of the Bonds, and I think I detect a whiff of an English version of Noir Epices, if there is such a thing. Javier Bardem gets my vote for best baddie, and would wear Imperial from Boadicea the Victorius, Ralph Fiennes (the new M for those who don't live in a houseful of Bond fanatics) chooses Petitgrain from Miller Harris.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 17/09/2016 16:05

I've just made my friend buy some L'Heure Bleue. She likes 'powdery' so I think she will love it!

FrustratedFrugal · 17/09/2016 16:53

Buttonmoon use the Michael Edwards fragrance matcher: it gives a couple of similar options and the main fragrance family. Then you can go to a perfume shop and ask to sample perfumes from the same family, white florals for example.

I'm actually wearing Antaeus today Wink
