Lovely, friendly perfume lovers thread

MissBattleaxe · 13/07/2016 22:26

This thread continues from our perfumistas thread which is now full. It is a lovely and friendly thread in which we discuss all things perfume-y, and ask for tips and share opinions and SOTDs ( Scent of The Day). Do drop in- we're not cliquey and we all smell nice.

Fingers crossed that you like it!

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 14/09/2016 21:31

SOTD was another Taylor of London/Milton Lloyd one, White Satin. I THINK this may have been Yardley many moons ago.

Well, I tried it with trepidation, but I have to say, I adored it. It is soft and gentle, like a cashmere throw around your shoulders. It was divine...reminding me a little of L'air du temps.

I loved this retro scent so much I am wearing it again tomorrow.

lasttimeround · 15/09/2016 08:51

I wasn't too into the l'artisan perfumer timbuktu initially. My first blind purchase (tk maxx) - thanks again teta But as time goes on I'm wearing it more and more. I'm layering it with herba fresca which adds a lighter fresher sparkle over the top while the vetiver and dry wood notes in the timbuktu anchore the herba fresca making it work as the weather gets cooler. Lovely. I've never really layered scents before. (I then tried layering timbuktu with samsara and that was just a muddle requiring scrubbing.)

I had the weirdest dream last night about a yellow leaf shaped perfume bottle. I've been thinking about buying small samples of things I wore in my 20s and 30 to see if I remember them and what I think about them now but i had totally forgotten this. Anyway some googling revealed kenzo summer and I know I had this and loved it. Not sure when. Sadly it's discontinued. But explains my longing for mimosa which I thought was about the plant but probably is related to this perfume which must have come some time after my body shop vanilla phase. Blush
I'm so intrigued with all the perfume knowledge on here. I'd never heard of Milton Lloyd. I need a notebook to keep track of thinks. I'm still tracking down the lynx - but was stood in boots trying to recall the right ones for a sniff test and really worrying about blasting the wrong one on my skin!

lasttimeround · 15/09/2016 08:52

Oh god thats a really long post. Sorry for all my wafgling

Shorteralls · 15/09/2016 09:09

I love reading this thread, it is inspiring and soothing and I've learnt quite a lot from looking up perfumes mentioned that I'd never heard of before. It is becoming a bit of a fun obsession. Hope you don't mind if I launch in too.

I have a small sample of Timbuktu and love it, I find it very atmospheric and would like an FB (I am learning the terminology!) but am skint, sadly.

Today I'm wearing another sample, Prada Infusion Oeillet, which I also love. It is very soft and comforting. Difficult to describe but it is gentle and not too sweet. Carnations are apparently becoming fashionable again after a hiatus.

lasttimeround · 15/09/2016 09:29

shorter timbuktu is currently available via tk maxx at 29 quid for 100 ml edt. I have bought one and would be happy to send you a sample from my bottle. Someone up thread is also looking to sell her bottle. I don't have sample making kit or experience but I think I'm definitely going to try that. It will be v inexpert but I'm up for trying if you're interested.

MsRinky · 15/09/2016 09:43

SOTD: Ninfeo Mio.

I have some Tauer samples to try over the weekend - Lonesome Rider, Lonestar Memories, Le Maroc Pour Elle and L'Air du Desert Marocain. Very excited!

I love carnation scents - I have L'Artisan Oeillet Sauvage which I often layer with other stuff. Lowering the tone, I'd be very happy if they brought back carnation Zoflora...

Shorteralls · 15/09/2016 09:47

Lasttime gosh, that is very kind. I have no experience of making samples either. Only do it if you are sure - I don't want you to muck up your bottle. Have horrible visions of everything spilling Grin

If you do, let me know and I will of course pay you some money, let me know what you would think appropriate. I don't think I have much I could sway - I have a small unopened sample of Prada infusion orange blossom and a vetiver one, and a sample of Prada candy kiss, all from the perfume society. (I bought an extra box because I wanted the oiellet and almond ones but am not that fussed about the others, although they are nice). So you'd be welcome to those or a payment. Let me know if, when you know. If you decide not to risk it I completely understand!

Shorteralls · 15/09/2016 09:48

swap, not sway.

briony77 · 15/09/2016 09:56

Apologies if this has already been asked but it's a very long thread! Where do you buy your samples or decants from? I really want to try Tom Ford Santal Blush for a few wears before I commit to spending silly money on a full bottle but I'm not sure if the decants I've found available on eBay will be genuine or not?

Shorteralls · 15/09/2016 10:03

briony a site I saw recommended on here for samples is Beautyspin. I've used them and they are good. I've just looked and they do have some Tom Fords but not Santal Blush as far as I could see. There is also a site called Perfumista that has Tom Ford samples but, again, not that one.

Shorteralls · 15/09/2016 10:06

I haven't bought from ebay so can't help there but I think some people on here do successfully so may be able to help you.

MsRinky · 15/09/2016 10:26

Les Senteurs online do a sample service of up to four at a time, although it isn't as cheap as some other places.

For my 40th, my Mum got me a Les Senteurs voucher, and I went up to London and had the most lovely few hours there - you tell them what you like, be it scents or other perfumes and they guide you to suitable fragrances from their massive range of niche houses. They were so friendly and lovely, wouldn't let me spend my money until they were sure I'd got the right one, and it had had a chance to settle on my skin - I went away for lunch before coming back. I got Charogne by Etat Libre d'Orange in the end.

Judydreamsofhorses · 15/09/2016 10:43

SOTD is Miller Harris L'Air de Rien - it is properly autumnal here so it seemed fitting. No matter how many perfumes I have on the go, this and Chanel 19 are my absolute favourites and the ones I re-purchase again and again.

lasttimeround · 15/09/2016 10:46

shorter I'd be happy just to try it. I have read up on line and I wouldnt need to open my own bottle - just spray into a sample bottle so theres no real risk. I need to buy some sample bottles etc so it would take a while. But I'd like to give it a go as I'd like to get into swapping samples but am worried I'd get it wrong in a more formal setting. Id appreciate a chsnce to practice honestly. Lets pm

OCSockOrphanage · 15/09/2016 11:30

I succumbed to a second round of the JHaG samples (now two versions are available, of which the eccentrics contained some harder to find samples). Sadly there wasn't a sample of Another Oud which I like a lot but I now have Anyway, Romantina, Citizen Queen, Vengeance Extreme, White Spirit and Mad Madame to try out! Having suggested Miss Charming to Amber, I thought I should give it another whirl, and could still smell it this morning. It is so pretty, just not me really. I like it, but it does not smell the way I think I want myself scented. Is that impossibly confused, or simply irrational?

MissBattleaxe · 15/09/2016 12:38

I wore my Red Roses today OC - so long lasting!

CuriousPorge1975 · 15/09/2016 21:05

I will wear anything that anyone buys me for Christmas

However..

A close friend wears Hugo Boss Deep Red and it's the most amazing smell.

OCSockOrphanage · 15/09/2016 21:21

I sampled Romantina today, partly thinking of Amber, and like it quite a lot. It's floral, more so than my usual choices, but the underlying chypre stops the boring bits nicely.

And then I ruined it by buying a Christmas gift, the six sample set from l'Artisan Parfumeur, which I will end up keeping. For £12.99, it's not the worst extravagance of my life so far!

Uricon · 15/09/2016 21:50

I got my TKMaxx l'Artisan L'Eau d'Ambre Extreme this week

Really impressed, better sillage and longevity on my perfume eating skin than i was expecting (given many reviews and l'Artisan general mode)

Compares very favourably to SL Ambre Sultan IMO, a little sweeter (? the vanilla)

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 15/09/2016 22:10

This thread is so lovely.....filled with gorgeous (and gorgeous smelling) people. Everyone is just so nice to each other. Smile

Anyway, back to business.I wore no scent at all today as I was ill and took the day off work. I slept all morning and afternoon....I dislike September for the very reason that the children carry so many colds and infections back from school this month. But tonight I sprayed on La Vie est Belle, and am just about to go to sleep (again) basking in it's warm and intoxicating beauty.
