Lovely, friendly perfume lovers thread

MissBattleaxe · 13/07/2016 22:26

This thread continues from our perfumistas thread which is now full. It is a lovely and friendly thread in which we discuss all things perfume-y, and ask for tips and share opinions and SOTDs ( Scent of The Day). Do drop in- we're not cliquey and we all smell nice.

I had a squirt of Tom Ford's Orchid Soleil today and it smells exactly like Nuxe's Parfum Prodigieux/Huile Prodigieuse. I didn't recognise it immediately, but when it had been on about half an hour, and was making me feel slightly sick, it dawned on me what it reminded me of.

BaronessBomburst · 12/09/2016 00:10

When I was in the UK last month I managed approximately 15 mins in a Boots. That was it. The sum total of my shopping time. Anyway, I
whipped out my Sniff List and they didn't stock a single thing on it!
I wasn't expecting Tom Ford, but Hermes Caleche? Lovely? Gurlain?
So I never know what any of you are talking about, and my list is getting longer........

Innermagic · 12/09/2016 00:55

Has any one tried the new Alexander McQueen-McQueen perfume yet?
I'm new on these threads and I was wondering what you do with perfume you no longer love or blind buys that haven't worked out.
I have two full bottles of l'artsian perfume that I won't use Timbuktu and passage de enfer. I don't know what to do with them really, I don't normally blind buy 100ml perfumes but these were from tk maxx and I loved the first to I got.
I don't have an eBay account.

MsRinky · 12/09/2016 12:28

SOTD: Papillon Angelique. It's weirdly buttery, almost like ghee.

MissBattleaxe · 12/09/2016 14:14

MsRinky- I have a full bottle of that. I love the orris and the suede-y feel to it.

pinkissimo love Fire too. Every female in my family got a MG fragrance for their birthday this year. Have a Cherry still to gift but not tried it so not sure who it would suit.
Never tried Arpege but really intrigued now you guys are rating it. Very tempted to go sniffing. Where can I try it?
SOTD is Plum as forgot I had it. Def no Fire or Lemon but can't place why I don't like it?!? I'm a total novice at the guess the constituents game. I think that's why I like the Perfume society as I'm learning with their taster notes!
innermagic never tried McQueen. What's it like? I don't have an answer, I've just been clearing more room in my drawers and then ignoring some. I'm sure that's not the correct response! I suppose the sickly sweet ones that I go off quickly I give to teens in my family.

teta · 12/09/2016 19:55

I think I'm the opposite of everyone else because I love Plum and don't get on with Fire at all.So if anyone wants to to swop?
Sotd is Tiare by Ormonde Jayne. It was cold this morning here and Tiare is definitely a summer scent. It was wrong. But then the weather turned warm and humid and it was just right.

MsRinky · 12/09/2016 20:42

I don't get on with Fire either, it isn't that I don't like it, but it lasts about 30 seconds on my skin, vanishes completely and then suddenly appears with a bang about 12 hours later. Really weird.

MrsSchadenfreude · 12/09/2016 21:01

I love the vintage Ivoire. The reformulation is a travesty, it has just become generic, sweet smelling perfume no. 134. I have half a bottle left and am making it last. The vintage one is dirty, sophisticated, a slight whiff of pants that have been worn too long on a hot day. It has depth, which the new one doesn't.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 12/09/2016 21:07

MissB my friend sent me Chique, Panache, Panache Mademoiselle and Tweed!! I must wear Chique tomorrow and let you know what I think. I also got Colour Me Pearl, Colour Me Red, Vogue, Love You, New York Dolls , Superstar, The Look and about four others I can't remember. I wore The Look today and it is unmistakably CKOne.

It's quite exciting trying out the dupes just to see if they smell like the real thing.

SlinkyVagabond · 13/09/2016 06:15

Tweed! That was DM's posh perfume. I remember buying her a bottle of pafum rather than the usual edit and being shocked how tiny it was.
For dupes I always o back to perfume parlour. I'm hanging off an order as something is out of stock.
I missed a bit, who makes Fire and what's it like? My blind one was a vanillary scent from m and s. Think it wes called Madeleine far too sweet for me.
Right it's grey and muggy, what to wear?

MissBattleaxe · 13/09/2016 19:52

Slinky- was it Gabriella? That's discontinued now, but was quite vanilla.

I think Tweed is really underrated. It's a sort of woody oriental with a bit of lavender/fougere going on. Unfortunately, it can't seem to shake off it's "Nan" tag.

Fire is by Mary Greenwell and is available from The Fragrance Shop for 19.50. It's one of the best scents on the High Street and smells like it should be three times the price.

Equisrius today, orris root and chocolate. A favourite, from Parfums d'Empire. Waiting for a new set of samples, well too sets Blush from JHaG. Went for the Eccentrics box as well, to get Mad Madame.

OCSockOrphanage · 13/09/2016 20:16

That should have read Equistrius.........

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 13/09/2016 20:22

MissB loved loved LOVED Chique! I picked up on the rose straight away and then sandalwood. It is really quite sophisticated!!!! I can't believe it is a cheapy!!!

MissBattleaxe · 13/09/2016 22:25

LastGirl- Yay! another Chique fan! It's another one that's underrated but it has amazing longevity, is very much a chypre, and costs less than a bottle of wine. I'm not on the payroll, just a big fan of the cheap and cheerful.

Chique is a good example of how a scent with no fanfare and no big ad campaign and rather dull packaging can still be really good.

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 13/09/2016 22:42

god, my auntie gave me a bottle of Tweed when i was a young girl. she didn't want it and i had it for years until it got accidentally smashed in a house move

i too am a big fan of cheap and cheerful as there are a lot that are really good and smell much better and more expensive than the price tag would have you believe they would. although it's been discontinued, one of my current favourites is ambre de cabochard which i picked up for a mere £4.99 a bottle for 50mls. such is its pulling power, i sent some on to missbattleaxe as she loves it too Smile i'm also a big fan of the florentyna range in M&S especially the white floral one. cheap as anything but BIG and loud and just what i love from my white florals

AmberNectarine · 13/09/2016 23:51

Hello nice-smelling folk - wondering if you can help me with two questions?

  1. I like florals/orientals - my favourites are Coco M, Flowerbomb, Florabotanica and EL Sensuous Nude and Jimmy Choo Illicit. What else might I like?
  1. My favourite ever perfume was Versace Yellow Jeans, which was long discontinued. I cannot articulate how much I loved that scent and have been searching for a replacement ever since, without success. Does anyone know of anything that smells similar. Closest I've come is Yellow Diamond, but I'm sure I can do better!

Thanks in advance!

MrsCocoa · 14/09/2016 00:23

Hello All - anyone else tried the Charlotte Tilbury fragrance? Reminds me of one of the JhaG's - same tarnished metal note in there as one of their citrus-based fragrances. Went to CT's site to check the notes (no reviews around as yet) and was a bit surprised by the rather bizarre blurb. Put me off ...now wondering about the target demographic.

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 14/09/2016 07:53

OC so lucky I love my JHaG box and DC get into it too. Choosing each day and rating it! not chosen a FBas I just have so many to try and pretty expensive. I too am a cheap lover except for a few Chanel classics. However I'm very tempted by guerlain as some lovely testers. I just need a solo shopping trip to try!
I am definitely going to try Chique Missbattleaxe and Lastgirl sounds interesting.
amber sorry I'm not much use suggesting smell-a-like but like the Perfume society online help! My favourite floral is Jo Malone velvet Rose Oud which is great wintery floral. And lasts too.
I am interested in tilbury perfume but chat is pretty pretentious without describing much!
SOTD Lalique Amethyst eclat. Deliciously summery: fruity berry with a rose component and may be the only way I can wear rose.

Dozer · 14/09/2016 08:04

I'd be really grateful for any suggestions - used to love perfume but totally lost it in last 8 years due to nausea, DC and commuting (strong scents can be impolite when you're like sardines!)

I used to wear and love Escape or Dune daily, but after having DC I found them too strong.

Then Dolce and Gabanna Parfum II, which was a pink one, lighter and still floral, and Gucci Rush Summer, which I still like but are both discontinued.

I like floral, sea kinds of smells and lavendar!

OCSockOrphanage · 14/09/2016 09:36

Hi Amber, welcome to Scentland! You might like some of the Jo Malones. Not many of them have longevity, until/unless you layer them with the matching body lotion, but I tried Red Roses at Heathrow one day before a flight to the Middle East and could smell it the following morning, and it does deliver roses, plus a little spice. Florals and orientals are not really my comfort zone though, so you may wish to ignore this.

Pondering SoTD, given that we are predicted heat and humidity... thinking along the lines of Eau Parfume au The Vert, or Bleu (slightly lavender-y) but either will be light and fresh.

How does one add the correct accents here? I can't work it out.

AmberNectarine · 14/09/2016 12:33

Well OC, you're spot on because I currently have a big bottle of Red Roses on my dressing table! Also English Pear & Freesia, plus I recently acquired Mimosa & Cardamom, which is really different to anything I have previously had but I do like it a lot.

OCSockOrphanage · 14/09/2016 13:29

Lucky guess, Amber! In which case, if you wanted something you won't smell on everyone else, I might steer you in the direction of Juliette Has a Gun's Miss Charming, which has rose, raspberry and tangerine notes and is very pretty/fruity but not icky sweet fruit salad like many current releases.

AmberNectarine · 14/09/2016 14:37

Thanks - have ordered a sample and will report back!
